As I read through the Pages of Dear Sister, Once Abused, I found myself finally understanding the reasons why my life was in such a turmoil. I understand what I have to do to heal. Now I have hope.

Victoria Lynn, psychiatric nurse, draws upon her experience and talks openly about her healing process from childhood sexual abuse. This book is a powerful resource for adults who have suffered abuse and for their families and friends. Well written and hopeful, it is about a journey that connects with human suffering and opens hearts to understanding.

This book answered alot of questions for me in terms I could understand as a novice, it also helped me to recognize alot of my own symptoms.It's well worth the short time it takes to read if you can't comprehend what's happening to you or someone you care about.

This book, although older, is one of the easiest reading and easiest to understand on depression. Written by a doctor, but in very understandable language. Great book for anyone suffering from this!

I paged through this board book when my daughter was only weeks old. I had to buy another copy by the time she turned a year old. We had read it so many times, it had been chewed and spilt on, was just about dead. I ended up buying a new one and she still has it at age 3. I think this is an excellent book for mothers to read to their daughters and sons. The pictures are large and bright and the poem is adorable. Being a single mom, I try to find books dealing with it at her age, and I thought this was a perfect one due to it's simplicity. I reccommend this to any mother. I have even bought a few extra for fellow mother friends. It is just a wonderful book!

Jared wasn't particularly interested in a good looking woman, all he needed was a housekeeper...not that he would pass up a bed partner. Coming up out of a hangover, the sombre [yet handsome?] rancher got a bit of a shock when he saw Glenna and she revealed her bruises.

Glenna was willing to learn what it took to live on the Kansas prairie if only she could provide the promised home for her blind sister, Mary. But her foiled attempts with her widow's disguise to gain money to support her sister raised many doubts in Jareds' mind. What was she up to??

Little by little the generous gestures by Glenna began to make a small impression on Jared. Just don't ask about "Janie".
Glenna's conclusion was that Jared had loved Janie very much.
Glenna took immediately to Lyden...the twenty month old son of Jared.

I loved meeting Jared's brother, Joseph and his wife, Cally. And their eight children, 17 year old John, 16 year old Charity, then 15 year old twins, Matthew and Mark [they picked them up in Topeka on their way to the ranch] then there is 14 year old, Luke who is quiet and musical, like his mother.
[grin] Jared figured that his brother must have needed a rest because the next set of twins are 10 year old, Peter and Paul. [chuckle, chuckle] then six years later, little 4 year old Annie is born, "she is a sweetheart" according to Jared and she wants to marry Uncle Jared when she grows up. Oh, yes, and Cally is expecting again. Whee! what a great family.

Joseph is 36 and Jared is 33 [boy, does he have a way to go - sibling competition, you know] Of course Glenna is only 24.

Glenna, being from Chicago [Jared's nickname for her was "city-girl"]just about had histerics when a rattlesnake appeared up from the floorboards and was heading for the baby. One of the many reasons why Jared kept telling Glenna that it was too dangerous for a blind child to live on the ranch. But Glenna kept trying to think up adjustments to make the ranch livable for Mary.

Oh, yes - it did take a while for Glenna to let her handsome husband into her bed.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - thoroughly enjoyable - excellent read and keeps you interest.

I was pleasantly suprised when I picked up the re-issue of this book in the American Hero series(Kansas). I do not usually read to many historicals, but I quickly became involved in the story of Jared and Glenna. Jared who runs an add in the Chicago paper for a wife who is suitable for prairie life. He makes it quite clear that he is not capable of love and his "wife" would simply be nothing more than a hired hand who was also responsible for raising his son. Glenna, answers the ad in the hopes of getting her and her little sister out of an abusive situation. This story did not have any weak moments and because it is not as long as your typical historical novel, reading it in one sitting was easily done. This is a story I would go back to again and again.

And don't leave out the smallest detail." Again we spoke about seeing the little boy in the forest and about how he had disappeared... Draugr is a wonderful book for young teens of either sex---a quick, but engaging read, with compelling chapter openings and cliffhanging endings. Arthur Slade has woven just enough fright into the story to keep the reader sitting on the edge of their chair, yet anxiously turning the pages. With Slade's newest book, The Loki Wolf, soon to be released by Orca, readers won't have long to wait for their next "shivers."

As an elementary teacher I found this book to be a great motivator for my Grade Six students. I found the content to be very enticing for this age level without the "gore" that is present in other books of this genre. Slade does an excellent job of filling all chapters with suspense and encouraging the reader to forge on into the story. An excellent classroom resource to excite readers and a wonderful read.

On my first visit to London, I happened into the Victoria and Albert Museum and saw my first costume exhibition: CECIL BEATON'S ANTHOLOGY OF FASHION. It changed my life. This book will change yours. The photography is fantastic and the text is informative as well as entertaining. This book is almost as wonderful as seeing these dresses in person. . .almost!

No "well heeled" coffee table should be without this little number...also makes an elegant gift. Gorgeoous photos of the black dress spanning the 1900's, lovingly compiled.. Anyone who loves fashion will appreciate this book. A "MUST HAVE" for STYLE BUFFS!

I completely agree with Sharon Owens' review of this book. It was my favorite book as a pre-teen. My family never had enough money to send me to summer camp, but I was able to go through this book. I really identified with the main character, 12-year-old Chris. I remember reading it over and over and enjoying it more each time. It inspired me to write some short stories of my own. I very highly recommend this book!

I remember reading this book about the age of 12 or 13. It is about 5 girls who spend the entire summer at sleep-away camp. Their adventures and life lessons really struck a note with me and I remember reading this book over and over again. I would love to find a copy again for myself to add to my collection of childhood favorites. I would also love to see it re-published so that young girls could again learn from the lessons in this book.

Victoria Glendenning has indeed created a fascinating book filled with a myriad of characters, most of them women who are enthralled with one man (regardless of whom they are attached or married to), a fictional famous British author, Leo Ulm. In Ms.Glendinnings first attempt to write a novel after authoring the lives of famous British women, she provides the reader with some wonderful and fascinating glimpses into English life, their gardens, their homes, their gatherings and their interpersonal relationships.

I marvel that this woman, Victoria Glendinning, a mother of four sons, several successive marriages, degrees, jobs, and homes would find the time to create such magnificent literature. I hope that Amazon and Borders will help me to discover more about how this monumental task is accomplished.

There is a particular genre of British authors - british WOMEN writers who have such mastery over the nuance of man/woman behaviour that one could flatter oneself (if one were as fine a writer as they) that the book you are reading is a transcription of your own diary. In The Grown-ups" Victoria Glendinning, by virtue of her own incredibly discerning eye and ear writes about the kinds of random thoughts that you and I have,but never have the wit - or the will - to record. Speaking,for example, of elevator music she says ""a Chopin piano concerto from hidden speakers sprayed into the enclosed space like air-freshener" Flicks of knife-sharp characterizations, seemingly effortless, fill the book which is populated by a large cast of English semi-upper-class, each etched in acid and insight. I stumbled on this book in a dusty paper-back and am now asking Amazon to find me at least two more copies to give to friends....and am checking the notable biographies she has written of Rebecca West and Edith Sitwell. Ms Glendinning is extraordinarily funny, and deeply gifted.

The author succesfully tries to offer a thorough and detailed view of what is known and what isn't known about dog behavior and learning. His approach is above all scientific, which doesn't mean he avoids phenomena like ESP etc., nor does he simply give a description of the autorities' viewpoints. Lindsay also carefully analyses everything commonly accepted by laymen and experts, without resorting to emotional arguments. His systematic and straightforward 'nothing to hide' approach as well as his concern to include all practices and opinions certainly makes this book an authoritative study which counterbalances a lot of 'extreme' books on dog training (like Jean Donaldsons controversial book 'the culture clash' or the Koehler books).

For everything said in the book, scientific research and logical reasoning serves as basis, and sentimentality doesn't get a chance. Lindsay clearly stresses the reasons behind behavioral tactics and leaves the choice to the reader, providing all scientific facts necessary to support your decision. His view on the use of aversives is the most enlightening and waterproof explication I've read on why, how and when to use it -- or not...

Lindsay concentrates a lot on theoretical models to understand all kinds of phenomena. He never annoyed by giving too much information. Monuments of psychology like Skinner and Thorndike are equally critically analyzed as less famous men and at all time Lindsay remains consistent in his application of a thorough scientific approach to clearify and explain.

It isn't a cheap book, but it certainly lived up to my (high) expectations. The reference section at the end of each chapter provides a good means of exploring more studies and Lindsay doesn't hesitate to give suggestion for further reading. He acknowledges without hesitation the accomplishments of other people without idealizing them (he criticizes Skinners and Thorndikes view on punishment etc.).

I think it will take a long time before a more open and thorough book on dog behavior will appear. Therefore, if you want a book that gives a complete and detailed account of what is known on dog behavior and that provides a solid basis to expand your knowledge (even very rare phenomena are treated in detail), I would certainly recommend this book. The only negative thing about it I could think of, is the price -- and even then...

I am a "pet dog owner" who became fascinated by training and how dogs learn. Lindsay's book is a godsend. Having read a lot of the dog literature over the last 15 years, including struggling through some of the classics like Scott and Fuller, I was left with questions about what theories and practices were valid, and which had been superceded by further research that perhaps I hadn't discovered yet.

Lindsay puts the entire science of dog training and behavior into perspective, with astonishing completeness, brilliant organization, and elegant writing. He sorts through the history of our knowledge of dogs, discriminating between that which is good science and that which is not-so-good science. He compares and contrasts the theories and experiments of every person who has had anything to say that's relevant to what we know about dogs, including those from the fields of human and other species learning.

I especially appreciated the outlines at the beginning of every chapter, and the bibliographies at the end of every chapter (as well as at the end of the book). Some of the content is of special interest to me, and he makes it easy for me to go straight to the original sources.

His discussion of aversive training is outstanding, clarifying what has been a much misunderstood area in the last few years. And in spite of the scientific approach ("what do we really know"), Lindsay is able to discuss the softer issues of animal awareness and mysticism with touching grace.

The sheer quantity of literature that Lindsay has read and digested - and summarized for our benefit - is absolutely mindboggling. This book is a must-read for anyone who has a serious interest in dogs.

An excellent, readable, knowledgeable text book that will be referred to again and again. It contains so much information, and is indexed accurately so that you can find the relevant answers quickly. Diagrams are informative and useful.
To me this book is recommended for those already practicing H.T., or for those interested in gaining insight into Healing Touch with a view to entering the H.T. program. The Healing Touch program encourages people to participate in continued, life-long learning, and this book is a valuable resource.

No need for 1,000 more words. The above says it all. I loaned my copy to a client, forgot which one, and now must buy another. Can't practice without it.
