I have the original....
I have the original 1894 version of this book and have enjoyed it for many years. The perspective of battles is fresh in comparison to the history books of today. There is so much more in this book, the engravings and pictures are wonderful. I would highly recommend even a copy.

Stunning clarity, written with clear memory of the war
This review comes from a reading of the original 1894 edition. Filled with many obscure and forgotten details, this book is a treasure for Civil War historians. Songs, complete with full lyrics, as well as specific orders of battle give this reading a timely presence. Written in the traditional language of the era, the events have a kind of realism that brings you face to face with history. Originally this volume was sold by subscription only @ N.Y. BY KNIGHT AND BROWN. After having this book in my possession for many years it is very exciting to see that it has been reprinted at long last.

Campfire and Battlefield
The Civil War was the most important conflict the U.S. has ever been involved in, bar none. The military, ethical, and governmental consequences have been enormous. Campfire & Battlefield gives us a unique perspective of this great event.

Cancer Diagnosis: What To Do Next
W. John Diamond, M.D., a board-certified pathologist and alternative medicine expert, and W. Lee Cowden, M.D., who is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and clinical nutrition, joined forces with Burton Goldberg, author of numerous books on alternative medicine, to write Cancer Diagnosis: What To Do Next.

Many people don't know where to turn for information when diagnosed with cancer. And the answers they often get from medical professionals include few options. Lack of knowledge causes many people to undergo treatments they don't want.
Goldberg says that "there is no single magic bullet cure for cancer. Many factors contribute to the development of cancer and many modalities and substances must be used to reverse it."

The authors emphasize that never giving up hope is a critical first step in cancer treatment, no matter what therapy is chosen. They then outline some positive steps that patients can take that will help them chose the therapy that's best for them. Included in this section is a simple test that reveals whether a tumor will respond to chemotherapy, and if so, what the smallest effective dosage is.

They also discuss the causes of cancer, and offer suggestions for prevention and early detection. They provide complete information about testing methods used by alternative practitioners that aid in developing effective treatment plans.

Nutrition plays a big role both in prevention and treatment of cancer, and the authors explain how to choose the best diet for you. They also explain the role of supplements, such as vitamins and minerals, in strengthening the body.

Herbs and other nontoxic therapies can be very helpful for many people. All the details are included, as well as complete information on techniques for stimulating the immune system. Detoxification and energy therapies are also explained.
Detoxification is especially important because of all the pollutants in our air, water, and food. According to the authors, "most conventional doctors do not take these factors into consideration when treating cancer."

Each chapter includes "Quick Definitions," which are explanations of medical terms, in the margins, making it easy to understand the text. Whenever a special test or procedure is discussed, contact information is provided.

"Alternative medicine has established the causes of cancer--from radiation and dietary factors and pesticide residues to stress and dental factors and free radicals--and has safe, nontoxic, and effective therapies that can address each one." Cancer Diagnosis gathers all this information into one easy-to-use book. It's an essential reference for anyone desiring full information on treatment options.

Essential, life-saving, quality-of-life enhancing reading.
Cancer Diagnosis: What To Do Next is an indispensable guide to alternative medical approaches to treating cancer, choosing a physician and a course of treatment, the role of sophisticated diagnostic equipment in mapping out a treatment plan, the role of energy in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, non-toxic alternatives to chemotherapy, innovative techniques that fight cancer by boosting the immune system, the role of diet and nutritional supplements in fighting cancer, and the importance of maintaining a hopeful attitude during treatment and recovery from cancer. Cancer Diagnosis: What To Do Next is essential, life-saving, quality-of-life enhancing reading for anyone with the diagnosis of any type of cancer.

Telling the truth
This book tells the truth on what is available in the fight against cancer. After speaking to doctors who gave my loved one NO HOPE and said "there is nothing to be done", when they should have said WE DONT know what to do. This book is the American way. Bravo! Shame on the medical industry.

A must have! Orthodox, accurate, helpful and fun too!
WARNING! ONCE YOU START READING FATHER JOHN AND FATHER KEN'S BOOK YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP!!!!
This book is essential for ALL Catholics and for anyone who wants to learn more about Catholicism. Next to THE Bible, this will be considered the "bible" for anyone who has a question about the history, doctrine, dogma and practice of the Catholic faith. It is well written in clear, concise and "readable" language. "Catholicism For Dummies" is an excellent learning tool, as well as a super reference and research source.
This book will make excellent gifts for your family members and friends, Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Buy extra copies at Amazon.com ...
For Catholics, here's another chance to spread God's word as we are called to do, and an opportunity to draw in those who are curious, but hesitant to take the next step towards conversion to Catholicism. For non-Catholics, you will not find a better book to learn the basics and much more about our faith. Go ahead, jump on this one! You will not regret purchasing this awesome book!

Reliable and Easy-to-Comprehend Catholic Info
Catholic teaching in a mass-appeal format, "Catholicism For Dummies" is an easy-to-understand, nuts-and-bolts guide to what's really Catholicism. (See the Imprimatur in the front pages.) Authors Fr. John Trigilio Jr. and Fr. Ken Brighenti know their subject matter inside and out and backwards, offering clear, understandable, and down-to-earth explanations of complex Catholic belief. Fr. Trigilio and Fr. Brighenti explain the logic behind the Catholic veneration of Mary and the saints, for example, and readers can enjoy the careful reasoning behind Catholic doctrine. This book is a real eye opener -- not just for readers who may know nothing about being Catholic, but for many devout Catholics who are still fuzzy and misled on any number of Catholic-specific terms and concepts, i.e. the redemptive nature of suffering, the communion of saints, the five proofs of St. Thomas Aquinas, the magisterium, infallibility, papal election, natural family planning, the Real Presence, exorcism, excommunication, annulments, canon law, natural moral law, the canonization process, and convalidation ceremonies, as well as some of the more newsy issues, i.e. the Church's viewpoint on the death penalty and war, why women can't be priests, and why abortion is wrong. This title is a MUST for anyone interested in becoming Catholic, as well as Catholics in general.

Unfortunately, much misinformation is out there in print regarding the Catholic faith, and even the right information is sometimes difficult to understand for Catholics, much less non-Catholics. So, too, studious Catholics may have read a number of books by Catholic authors, i.e. St. Augustine, Chesterton, Fr. Bernard Groeschel, St. Theresa of Avila, yet they still don't have a complete handle on some of the basics, but "Catholicism For Dummies" fills in all the blanks and casts away the falsehoods.

This book should find a place in every Catholic home and in every high-school senior and college freshman catechism class.

Necessary Reading on Both Sides of the Fence
As a retired college professor and as a former Director of a Pontifical Center for Catechetical Studies, I fully endorse and highly recommend this book to both non-Catholic and Catholic alike. Long ago in the seminary, we referred to a few indispensable books as VADEMECUMS, from the Latin "vade" (to take) "cum" (with). In other words, a 'vademecum' was any book which you wanted and needed to "take with you" wherever you went since it was so helpful. "Catholicism for Dummies" can and will be a vademecum as many people who read this will hopefully dispel erroneous ideas, prejudices, false conclusions, myths, fears, lies, and misinformation on Catholicism yet prolific in our time.

While dispelling the wrong data, "Catholicsim for Dummies" also presents the true and authentic beliefs, practices, prayer & spirituality as well as moral and institutional dimensions to this ancient, worldwide Christian religion. It is a wonderful introduction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and it acquaints the non-Catholic with a one BILLION plus member church while reaquainting the Catholic to his/her roots and heriage.

Engagingly Texas! A fun and interesting read.
What a tragic loss to all Texans (and those who want to be) that Dian Malouf's book "Cattle Kings" is out of print. It's witty, historically correct and an obvious work from the heart. Please reprint this classic cowboy delight!

Cattle Kings gives the clear perspective of a Texas-Insider
This is a must have book for any person who is interested in Texana. It is very represetative of most of the regions of the State, including South, Central and Coastal Texas. Please note: Do not buy this book if you only want to read about the King Ranch.

A Most Engaging work about Texan's Love of Ranches.
This book provides a personal and engaging look into the lives of some of the wealthiest and most private ranches in Texas. Anyone who has an interest in the Mystique that IS Texas will love this book. This book provides a look at the "real world" of Texas ranch life--it is a history of a fading tradition of true ranching that has made Texas what it is today.

The best Mini-Cat book around!
As a former manager for a large aquarium shop I purchased a lot of freshwater fish. This was one of my best and favorite reference guides for identification and information about not only the ones I ordered, but the "stow-a-ways" which sometimes sneak in!

Great for the beginner and the experienced keeper as well and well worth the money!

Excellent All Around Book on Catfish Care!
Working as a manager in one of the largest aquarium shops in my state several years ago, I had a perfect opportunity to know and use many books. Some were excellent and others a waste of money. This book is an excellent guide to one of my favorite fish...the cat! Different types of cats are pictured in photos or detailed drawings to make identification much easier. Well worth every penny, it is a must for anyone truly interested in their care!

Colored Atlas of Miniature Catfish
What a fantastic book! I raise corys and was looking for a book that would give me more information on specific species. This book gives a very in depth description of the spawning process for Corys in general then gives more specifics under the individual species if they differ from the "general". It includes advice about water temperature, PH, and water hardness. It is just what I was looking for and is a valuable resource for anyone who is raising corys for breeding or has them in their tanks "just for fun."

Commitment in the Workplace : Theory, Research, and Application
Published in Hardcover by Sage Publications (1997)
Authors: Natalie J. Allen and John P. Meyer
Amazon base price: $59.95
Average review score:

A résumé of more than 10 years of research.
For newcomers in the field, this is probably the best book available.

Clear, Straightforward.
This is the best book about commitment in the workplace so far as I am concerned. Readers may find the style of writing, contents and structure so clear and straightforward.

If you STILL recognise employees' commitment to their organisation is composed of only one dimension based upon "affection" or "identification", probably you're wrong. And if you find your coworkers and supervisors may seem committed to the organisation, their behaviours lead to various results, not simply determined as a good citizen's.

This book will give you a key to solve what we think about "complexed" commitment. Essential for MBA students, researchers and HR managers. Good work, in a word.

A Complete book about organizational commitment.
The book is a complete review and application of the Meyer e Allen three component conceptual model of organizational commitment. An indispensable book for organizational commitment research.

Baby Boomers Take Note
This is the type of book anyone with elder or soon to be elder family or loved one, needs to read BEFORE you need to provide care. The book takes you through a logical thought process that will remove a lot of the stress and anxiety that elder care can produce. The ideas presented go beyond elder care and address real life issues including work, family and self. My review is based on what this book brought to me with my personal experience of dealing with a sick parent. I highly recommend it.

Excellent handbook for working family caregivers
If you are caring for an elderly loved one and employed too, then this book is A MUST. It provides practical information to help you sort through the overwhelming tasks of working and caregiving. It is a valuable resource for persons who are new or experienced with caregiving.

Friendships : Lovers, Huggers & Others

Author: John Calvin Tyler
Amazon base price: $14.95

Excellent Personality
John Tyler is an excellent personality. I met him today and his way of interaction and honesty was excellent. And this book was excellent. Hats off John.

I could not put this book down!
I have this book. I also loaned it to my girl friend, and she read the whole book in about 2.5 hours. She loved it, too. It's a book for anyone really. We enjoyed reading the book because we could look back over our lives (we're in our 70s), and reflect on things we could have done to improve our relationships with others. Our children should read this book to enhance their marriages, and their kids should read it before they plan to marry. They could take the tests after reading the book to see if they are compatible - for the long haul.

Fascinating look at relationships. Good, the bad, & the ugly
I am the Author. Some friends have read the book, and have learned how to become "aware" of and appreciative of good relationships. Some have had to recognize bad relationships, and have come to the realization that it may be time to "cut the cord" because "love in the relationship is dead." Others have improved their relationships by taking the two relationship tests in the book, and have been willing to work on the areas that need attention. Overall, some 304 people (web statistics) have read the book since its publication, and have enjoyed it - including Barney Frank, U.S. Congressman - who endorsed the rear cover.

Gone to Sanctuary: From the Sins of Confusion

A precious gift from a talented artist.
Our home is full of the books that we have been collecting over the past thirty-five years and we visit them all from time to time. But "Gone To Sanctuary", is one of those dynamic, evocative books that we keep close by so that we can continue to revisit and share its richness with our family and friends.

The previous reviewers have already expressed my own view of Mr Kiewit's visually and verbally stunning book. All I can add is that "Gone To Sanctuary" is a precious gift from a talented artist and that it will always occupy a place of honour in our home.

Evokes the grandeur and adventure of our wild West
John Kiewit's photographs make me want to get in my car and head to the places of Western America that look blank on the maps. The richness of texture and color in his photgraphs alone are enough to make this book a welcome treasure in your coffee table library. But it is the quotes he pulled from his own diaries of a generation of traveling the backroads of the West, along with appropriate words from others -- famous and little-known -- that set this book apart from the many other fine photographic essays available. The words and pictures together stimulate wanderlust, whether it be the armchair or actual type. Whenever I reread "On the Road" -- I want to get back on the open highway. So is it for me with Kiewit's photographs. Fairness requires me to announce here that he and I are friends, and we've traveled many of the roads of the West together. This fact does not prejudice my opinion of his book. Take a look at it for yourself and you'll agree that the power of his landscapes and his eye for the ghosts of passing civilization make Kiewit a worthy heir to the traditions of Adams, Weston, and Walker.

It is the best of books; it is the best of books
At first glance John Kiewit¹s GONE TO SANCTUARY looks like an elegant coffee table book of beautiful photographs. It truly is much more than that. Kiewit takes us on a journey of the American West that few have had the opportunity to experience; fewer have taken the time to appreciate.

For those who will not be able to make the trip, and for those who may very well be inspired to take it after enjoying this remarkable book, John displays his photographic expertise and communicates his passions for our gratification.

Opposite each stunning photograph is a quote that Kiewit feels appropriate to the photo. One can often linger on a quote for almost as long as on the photograph. The interplay between the image and the words is one of the things that sets this photo-journal apart from others. The obviously well read Kiewit drew most of the quotes from writers who he felt best expressed the emotion spawned by the photograph. Where he finds it appropriate, John quotes from his travel journal that spans three decades. It is when he uses his own quotes that we often feel closest to the author.

It is not an exaggeration to say that everything about GONE TO SANCTUARY is outstanding. Kiewit has laid out his art, and his heart, for those who can appreciate the true beauty of this publication. This book generates an abundance of personal thought, and one ought not attempt read it in a single sitting. As John quotes Everett Ruess on page 74, I have seen almost more beauty than I can bear.

Best seller "Emotionally Charged Learning"..lead me here
I read this book after hearing about the buzz of "Emotionally Charged Learning" and reading it and discovering that this book was mentioned. They are both great books to inspire the workforce to be more competitive.

The Real Deal
As an insatiable consumer of business books, I can confidently say that "Get Weird!" is the most engaging, entertaining, yet useful business book I've ever read. It's chock full of great ideas guaranteed to make your workplace the one people on the outside want to get into. Putzier's humorous writing style and knack for knowing a great idea when he sees one make this one of the most enjoyable and beneficial business books you'll ever buy. I've recommended it to hundreds of people and will continue to for the rest of my career.

Good conversational thought-provoker
When John Putzier was a child, his mother told him he was weird. For most kids, being told they were weird might be traumatizing. Not John. He prided himself on being weird-different. Over the years of his career in human resource consulting, professional speaking, and college teaching, he has prided himself on being weird-just a little bit different, off-beat. The power of being off-beat is encapsulated in a quotation I learned in my growing-up years, "It's the usual thing, done in the unusual way, that captures the attention of the world."

John certainly has captured the attention of the world with his work. And how he shows us how to make this happen in our lives as executives, managers, and human resource professionals.

Weirdness is doing things differently. The results can be very positive, both in your confidence and in the results you can achieve. Putzier spends the first part of the book explaining this and setting up the reader to receive and consider 100 thought-provoking ideas. This section is titled Tapping Your Natural Weirdness, aka [also known as] Creative Thinking and Problem-Solving. The double title theme continues through the other parts of the book, enabling the reader to comfortably transition between Putzier's weird titles and terminology that will be more familiar.

One hundred ideas are presented in the balance of the book, categorized in seven sections. Titles of those sections are Weird Ideas to Win Today's Talent, aka Recruitment; Weird Ideas for the Care and Feeding of Today's Talent, aka Retention; Weird Ideas for Changing Your Company, aka Fun & Games with a Purpose and a Profit; Weird Ideas for Perks, Pay, and Pats on the Back, aka Recognition and Incentives; Weird Ideas for Educating Today's Talent, aka Training and Development; and Weird Ideas for Enhancing Your Company Image, aka Sales, Service, Public Relations & Personal Satisfaction. Idea 101 is in Part 8, where the author suggests that you have other ideas in your head that you can add to his list. Remember, Putzier is endeavoring to stimulate your thinking, not just give you pat answers or magic pills.

There are several additional features that add value to this book. The Table of content includes a phrase under each idea listing to quickly explain what the idea entails. An alphabetical list of ideas appears at the end of the book as an unusual, but helpful, index.

The book is easy to read and serves as a fine read-through in addition to a good reference book for follow-up.
