I fell in love with Marilyn through this (back in '92). It was the first Marilyn book I had ever come across, and even now, I still believe it to be the best Marilyn (photo) bio I have read. I am not a deep fan, and I haven't seen every Marilyn book around (there are many), but I have seen enough to say that this is the best, extensive Marilyn biography that I've seen. This book chronicles her life from her childhood to her tragic death. I found it all so facinating to see her grow up through these pictures, from toddler to adult (the way the camera had captured the expressions on her face are astounding). There are no messy conspiracy theories here (I've read enough of those books to recommend everyone to avoid them!). It just writes what was (and is) commonly known, so we aren't left thinking confusing questions that could become dated in years to come. The numerous pictures which make up the bulk of this book will speak for itself. Sensitively written, the paragraphs are captivating to read. I must confess that I had not seen a Marilyn movie before reading this. When I did get to see a few, I thought that Marilyn was beautiful, but I enjoyed this book upon her life, more! I am sad that this is not in current print (just yet). Maybe check it out through your local library first, but if you are like me, you'd want to get your own copy afterwards. It is a book that has held me captivated for a long time. It was very sad - I almost cried when I went through it from beginning to end. It took me ages reading the paragraphs but took even more just studying each picture. It is a sad story. I had always thought that she was a 'bimbo' before, but after reading this, it changed my perception. Her movies aren't what I personally watch, but this Marilyn bio has a place in my heart. I hope every Marilyn fan has/will come across this very special book. The next best book I recommend on Marilyn is the Gloria Steinman one (with pics by George Barris).

A must have for cummings lovers and poetry addicts in general. The collection of poems put together in this book will leave you craving for more and yet will let your slip into the dark places in your mind to constantly analyse the poem you're reading while analysing yourself. A must have in your collection.

Excellent step-by-step guide for conducting a meta-analysis. It is definitely "practical" as indicated in the title. After understanding the theoretical framework of conducting a meta-analysis, this book is great for procedural guidance.

These are the speeches of an American revolutionary orator, agitator, and educator in the tradition of Eugene V. Debs. James P. Cannon, a long time leader of the Socialist Workers Party, was a prominent speaker for the revolutionary socialist movement for most of this century.
Here are more than thirty speeches, given over four decades and documenting sixty years of labor and radical history. They cover an extraordinary range of topics: the relationship of socialism and democracy, the struggle against war, the famous Minneapolis Labor Case, Trotskyism and Stalinism, the fortunes of the Russian revolution, and the road ahead for revolutionary youth. If you are new to the world of taoism then this book is NOT for you. It provides a fasinating insight into the Western and Eastern paradigms. Very revealing and exhausable; nearly every aspect is covered in comendable detail. But, and this is a big but, it is very complex and leaves you on more than one occassion feeling a little out of your depth. There are no exercises detailed to practise (that is not the point of the book) but lots of interesting parallels are drawn between the two schools of thought. If you are interested in the science of chi gong and/or what to write a paper for your University/college that will quite literally blow your teacher's mind then this is the book for you. I personally loved it, but I am not sure if it is to the general public's taste. However as you are reading this, then 'The Tao of bioenergetics' IS probarly for you - just don't be surprised if you end up reading each page at least twice! A brillant investment for the future!!

This Book of Starres: Learning to Read George Herbert
Published in Hardcover by University of Michigan Press (May, 1994)
Amazon base price: $42.50
Average review score:

White is an perceptive reader of poetry and theological reflections who has his own idiosyncratic but highly accesible style; all at the service of making George Herbert's poetry shine more brightly for others...not at all to stand in the spotlight himself. The "self-consuming artifacts" that Herbert constructs to effectively communicate religious truth and human uncertainty are well represented by White's own writing style, a steady candleflame that slowly and inobtrusively fades into the brighter dawn of Herbert's meditations rising into the reader's consciousness. I would recommend this book equally strongly for someone who has never heard of Herbert, or for a long-time lover of his poems and essays.

George Bird Grinnell is in one point different from other historians of the Old West. He personnally knew many of the cele-brities of that age, and what is written in his books are found-ed upon their stories. Major Frank North and his brother,Captain Luther North /Grinnell's close friend/ commanded this unique force of Indian auxiliaries. Unique, because they never lost a fight or even a single life during the long line of their battles and skirmishes. They patrolled the building of the railway and fought in major battles like the one of the Summit Springs. Also an important part of the book is the short history of the Pawnee Nation and it serves as well as a biography of the North brothers. And all this is in the highly readable style of George Bird Grinnell with full of westernisms.
