nice introduction to the criminal justice field
i just bought this book at my campus the other day. I can't put it down. This book is very interesting and laid out nicely, definitions are made clear. i feel as if i am there when i look at the pictures in this book and when i am reading about a particular incident.another thing i like about this book is it combines traditional learning with the author wanting the reader to use the internet.

Informative
A good book to read if you're studying the subject, even if it isn't required.

Gardening Indoors With Hid Lights
Published in Paperback by Van Patten Pub (01 December, 1997)
Authors: George F. Van Patten, Alyssa F. Bust, and Hart James
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

It's okay. Some great information, but cluttered.
Book contains about 154 pages and is divided into 6 sections. The sections discuss Light, Artificial Light, HID Lamps, Reflectors, Setup, and Electricity Basics. Appendices include Radiant Energy, Requirements of Plants, Troubleshooting, Types of Lamps, Glossary, and Index.

The book is a mixed bag of great information and cluttered lists of data. The major theme of the book wanders about. Some of the discussions contradict each other. For example, Van Patten does a masterful job describing why useful light for plants should not be measured in lumens. But then he goes ahead and displays his huge listing of light readings in lumens. Why? You made your point, use PAR Watts.

In another section, Van Patten decribes every possible detail about horticultural lamps and reflector systems, but draws no summary with a specific list of brands and models. Don't get me wrong, he lists lots of data. Pages and pages of spreadsheet like lumen data for over 115 models of bulbs. Pages and pages of 54 three dimensional charts. Yah, great, you did lots of research - but I don't need to see all the raw data. Just tell me which bulb I should buy. Maybe give me a top ten list. Should I really care what the lumens are for the 97th best bulb?

Many conclusions are very vague. For example Van Patten actually writes, "we still do not know which lamp is best". Gee, that a great reason to write a book.

I'm torn as how to rate this book. The book contains many jewels of information that are well researched and finely written. Some of Van Patten's findings are exciting, extremely interesting, and even thought provolking. But in between is a littered jumble of confusing tables and charts. It's disorganized. There are lots of typographical errors throughout. He should have hired a book editor before publishing this (or hired a smarter one).

If you plan to garden indoors with HID lights, you must buy this book (you have no other choice but this book, because there are no other texts available). The book is most valuable to purchase BEFORE you select a HID system. It will save you from making a costly mistake.

PS: I use two HID lamps, a 400 watt Agrosun and a 400 watt Sunmaster Warm Deluxe. Both are installed in identical Hydrofarm Super Grow Wing Systems. I love the results - I can grow anything!

Getting bright before starting grow lights
"Gardening Indoors with HID Lights" is a cross between a technical manuscript and an How To book for beginners. With a bachelors in cellular biology, this book was perfect for me. It explained how plants react to different parts of the light spectrum for different parts of their growth cycle. It steered me away from what would have been an ineffective fluorescent to maintain my citrus trees during the snowy winter. Instead the authors skillfully discuss the relationship of cost, watts, and effective indoor growth area for what is essentially artificial sunlight. As a novice, I decided not to take all their advice about an indoor lighting system, since I wasn't sure it would really work as advertised. But the practical science which is woven throughout this book would have been an equally effective guide for a much more elaborate set up. The salesperson where I ended up purchasing my HID system did not recommend this book since it was "too technical." I myself would recommend this book to anyone who studies their gardening and purchases other garden books. A high intensity discharged lighting system will cost several hundred dollars. My system had no information with it guide me in it's use. This book neatly fills the gap.

The characters of this book were well developted. You could tell what George and Martha were like. The book shows how important a friend really is. Even thouhg you may get into fights, it's best to forgive. The book shows this idea through a couple of different situations.

George and Martha score 5 stars again!
This sequel to the popular book, "George and Martha"tells even more shared adventures of this dynamic duo. The storiesare easy to read, easy to enjoy.

This additional set of short animated stories about two good friends shouldn't be missed.

Will George make it into the air by balloon?

Another 5 stars for these two good friends!

The Harmonious Circle: The Lives and Work of G.I. Gurdjieff, P.D. Ouspensky, and Their Followers
Published in Paperback by Shambhala Publications (October, 1987)
Author: James Webb
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

A lot of form, very little substance
Don't get the wrong idea. This book IS an entertaining read, but that is about it. There are many books in the "Gurdjieff field". Most are fairly shallow because they are "about" events and personalities of people involved in the "work". Other books are first hand accounts and though subjective too, reading of the difficulties that "veterans" encounter as well as the insights they experience can be useful to those seeking the same path. Only a handful of books are truly essential (as far as reading goes). This book belongs to the first category mentioned above. Full of many interesting stories and conjecture, this is not a book for those looking at gaining a deeper understanding of what is ultimately important. However, water does indeed seek it's own level and for those wanting a good fix of the superficial, this book is for you. I'd be careful about buying this book as a gift.

An excellent book to end/begin the journey.
Anyone who is at this site has the very exciting prospect of finding the actual TRUTH. A huge claim you may say but one that was made by Gurdjieff. Questions such as is there life after death can be answered. The question more importantly is can you accept the answers. Having read much in this line I was enthralled when I found such an excellent book in my favourite second hand bookshop. Whilst it didn't fall of the shelves it was THERE. Webb has touched the very essence of the work and he is to be congratulated on the presentation of the work. There are times when we know that we have finally got it right. Knowing is a solid element. I strongly recommend the book to searchers of the Truth.

Good starting point for postmodern ministry
This was the first book I read about postmodern ministry. As such, it was very useful. It is simple and pretty accurate in its descriptions. I would recommend it to someone with little knowledge about postmodernism and postmodern ministry. If you already have experience in the field and knowledge of the generation, then don't waste your time. You already know the stuff here. I would move on to Leonard Sweet's books. This book is good, just not too meaty. Accept what it is and use it accordingly.

good summary for those too lazy to talk to real people
Unlike most writers on the subject of "GenXers" and their (our) relationship to God and the church, Kevin Ford refrains from the condescending tone that characterizes so many books on the subject. He even suggests (gasp!) that some of the perspectives and strengths of this generation may have something to offer the church. Although the extensive narrative in each chapter was probably intended to illustrate one of Ford's points -- that personal narrative is the medium which will be most effective in communicating with Xer's -- I found the stories, particularly the dialogue, rather artificial at points. While it is important to remember that this is a generation that has had its share of neglect and abuse, resulting in subsequent dysfunctions of our own, we don't want ministry "to" us that doesn't also call us to ministry for others. We know the world is a messed-up place, and that we share in those faults. Give us hope. Give us a place and a purpose, and all the statistics will fade in contrast to remarkable narratives of our own

As a long time ee cummings fan, I found this book to be just as wonderful as the rest of his writing, although this one isn't as well known. If you can appreciate his artistic use of words, you will not be disapointed by etcetera.

Fantasy, Forgery, and the Byron Legend
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (January, 1996)
Author: James Soderholm
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

The lost art of literary criticism
I hope you'll allow me to glow a bit about my former instructor. Soderholm singlehandedly turned me from a gaping pre-law undergrad to a lover of literature, for which I'll be ever thankful. As to the merits of his first published work, I must add my sincere praise. Soderholm's sleek skull fascinates as it parades on the page. Especially entertaining--and, I would hastily add, quite in keeping with the dynamics of his lecture style--is the extended etymology in the first chapter: of the relationships between "glamour" and "grammar" and the spells that have been woven throughout our culture of them--right up to the present day. Soderholm is a first-rate mind, hardened in the crucible of UVa's graduate English program, and finely sharpened on the anvil of endless conversations with his students and colleagues. I am stronger for having known him, and studied under him, and I enjoyed very much this romp through the tawdry legend of Byron.
