2000, and still the same
What's most frightening about this book is that ever so often I had the impression that I was reading about the present-day situation on the Balkan. Yes, the old dynasties were swept away in the aftermath of WWI, so the names have changed, but the peoples on the Balkan peninsula are still the playthings of international capital and its henchmen in the parliaments. Unfortunately most modern reporters either hardly know how to formulate a correct phrase or have no clue about the social and economic background of the situation they write about. L.D. Trotsky, on the other hand, combined a keen eye for the complex intersection of economy, politics and religion with an expressive style. Not to forget his vitriolic humour. (And yes, I loved his snide remark about Austrian tardiness - verrry true!;-)) Despite the intricacy of the issues, these reports are easily readable.

An indispensable reference on the background of Balkan fight
Trotsky's war correspondence from the Balkan Wars that just preceded World War I is more than a fascinating collection of journalism by a dramatic and passionate figure in modern history. It is also an indispensable backgrounder for the fighting going on in the region today. Much of Trotsky's reportage, e.g. on Serbian attempts to reduce the Albanian population of Kosova by mass murder, will echo very loudly. To his credit, Trotsky sided whole-heartedly with the Albanian victims, in a way that shames the modern defenders of media neutrality and global passivity in the face of ethnic terrorism. The beginning of all wisdom on the modern Balkan wars.

Read this 30 years ago and am buying it again.
This is the 'bible' for symptoms of both good and bad health. I read this while working part-time in high school at a health food store, back when patrons were referred to as 'health-nuts'! I am longer in life now are returning to 'Oriental' medicine. This book will change your awareness of your health, if not your life.

The Best-seller that Introduced Macrobiotics in the '60s
The long, fascinating introduction to this Macrobiotic classic was written by the translator, from French: William Dufty, in 1965. The book was originally published under George Ohsawa's Japanese name, by University Press, and has been reprinted by two publishers. It is by far the most readable introduction to Macrobiotics, and is far more accessible than Ohsawa's ZEN MACROBIOTICS, which appeared in its standard revised edition the same year. Dedicated and addressed to 35 named international celebrities, only a very few of whom are still alive in 1999, this was a prophetic book that remains more vital than ever, as the biological degeneration of humanity has accelerated in the last three and a half decades!

Another great "pond" tale!
I went right out and bought this one after so thoroughly enjoying "Box Turtle at Long Pond", and it is just as wonderful. Stunningly detailed pictures combined with a very educational story make this a favorite of mine (and my son's!)

Black Soldier, White Army : The 24th Infantry Regiment in Korea

This Book Should Be A Must Read, for HISTORIANS.
A FORGOTTEN BLACK WARRIOR, THAT'LL NEVER FORGET..

I volunteered and was shipped to Korea as a rifleman,to the 24th Infantry Regiment's 2nd Battalion, G-Company, 1st Platoon, 1st Squad. where I was to serve from Dec.4 1950 until Sept. 1st, 1951. The regiment originally known as the Buffalo Soldiers, and can truely state that it was one of the most outstanding combat units in the Korean War.

In my book WHAT'S A COMMIE EVER DONE TO BLACK PEOPLE?, I wrote of my experiences, it details the psychological effect of the war, on a 17-year-old kid, It also tells the story of a black man's fight in a racist United States army. A war where we black soldiers soon realized the bitter irony of our situation--supposedly fighting to protect the rights and freedom of an ethnic people, many of us had never heard of before; even as that freedom was denied us in our own country. My experience was a rude awakening to the realities, not only of life and death, but of politics. Writing this book was one of the most difficult decision of my life. But perhaps it along with books like, BLACK SOLDIER WHITE ARMY, will serve as an inspiration to other Black-veterans, to tell their stories, A TRUE STORY of our history. Reflecting back now, at age 66, and realizing the advancements we Americans, of African decent have made, I feel very proud of my participation; and privilege to share my experiences with the younger generation.. And Yes. perhaps, if I had known then at the ages 17, what I know now, I too might've stayed home and remained in school (war is not like those in movies). But I didn't. I chose the road of adventure, The Creator spared me, perhaps to add this chapter, to the history of African-Americans in the making of this our great country..

Hopefully BLACK SOLDIER WHITE ARMY will impress upon the now generation, that the freedom and opportunities we now enjoy, African Americans also fought and died for it. Freedom, indeed, was not Free..

PS; Even now, 49 years afterward, tears come to my eyes, when I recall comrades, Whites, Blacks, Reds & Yellows, that gave their very all..

the wisdom of Box and songs too!
George Box is one of the statistical giants of the 20th Century. He started his career in chemical engineering in England where he learned the importance of experimental design and statistical methods. He came to the US in 1953 and spent time at North Carolina State College and later came back to be part of the statistics group at Princeton. After that he founded the Department fo Statistics at the University of Wisconsin. This history and other important career decisions icluding the founding of Technometrics are detailed in the brief section "My Professional Life" that he wrote for this volume.

Box's contributions to statistics are diverse and large. He developed many practical statistical designs including the central composite design. He is responsible for evolutionary operation and wrote a book on it with Norman Draper. He has also made major contributions to response surface methodology.

With Gwilym Jenkins he systematized the application of the ARIMA models and led the development of software for easy application of these model building techniques. He championed the concept of parsimonious models and insisted that model building should be an iterative and continually evolving technique. He contributed to the area of control through his stochastic time series models and found ways to incorporate it in manufacturing process control.

With David Cox he developed the Box-Cox family of transformations. These simple power transformation can be used to make the data have an approximate normal shape. he gave a prescription for how to estimate or pick the power to use based on the data.

These enormous contributions can be found in the volumes of collected works that Tiao and others have edited. His contributions can also be seen from his books on evolutionary operation, time series analysis, automated process control, empirical model building and response surfaces, and practical experimental designs ("Statistics for Experimenters").

However in the decades of the 80s and 90s from age 60 to 80, instead of retiring, George Box took on the challenge of developing a center for quality and productivity at the University of Wisconsin. This volme, edited by Tiao, Bisgaard, Hill, Pena and Stigler provides a collection of articles by Box. These are mostly articles written in the 1990s covering the subjects of A) continuous process improvement, B) designing experiments to gain quality information, C) sequential investigation and discovery (including response surface methods), D) quality control and E) learning how to identify and reduce variation or be less sensitive to it by constructing robust processes (i.e. processes not sensitive to minor changes in process parameters). The articles are mostly directed toward quality issues and are mostly articles that were published in the 1990s or 2000 with a few from the 80s. Some are important technical contributions but many are also very philosophical.

George Box is one of the great thinkers of the 20th century and his philosophy on statistics and scientific inference is as important as his many technical contributions. There are 46 articles in total 4 on topic A, 12 on B, 10 on C, 11 on D and 9 on E. Each topic area has a brief introduction identifying a unifying theme in the papers in that section.

Box has a terrific sense of humor that often comes out in his lectures and sometimes in his writings. One gets a good appreciation of it by reading the three songs on statistics that are included in Part F of the book. This is only a sample of several that he has written that are parodies of familiar tunes. Of these three my favorite is "There's no theorem like Bayes theorem" to the tune of "There's no business like show business."

There is a nice bibliography in the back of the book that is followed by a biography on Box and a list of his books and articles published between 1982 and 1999. This includes 3 books and 91 articles! Believe it or not he published even more in his earlier years.

Box Turtle at Long Pond
Box Turtle at Long Pond is a rarity among children's books - it contains accurate information! It is very refreshing to read a book to children that portrays wildlife in a natural setting rather than wearing clothes, driving cars, etc. Bravo to the authors for combining their artistic and creative talents to create such a treasure. If only other authors would follow in their example. (This book also contains beautiful illustrations!)

A very good book, but beware recent changes in the law.
I used this book to teach a law school course in the Czech Republic. It has an excellent selection of cases from which to teach the major areas of European Union (or European Community depending on your view) law. Get the most recent available supplement (1996 to my knowledge) and realize that there have been recent significant changes in this area of law.
