Anthony is the "real kid" in all of us.
Angelo DeCesare validates feelings real kids have by allowing his main character, Anthony, to be angry, sad, lonesome and happy - whatever the appropriate emotion is at the time.

As a reading specialist, I have read this book with elementary school children. They find Anthony to be a very engaging character. They love when he turns into a monster and goes to school. They easily relate to being teased by other students because they are different.

The book is great for initiating converstions about feelings and appropriate and unacceptable reactions to how one is feeling.

Kids like this book
Anthony the Perfect Monster has been selected for Children's Choices for 1997, a poll of 10,000 school children in the U.S. conducted by the International Reading Association-Children's Book Council Joint Committee

Great for kids who try too hard to be perfect.
Anthony is a little boy who thinks that no one will like him unless he's "perfect." He tries to live up to this impossible standard by being helpful and obedient all the time, but this doesn't work for long. When Anthony gets angry on the first day of school, he deals with it by imagining himself a monster, since monsters don't have to be perfect. With the help of an insightful and caring teacher, Anthony finds out that he can accept himself, with all his imperfections, and be loved for himself. Simple, eye-catching art will appeal to young children

Credit: The Complete Guide to Pricing, Hedging and Risk Management
Published in Hardcover by Risk Books (01 April, 2001)
Authors: Angelo Arvanitis and Jon Gregory
Amazon base price: $155.00

A practioners view of credit derivaties
As a trader working in the Synthetic Arbitrage area I find this book an in valuable resource. The book covers credit concepts and institutional details like how to calculate economic capital etc. to intersting ways of constructing the credit curve to how one price different instruments on it and the different no arb relationships of different instruments. I found the chapers on hedging baskets and derivative credit risk to be very interesting and well written. The chapter on converts was a bit light. But on the whole this book is a must have for a Trader in this area of bleeding edge finance.

Much needed book on credit
Arvanitis and Gregory have written an excellent overview of modelling credit risk. The book is written in an intuitive and semi-technical style and the ideas are highlighted with numerous examples. It is therefore applicable to both managers wanting an overview of credit modelling techniques and quants who want more technical details on pricing models. Opening chapters cover credit risk models and describe the standard approaches, such as CreditMetrics. The computation of the loss distribution is discussed and the authors illustrate the importance of modelling the potential credit exposure of derivatives. Default correlation, credit migration and recovery rate modelling are also discussed. Monte Carlo simulation with variance reduction and quasi-Monte Carlo techniques is relied upon heavily. Later chapters include an excellent treatment of credit derivative pricing, a theoretical discussion of how to price derivative counterparty risk and a discussion of credit risk in convertible bonds. The final chapter discusses some related issues such as the discrete hedging problem and market imperfections.

The book is broad in its product coverage with the right amount of technical depth. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in credit risk or credit derivatives.

Very well written and comprehensive
This is an excellent book. It covers a lot of material in a very practical way. It covers topics from credit risk management to the pricing of credit derivatives in a practical style with not too much math.

Exchanging Our Country Marks: The Transformation of African Identities in the Colonial and Antebellum South

A must read
A superb book that is a "must read" for every African African American man, woman and child. This book is the stuff of seminars, workshops and discussion groups at all levels. One of the fascinating positions exposed by Gomez was why it took the diverse ethnic Africans to achieve an African American consciousness. The depth of documentation was monumental. I always wondered why the color "red" had such significance in the African American "red clawt" tales. Gomez' book inspired me to research this aspect of African American tales. Thank you Mr. Gomez!

This work is a must read!
Gomez has done a tremendous service to the study of Africana by giving tangible evidence to what have heretofore been the answers rather than the questions on the who, what, where, when and WHY's of the African slave in America. Readers will be surprised at the degree to which something other than fact has helped form the base of their "knowledge". Suddenly the image of tobacco or rice will gain greater resonance than cotton. Virginia and Senegambia, for example, will have new and sharper meanings as we better ferret out who we were as Ghanaians, Senegambians, Angolans, etc. and how we became who we are as African-Americans.

An innovative and essential book in African Diaspora studies
Prof. Gomez has used a wealth of sources, many of which have been underutilized or neglected, to write a rich and nuanced meditation on the evolution of identity among Africans and their progeny in North America. His use of folklore points the way for new research in a field that oddly fails much too often to consider the voices of people of African descent. Every student at every level with interests in African-American studies or African Diaspora Studies must know this work.

Outstanding Book of Inspirational Stories
Fraternity and sorority membership is honestly a lifetime commitment, but for most of us it began in college. This book brings back loads of memories of all that is good about these organizations. The stories included in "Inspiration for Greeks" are a reminder as to why our organizations exists.

It is important that the current members and leaders of these organizations spend time addressing the challenges that are faced by fraternities and sororities. This book goes back to the basics and addresses the reasons why most of us joined. Leadership, scholarship, fellowship -- opportunities for inspiration throughout our years as undergraduates...continuing for a lifetime of membership.

This paperback is a collection of inspiring and insightful stories. Those actively involved in fraternities and sororities will recognize the names on the cover as well as the names associated with many of the stories. The stories are encouraging, motivational, humorous, touching and even serious.

This book should be on the shelf of every member of the fraternity and sorority community, young and old alike.

The other side.... Greek life
We often hear only the negative aspects of Greek Life and how awful an experience it can be, especially if you're gay, lesbian or bisexual. While there is still much homophobia in the college Greek system, I was glad to read the positive perspective expressed by a gay man who came out to his brothers.... indeed, the world, Greek Life is changing for the better and this book sheds light on stories that will continue to inspire and change the future...

A must read for parents of potential Greek members!
Every year, thousands of parents send their children off to college. Some near, some far... but most out of reach when it comes to the decisions they may make once on campus. One of the choices they will make is whether or not to join a fraternity or sorority. This book provides great insight to the kinds of experiences a son or daughter could have as a Greek. In an era where the negative press outweighs the positive, it is refreshing that some good stories go to print. Inspiration for Greeks has the potential to ease the fears of parents who may know little to nothing about the college experience. If you're a parent, read it for yourself and send it with them when they go. They'll thank you for it!

Finally Inspiring Stories on LGBT lives
The best thing about this book is it is set up to inspire. So many stories from the community are about overcoming hardship, but this one strives to show how wonderous the lives of LGBT people actually are. Rather than focusing only on the challenges and overcoming them that LGBT people face in society, this book shows that far from carrying a burden through life, being LGBT opens us to new ideas and creativity that a life "outside of the box" can bring and extolls the freedom that such a life brings. This book will uplift and inspire the spirit within all of us.

INSPIRE, ENRICH, SHARE & BELIEVE...
A refreshing look at today's lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and straight allies.... it gives hope, promise and inspiration to read each poem, each story, each contribution of being gay on college campuses today... An excellent resource for ally awareness, safe zone training, and lgbt sensitivity for all communities alike... we must share our stories, bring visibility and together we all can INSPIRE others to lead, to take action, to believe...!

Students' voices are finally heard
This book touches the hearts and opens the minds of everyone who reads it. It contains the voices and experiences of LGBT college students, former students, and those serving this population on college campuses. These stories are real. These lives are real. This book offers both reflection and validation of the experiences of an invisible population. Give it as a gift to someone. Better yet, buy it for yourself, and understand...

Tony is awesome!
During the spring of 1998 I was lucky enought to attend Tony's amazing seminars at my college. I was in need of some insperation and got more then I ever thought I would from a college leadership seminar. I was ready to take on the world when I left. Before I left the building I was looking at the College Blue book and had to have it. I engaged in a conversation with Tony and excited to read it. Since that night I have read that book over and over. The next school year I worked for residential life and found it to be a very tough but rewarding job. I will never forget those days! After I graduated from college and right after Insperations was published I was visiting his web site, reflecting on my accomplishments since the night I meat Tonday. I e-mailed the company to share my thoughts. My e-mail was forwarded to Tony and he wrote me back. I couldn't thank him enough. I ordered Insperaions and when I recived my copy he had signed it and wrote me a little note. I quickly read the book and have reread it a few times. Each time I am inspired by the stories and happy to reflect and remember my days as a res. lifer. If you are or have worked in residential life you must read this book!I will never forget the inpact Tony made on my life and the amazing books he has created. Thanks again Tony!

Phenomenal!
There is no other position in college like it. Being a resident assistant is by far the most rewarding, yet challenging position for college students worldwide. As soon as you walk into your building of residency, you are immediately "on call" (regardless if you are scheduled for duty). As a Friday or Saturday night approaches, you don't know what is in store for you. Will the sprinklers accidentally go off? Will a student pull the fire alarm? Will a party get too crazy and out of hand? Or will you find a resident crying hysterically in the hallway? You are called to be a friend, a counselor, an administrator, a teacher, a problem solver, and a mentor on a daily basis.

Being a resident assistant can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a college student's career. However, with these "rewards," comes along many long nights and challenging experiences. "Inspiration for Resident Assistants" offers the much needed encouragement that resident assistants are seeking so desperately to find. This paperback is a collection of inspiring and insightful stories; some are encouraging, motivating, humorous, touching and even serious.

Additionally, the book serves as a wonderful (and much needed) resource for resident assistants, student affair professionals, and residence life staffs. This is a valuable tool for trainings, conferences and meetings throughout the entire year.

I hope you find the lifelong lessons in each story. Thank you to Anthony, Dan, and Amy for having the fortitude to turn your "vision" of creating this book into a "reality." We are all grateful to your visionary leadership, because this book was the kick off to a phenomenal "Inspiration book series." Thank you!!!

Every RD should by this for his/her RAs
As a former RD, I wish I had access to this type of book for my RAs when I was in the halls. I would have bought one for each member of my staff. It's great for times when it just feels like no one appreciates the job an RA does. This would have been particularly good to have given out when I was at Ohio University right before Halloween! If you are an RD, check it out. I recommend it for all Res. Life staff. A great pick me up!

Power Marketing for Consultants Review
Power Marketing for Consultants:142Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants, by Marjorie Brody, Allen D'Angelo, Bill Kerley, and Bernard Zick unveil the power marketing secrets that justify why top consultants are making four times as such money as average consultants and have more time to enjoy their own lives. The authors of Power Marketing for Consultants: 142 Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants (Power Marketing for Consultants) are all highly successful consultants who enjoy what they do and are highly respected in the consulting arena. Brody, D'Angelo, et al. have taken thousands of working hours over the last twenty-five years and clearly stated their marketing and consulting philosophy in their book. The authors' research has shown that there is a large group of consultants on the lower end of the success curve and those who fall among the nation's most successful consultants. Successful consultants are storyteller, magicians, and highly successful in their area of expertise. The "magic" that successful consultants seem to perform is a result of well organized and highly tactical "power marketing." Power Marketing for Consultants is organized into three major marketing topic areas: Power Marketing Strategies, Power Marketing Tactics, and Power Marketing Maxims. Within the three topic areas each one of the authors highlighted their own marketing issues and practices. Just as the title implies there are 142 tips or suggestions in the book; they serve as their own chapters within the three major marketing themes. It is easy reading and is very direct, nothing is held back. When comparing Power Marketing for Consultants to Peter Block's book Flawless Consulting, Second Edition I believe Brody, D'Angelo, et al's work to be more organized and targeted towards a more professional audience. The target audience reached by Brody, D'Angelo, et. al. are young professionals or those who trying to gain further success and insight in their own consulting career. Robert B. Cialdini, author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, noted that, "Power Marketing for Consultants provides a rich source of valuable experience and insights for enhancing the consulting process." The authors of Power Marketing for Consultants have many of the same goals as Cialdini, they are result driven and have determined the only real challenge in life is getting people to comply with you. Getting compliance can be done several different ways, however, Brody, D'Angelo, et. al made several marketing suggestions to help consultants establish and maintain both valuable and beneficial relationships. In the "Power Marketing Strategies-Strengthening Your Foundation," portion of the book there are several helpful suggestions made. For example, writing down your goals, make a marketing log, keeping money in the bank, and obtaining better clients are just a few of the helpful suggestions given. "Power Marketing Tactics: Powering It Up," section made reference to joining professional and community organizations, hiring a public relations professional, getting into cyberspace, networking with non-competitive consultants, serving as a Master of Ceremonies, and writing articles for professional journals. Lastly, Brody, D'Angelo, et. al focuses on "Power Marketing Maxims: For Enduring Success" here they reinforce how important it is to be reliable and responsible, having a good sense humor, and understanding the Law of Cause and Effect. Brody, D'Angelo, Kerey, and Zick have taken their insider knowledge to what has made them successful and laid it out on the table; their work in this book clearly mirrors their success in each of their various areas of expertise. The information available in Power Marketing for Consultants: 142 Insider Marketing Secrets Used by the Nation's Top Consultants, by Marjorie Brody, Allen D'Angelo, Bill Kerley, and Bernard Zick is practical, sustainable, and time tested. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in being respected among the nation's top consultants.

RETURN TO THOSE THRILLING DAYS OF YESTERYEAR!
This is not just a book about toy cap pistols, it is a time machine. Not only does Mr. D'angelo present the cap pistols of our youth but he reveals the actors who played the part on television. A fact filled, exhaustive research of a love he shares with us. I had forgotten many of the toys he describes. Each page brought back memories of a childhood where honor and truth was the spoken word of the cowboy. So fans of the 50's and 60's westerns, return to those thrilling days of yesteryear when all boys wore their six shooters with pride and rode into the sunset.....

Definitive work on television westerns
A masterpiece of research and delivery. This is a book I keep out and enjoy referring to every time I watch a western on TV. The unexpected benefit from this book occurs when friends notice it on the table. I thought I knew everything about people I have known for years, but this book starts conversations into childhood favorites that are truly enlightening and very enjoyable. A must have for anyone who has every watched a TV western of owned a cap gun.

ONE OF THE MOST THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE BOOKS ON THE SUBJECT
MR. D'ANGELO HAS BROUGHT A WEALTH OF PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE AND WARMTH ON THE SUBJECT INTO HIS WRITING; HE HAS COMPLETELY AND EXHAUSTIVELY RESEARCHED THE BACKGROUNDS OF ALL OF THE CHARACTERS AND THE WEAPONS, AND DISCUSSES THEM WITH OPEN FAMILIARITY. FOR THOSE RAISED DURING THE 50'S AND 60'S, THIS IS A TRIP DOWN TV AND THE MOVIES'S MEMORY LANE. THIS BOOK IS OBVIOUSLY A LABOR OF LOVE, AND IT TRULY SHOWS. A GREAT ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTOR'S LIBRARY, AND GREAT FOR THE NOSTALGIA BUFFS!

War: Ends and Means
Published in Paperback by DIANE Publishing Co (April, 1989)
Authors: Paul Seabury and Angelo Codevilla
Amazon base price: $20.00
Average review score:

Primer
The authors refer to their book as a primer on war. It is the clearest, most useful book for those who nothing of war (or who only know things which are wrong)I have ever read. I recommended it, to no avail, to a committee of faith-based Social Justice and Peacemaking types. They, no doubt clinging to their useful errors, avoided the subject. The authors specifically refer to those who know little or nothing of war (most students these days)and they say the book is written for these folks.

One myth or old chestnut after another is analyzed and demolished. Their use of simple (and I emphasize "simple"--nothing complex) logic and historical examples known to almost all of us--nothing abstruse here--are brutal in the rapid and total destruction of some of the most commonly-accepted misunderstandings of war. For example, they discuss the Phoenix program of Viet Nam days. While acknowledging that it turned sour, they make plain what those involved knew. The Phoenix program worked, killing the cadres, the troublemakers, without killing scores or hundreds of unwilling conscripts and unlucky civilians. While being successful, it deprived the anti-war side of their masses of civilian casualties they needed to make their case. It was a two-fer. Thus, it had to be, as it was, demonized. They make frequent use of Aquinas and Augustine and the Just War Doctrine. It is not that we like war, Augustine said, but that our enemy's peace may be deadly to us. People may be murdered en masse, as we see in this century, without being in war, and fighting to avoid that is certainly moral. This book suffers from one disadvantage: Those who need it most may feel themselves superior to its message.

The best war primer known to modern man
Angelo Codevilla introduced me to the worlds of war in the late 1980's and later to intelligence in the ealry 1990's, leading partly to my career.

This book is what a modern Clauswhitz would write. Speaking in plain english on diverse subjects, he collects the type of thinking necessary to war in one book. I give this book (which is hard to find, but I managed) to every student of modern affairs.

It is hard to find the correct praise to lavish on this book without gushing. It is simply the best book of a primer on war that exists anywhere. More than introducing the student to war, it introduces him to thinking in war's pragmatic thought patterns- to the necessity that war demands.

Better, Codevilla uses his talent in context of historical necessity, drawing carefully from a bevy of beautifully chosen historical people and sitations.

You can do no better on the subject. Start thinking about war with War.

Uniquely insightful analysis of human and political aspects
I suspect that this book may suffered from the fact that it was published in '89, as so many things changed quickly after publication. The author's do a good job of discussing technical aspects of weapons and military operations, but this book's real strength is its discussion of reasons states go to war, how and why populations fight, political aspects of war, etc. I have read dozens of books on war, each good in its own way, but this book fills a badly needed niche in understanding the overall human and political dimesion to war. Having worked as a defense analyst for many years, I know that Americans suffer badly from the notion that war is a simple contest between competing technologies, and that too little thought has been given to the simple question, "why people fight?" This book is the best I have seen in addressing this question. The author's approach is not overly psychological or philosophical, much of it is "uncommon" common sense richly supported by a wealth of obscure but important historical information. This book must be read by people who want to understand what war is about. Period.
