What a Documentation Book should look like!
This book contains more photographs of antique quilts than any other book pertaining to the various quilt documentation projects, with just the right amount of text. WELL DONE in every way!

One of the best!!
This is a beautiful book with wonderful pictures and text. It is "one of the best" new books on the market. The pictures show lovely old quilts--some are old patterns that a person will recognize and some a fascinating combination that will be new to most quilters. Definitely a book worth owning!

IF YOU LOVE MFK FISHER, READ ON...
It's hard to believe this book was written and published in the '50s, when watery pot roast and martinis were America's idea of fodder for dinner parties. I loved Pellegrini's story about searching for olive oil in a friend's medicine cabinet, so he could dress a chicken--no one used olive oil for cooking then! You can skip every fancy book out now on Tuscan cuisine, trattoria cooking, etc. once you have this book, because it has the best recipes for risotto, rabbit, chicken, polenta, greens, cardoons, and more importantly, it makes an argument for eating well but in moderation -- a more sensible way to keep weight down without spoiling one's enjoyment of food. GARDENERS should also read this book, or his book, THE FOOD LOVER'S GARDEN. He writes just as lovingly about working in his garden as he does about cooking the foods he grows in it. Forget expensive organic produce at your local grocery and follow his instructions for a home garden to eat from, especially if you live in a mild climate like Prof. Pellegrini did (Seattle, WA).

Philosophy, food, appetite for life,self-respect, all in one.
I first read this book 40 years ago in college, happily soaking up its gentle and appreciative attitude toward life, as well as an early dose of cultural relativism. I learned soup-making from Professor Pellegrini, and gratitude, and something about what's important in life. I've often repeated his stories--the one about how to serve polenta to the family when you only have one sardine to go with it, the one about the crowd of boys on market days choosing which horse to follow, the one about how as a young man he horrified a girlfriend and her parents by following his own ideas about food. The professor's recipes--e.g., for soup--are more than a list of steps; they show the reader how to _approach_ soup. Once you know how to approach it, you can invent freely within the framework provided. Although it's the soup I remember the most, he talks about preparing many kinds of food, growing fruits and vegetables, and living life in a life-preserving and life-affirming manner. In many ways, the Professor was way ahead of his time, and as I grow older and relearn from experience some of the things about life that I first learned from him, I enjoy yet again the daring of the 12-year-old who came to this country alone from Italy, ate ham and eggs across the country, became an English professor, and put so much wisdom into this small book. It's a joy to see the book being reprinted and made available to a whole new generation of readers and cooks.

An Awesome Book and Author
Raymond D'Angelo is Chair of the Social Science department at the school I attend, St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, NY. I took a class he taught during the spring of 2001 called "The Civil Rights Movement." He used this book as the text for the course. He knows alot about this subject and the book was very well written. I highly recommend this book for both students and people interested in the topic. By the way all the proceeds go to the Selma Voting Rights Museum and the National Civil Rights Museum.

A Breakthrough in Social Epistemology
In this rigorous work, professor Corlett naturalizes the epistemological approch by introducing the element of the social into his account of cognition. By employing an analytic narrative, Dr. Corlett proffers a brilliant exposition of social epistemology which combines both collective and individualized epistemics. Furthermore, professor Corlett adduces his "Social Epistemic Reliabilism" as a theory of social epistemology that enumerates a full account of social justification, social belief, social truth, social epistemic responsibility, and social epistemic luck. Additionally, Corlett conceives the role of cognizant justification as that which may take on a dual role; namely, reason-giving and non-reason-giving justification. After considering other contemporaneous authors and their attempts at constructing a social epistemology (i.e. Margaret Gilbert, Steve Fuller, Alvin Goldman, and Keith Lehrer), professor Corlett rejects these attempts-but only in such a way so as to incorporate their strenghts and improve upon their deficiencies. Lastly, this work is undoubtedly constructed so as to amalgamate its findings with those common to other interdisciplinary approaches such as: Social Psychology, Sociology, Jurisprudence, and of course, Moral Philosophy.

Angelic!
I read this prior to The Horseman on the Roof. Probably not a good idea even though the author indicates that Angelo is a prequel of sorts. The events found in this novel/study kept throwing me as I read Horseman eventhough I was well aware that it is a character study of the Angelo in Horseman. Perhaps if I had read Horseman first my preference would be reversed. In any event...

This novel/study is a love story! Compact, austere, wrenching! What I did not get from Horseman, I got from this book..lyrical, lovely Giono! For example: "We must take care not to grow passionately fond of anything that is not worth the trouble." Angelo continually muses over how his heart has been stolen by a lovely perfume-fragrance which comes to symbolize a life worth living. What lady wears such a fragrance? Will Angelo ever meet her? The answers to these questions lie in both Angelo and The Horseman on the Roof.

blast from the past
When I was a little boy in the early '60's my family moved around a lot. One day on my first visit to a new school the principal took me to my classroom to meet the teacher and the kids. The teacher was reading this book to the class. Since my name is Angelo it freaked me out, and I'll never forget that day. The book itself is a run of the mill children's story I guess.

The Character of Nations: How Politics Makes and Breaks Prosperity, Family, and Civility

This book should be read by every American citizen.
Angelo Codevilla's The Character of Nations is at once a well-written, closely argued and thoroughly documented look at how today's United States of America has made almost a 180-degree turn from the USA of de Tocqueville's time. Codevilla is at his best when he shows the contrasts between what government frowned upon a generation ago, and that is now promoted by various government programs and agencies: "The contemporary American elites ... now enjoin actions once prohibited and prohibit actions once enjoined." Things that were considered too shameful even to discuss a generation ago are now held out as worthy of tolerance and often are deemed superior to more traditional aspects of Western culture.

This volume should be read alongside Thomas Sowell's excellent book, The Vision of the Anointed. Both books show how the failed palliatives proffered by Big Government have actually tended to exacerbate the problems they were designed to solve. I was especially troubled by the account of the Los Angeles riots, where "the police absented themselves for about twenty-four hours and left store owners to defend lives and property as best they could with their own weapons." Codevilla reports that the police then handcuffed and took away hapless store owners (many of them immigrants and minorities) who they found trying to protect their property. Increasingly, law-abiding citizens are being blamed for the increase of violence we are experiencing, and judges bend over backward to release convicted criminals back into the communities which had been their prey (but not, Codevilla notes, into the communities "where judges and court officials live").

The rise in convictions for "white collar crimes," along with seared consciences over the high rate of incarceration among Black males, has led to such anomalies as persons (and their employers) being tried and convicted of "sexual harassment" for doing little more than telling an off-color joke, while convicted rapis! ts are set free because the prisons are too crowded. Persons who try to ignore race in making decisions are called "racist" by others who want everything to be judged on the basis of a person's race, gender or class. Increasingly, ordinary citizens are intimidated by an atmosphere in which those who are "successful" in life are put down while those who are "oppressed" receive large doses of government support.

Although Codevilla's book is well-reasoned and documented, I doubt sincerely that it will change very many minds. The Republicans in Washington have been unable to stand up to thrashings administered by Senator Ted Kennedy when the Republicans do not support this or that expansion of the federal government's "village." Kennedy and other sycophants of the federal leviathan call their opponents "haters" and "enemies of women and children" when they oppose further extension of government powers.

In the meantime, Samuel Frances has noted that a government that is strong enough to defend every form of human depravity is also strong enough to punish those who work for a living and are motivated by a sincere belief in God and Country. If we were ever to have to fight a war like World War II, I doubt very much that we could survive. Who would be willing to risk life and limb to defend a country where their ways are vilified and "alternative lifestyles" are subsidized and promoted in our schools?

My guess is, not enough to field a sufficient fighting force. Codevilla quotes Mario Cuomo, who decried the gun-toting "hunters who drink beer, don't vote and lie to their wives about where they were all weekend." Remember, these are not criminals he is describing, but rather folks who work hard to make an honest living so they can support their families, while being required to shoulder an ever-increasing portion of the tax burden so that others who do not work can receive an after-tax income in excess of their own.

Codevilla h! as done a great service by showing how, historically, declines in civility and centralization of government power have destroyed once-great civilizations. Americans believe they are invincible. Some would argue that America is a "plum ripe for the picking."

I only hope that I am wrong in my belief that The Character of Nations will not change very many minds. Perhaps those who do read the book will be emboldened to speak up the next time someone impugns Western Democracy.
