The presidency, an international affair ... riveting
In this book the main character is Matt Underwood -- President of the United States. He has an affair with Noy Sang -- ruler of a small asian country. Ultimately they fall in love. This is the intricate story of his wife finding out, the CIA entering the deadly game, and how their love affair ultimately threatens world peace. Excellent storytelling by a great author!

A overdue look at what went right with LBJ's presidency.
I've read this book twice and each time my admiration grows. Bernstein has written a book that accurately assesses what went right with Johnson's presidency. Johnson, on domestic policy, rivaled FDR in brilliance. Although Bernstein's goal is to show us the "forgotten" LBJ, he doesn't shrink from showing us how badly he failed when it came to the Vietnam War. This book contained lots of information but it never got bogged down in the details.

Understanding the Two- Dimensional Picture Plane
This work helps to clarify the importance of Hans Hofmann's works and why he is considered one of the most important art teachers of the 20th century. This work is especially important to any artist wanting to become the best they can become in their field. The ideas presented by Hofmann can take a lifetime to "master", but well worth the effort. His ideas are more than just "theory", they are a basic understanding of how to enliven a flat pictorial space and how to infuse oneself in one's work.

A powerful saga of courage and adapting to the unexpected
The Headmaster's Papers by Richard A. Hawley is the literate and engaging story of John Greeve, headmaster for a small, independent New England boys' school, whose personal and professional life begins to disintegrate around him. Faced with the crumbling of his meticulously ordered routine, Greeve must accept the challenge and fight for his school, his family, and even his own life. Originally published almost twenty years ago, Richard Hawley's The Headmaster's Papers continues to be very highly recommended as a powerful saga of courage and adapting to the unexpected.

Historic top-level information!
This is a unique and very well written book on high-altitude. The history chapters are complete and privide the reader with an exellent oveview of many interesting discoveries. You will not find historical information of this quality elsewhere. The scientific base is strong, and the detailed descriptions of some important medical experiments are of great use. I used the book as background source while writing a dutch booklet on high altitude disease, and found it of great use. Thank you, John West!

A handsome volume from a classic magazine
Dominique Browning, editor of HOUSE & GARDEN magazine, has a triumph on her hands with "House & Garden Book of Style." HOUSE & GARDEN has long been the sophisticated cousin to the more accessible HOUSE BEAUTIFUL, and that chicness is in evidence here. The HOUSE & GARDEN cool austerity--sometimes sacrificing warmth for hard-edged style, but many times not--is amply displayed throughout.

The book covers a panoply of styles, from "Country Luxe" to "New International" to "Mid-Century Modern" and beyond. The shabby warmth of English-inspired rooms is covered, as is the prissier French look--but as HOUSE & GARDEN so often does, there is almost always a visual wrench thrown into the works to get your attention and make you rethink your assumptions about a particular genre. Perfectly making the point is the photograph on p. 25, which shows an 18th-century settee decorously covered in a taupe damask, above which hangs what appears to be a piece of Spirograph art made with screamingly bright primary oil paints. The effect is jarring--but it works.

The thinking which goes into the decoration of these rooms is explored just as deeply as the looks themselves. Although photographs take up most of the room--as they should, since this is a case when a picture telling a thousand words is not only desirable, but necessary for instructing the reader--the text is informative and enlightening. The end result is that these profoundly individual rooms make their own cases, and what beautiful cases they make.

More advanced pop-up card ideas-still easy to do
This is the second book on the same subject. This one teaches you more ideas for pop-up cards. Also shows you how you can make GIANT pop-ups that can be used for playing in and around-sort of a scene for kids to build around. Again written for children but a good book for beginners in making pop-ups.
