Book of Hours
When I joined the Church I was given a book titled "A Short Breviary" and it was the foundation of my prayer life. But after awhile the 8 hours ecame too inconvenient for me. Now I have discovered Dr. Storey's 2 volumes of "An Everyday Book of Hours" and "A Seasonal Bok of Hours" and they are a delight. Once again I am praying with the Church. My thanks to you and to Dr. Storey.

Enlightening
What a great book! It is intelligent, scholarly, obviously well-thought out, and interesting. I've always been a fan of Byron, and didn't realize how much his friendship with Shelley influenced his poetry. This book got me interested in Shelley's poetry, too, and he is now one of my favorites. I loved it.

Well-researched and informative
I have just read this book, and can recommend it unreservedly. Brookhart's career is one of high interest and Father McDaniel has done an excellent job telling of it. I have long heard of the fantastic campaign of 1932 for U.S. Senator in Iowa, and this book relates the facts as to it, and as to all the other campaigns that Brookhart was in. A most worthwhile contribution to senatorial biography. I am glad it has been published.

Excellent story about being scared and conquering that fear
This book dealt with a little girl who was afraid to go to a pool party because she didn't know how to swim. Instead of being honest with her friends, she thought of numerous reasons why she could't attend the party. When she finally reveals her secret, her friends are sympathetic and help her conquer her fear of swimming. Williams captures the typical child who is afraid to do something, but even more afraid of being made fun of by their friends. Williams shows the folly of this thinking by depicting friends who instead of belittling a friend's fear are supportive and kind. Good writing, easy reading, with an important message.
Staging Howells: Plays and Correspondence with Lawrence Barrett
Published in Paperback by Books on Demand (1994)

Interesting partnership told through their own words
This volume is very welcome to those who are interested in the 19th century American stage and especially those who are interested in the almost-forgotten actor Lawrence Barrett. Barrett was one of the first American actor-managers who oversaw all details of his productions and this book illustrates his creative control over the plays he performed. Two of Howells' plays were performed by Barrett to great acclaim and Barrett made sure that everything went according to plan. You could call his letters, dashed off in a spare moment, as harping and irritating, but he was a perfectionist which undoubtedly made Howells' plays all the stronger upon the stage. Barrett was never one to refrain from criticism! The letters are arranged chronologically so that the course of their relationship unfolds naturally. A final letter, separated by the last one by several years, is a touching note of sympathy for Barrett's widow. Despite their artistic differences, these two men truly respected each other. A wonderful book.
Therapy With Treatment Resistant Families: A Consultation-Crisis Intervention Model (Haworth Marriage & the Family)

Efficient helpful guide to crisis triage with families.
This is a well organized tightly written book. Concepts for the differential assessment of treatment-resistant familes and crisis-prone families are introduced and illustrated with deftness and brevity. The result is a guide to intervening in the family system with an economy of effort based an analysis of their past and potential responsiveness to resolving the crisis. By differentiating between the two general types of families and the combination of the two, the high risk family, the authors have been able to generate a flexible protocol to guide choices in interventions. Transcripts illustrating the concepts are detailed enough to without excessive length. Adequate consideration is given to the implications for other systems depending on the target system as well as ethical considerations in communications with other systems, consultation and referral. All around, a very helpful book, suitable reading for both the beginning clinican and the advanced clinician. Frank Heitmann, MSW
Thermopylai: Myth and Reality in 480 BC
Published in Paperback by Ares Pub (1996)
Amazon base price: $25.00

Understanding Thermopylai
The authors, a historian of the ancient world, a topographer and a geologist, finally solve the dilemma that for centuries perplexed scholars: the grand strategy and tactics connected with the battle at Thermopylai in 480 B.C., and the logistical and communication problems confronting defenders and invaders alike. They point out that after the Persians' success at Thermopylai, the Persian army did not use a coastal route, or any of the small passes over the Kallidromos mountains, but a road system directly to the south between the Oite and Kallidromos mountains, that they designate as the Great Isthmus Corridor Route, unknown to researchers until the authors' discovery.
The authors present geological and topographical evidence that negates all speculations of earlier researchers, who try to force the text of Herodotus, the earliest written source, into their historical account.
They use reports of early travelers, 19th and 20th century English and French authors, and, most importantly, the topographical articles in the bible of ancient historians, Pauly's RE.
The authors emphasize that their investigation was a salvage operation fighting for time against the encroaching topographical changes by a newly built cement factory, and the preparation for expanding the old, WWI British road into a major superhighway.
They identify ancient Trachis, and the passes that led from the Malian Gulf to the Gulf of Itea. They also gave a clear picture of the unique status of the Phokian ethnos in Central Greece, the Phokians' anti-Persian attitude, and their split allegiance during the period of Theban ascendancy.
Most importantly, they have shown that the strategy and tactics at Thermopylai were but a ruse to secure the main road system into Greece, as seen in the route the Persians took after the battle.
The footnotes are full and complete, a necessity in face of opposing views that are occasionally strident, and border on academic hybris.

Topics in Advanced Model Rocketry
Published in Hardcover by MIT Press (1973)

Average review score:
An excellent intuitive introduction to missile dynamics.
This book covers the planar dynamics of rigid bodies (that is rockets) in free-flight. It presents the true mathematical nature of the problem but grounds it in a solid intuitive introduction. I am a professional missile engineer and have used the information to initiate my "new" engineers out of school. It is an excellent book for a model rocketeer who is starting his college education in engineering. It covers the dynamics of rockets, it covers an introduction to subsonic aero, it covers trajectory integration, and stability.
Under An English Heaven, the Life of George Alcock

Among the finest books ever written about the finest of men,
George Alcock greeted me with a warm knowing smile at the International Workshop of Cometary Astronomy at Cambridge, England in 1999. I was there because I had discovered a comet. He was there because he had discovered 5 comets and had become a great legend among astronomers not only for his work in astronomy but because of his Michaelangelo like adeptness in the arts, education and other sciences. People obtain knowledge in many ways but mostly they learn by example from their teachers and from books. Here is a book about the finest English Gentleman and scholar who by the example of him that is portrayed in this book will inspire and show the way for the discoverers and educators of today and tomrrow.
