The Love Poems of John Donne
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (07 April, 1983)

Donne's depth and passion (Hardcover edition)
This lovely volume beautifully designed on creamy white paper brings to the reader the love poems of John Donne (1572-1631). A comprehensive and sympathetic introduction by the editor Charles Fowkes accompanies it. Mr. Fowkes sets out to explain the background of Donne's poetry and the influence thereof on his own life. But anyone who intends to read Donne should be well prepared. Although his use of language is colloquial, it's riddled with allusions. Donne certainly had a vivid and intense imagination. Further I think that familiarity with authors from the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries would be an asset.

Expect no cozy love poetry here. Donne's attitude is defiant and aggressive. He certainly knew all of the stages and emotions of love ranging from rapture to deep despair. The young Donne's disrespect for women and his intense sexuality might perhaps put some readers off. Though the courtship and marriage to Anne More (in 1601) would bring a change. In terms of class Anne was by far Donne's superior, and her father forbade the marriage. Yet Donne had deeply fallen in love, and put his career on the line to marry Anne secretly. It cut him down in arrogance. Anne died in 1617, worn out by her yearly pregnancies (Donne had quite an appetite).

The reader can track the courtship and marriage of Anne and John Donne throughout the poems. But often Donne will address an imaginary lady. As Mr. Fowkes indicates the background of his poetry is difficult to pinpoint. And add to this the fact which we should also not forget, that Donne was a Catholic who converted to the Anglican Church and felt guilty about it.

A complicated man harbouring many selves and souls. Even though I may not agree with Donne's aggressive ways in several poems, he expresses himself with such an intensity and passion (that I cannot avoid him), which makes up for some of the most compelling and brilliant poetry ever written in the English language.

Excellent combination of writer and voice.
The voice of Richard Burton reciting John Donne is a magical combination. Burton has the flair that captures the feeling and intensity of this poet. Donne, known for his writing ability, his technique is known as conciet, can be dense to read. Burton opens up the words and the meanings with his rich voice and perfect inflection.

Whether you are timid about poetry or love John Donne, this is the point of no return.

Spiritual Magic-- for Children and Adults!
As a newcomer to the works of C. S. Lewis, I'm thrilled with "The Magic Never Ends". Recently, I've read "A Grief Observed", "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", and
"The Screwtape Letters", three very diverse examples of Lewis's ability to offer spiritual magic to all age groups. John R. Duncan said it best in his introduction: "The greatness of C. S. Lewis's writing comes from his ability to simplify an intellectual or philosophical concept and to assist readers on a spiritual journey of their own." With input from other Lewis scholars, Douglas Gresham, Walter Hooper, Dr. Dabney Hart, Dr. Lyle Dorsett, Dr. Christopher W. Mitchell, and Colin Manlove,"The Magic Never Ends" provides a "rainbow overview" of one of the 20th Century's most influential writers, C. S. Lewis.

It really is magic!
This book is magical. I have been reading C.S. Lewis for quite a few years now. The authors have captured something of why Lewis' books have never gone out of print. The chapter title "The True Myth" alone is more than worth the price of the book.

A Student of Krumholz's
I am a student at the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, OH, where Norman Krumholz is a full-time professor. In 1994, I had the pleasure of taking an urban studies class that he taught. I enjoyed the class so much that I went on to take other urban studies classes, and eventually changed my major from journalism to urban planning. Dr. Krumholz is a brilliant man, and a gifted orator. His class had such a profound impact on me. I ended up on a completely different career path because of his teachings. It's rare to find someone so dedicated to social equality. I highly recommend anything he's written.

Krumholz is crafty and insightful. What a read!
Krumholz describes a planning experience that is so instructive that it will alter the way we look at professional planning forever. His experiences are documentations of persistence, triumph, defeat, and victory.

Wonderful Book!
John Rush gives us a present day triumph of faith. The book is masterfully written in a personal down to earth style. The author takes you from the California gold country, to the most remote location on earth to a little island in vanuatu which is home to an an amazing tribe of people. He tells the true story of a young man's struggle to come to grips with the reality of God, and the blessings that come from obedience to God.

An amazing journey across the globe and through faith.
Mr. Rush presents us with a thrilling account of faith and a journey to an isolated island. The book is a masterpiece, detailing an early life as an atheist to a switch to a missionary to the islands around Vanuatu. Everything from being made a temporary pastor to avoiding drive-by shootings. This book proves that God is active in the world today, and deeply cares for those unreached people in the world. A true-life account of a missionary, and a wonderful example of God's work in our world.

Visual Thinkers Paradise
If you have trouble understanding and particularly visualizing what mathematical formulae mean. If you have a belief that all mathematical concepts CAN be visualized if only mathematicians tried hard enough. If you like math books but wish there were more pictures. If you wish there were instructions on things to do in Math books other than write out formulae and solutions. If you want hope that there's new and exciting stuff out there that you can find by doing things with paper other than writing on it. THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. A particularly interesting section on how to generate the Cantor Set by Geometric iteration using the tent map and a good explanation of sets related to the Cantor set and the general relationship of things like the Cantor Set to more complicated fractals. One of the most interesting books I have eever read vastly increased my understanding and provided me with valuable ideas to furthur my own creative efforts. Well done HHandP I look forward to the new book.

Two thumbs up for this book.
"Mathematical Reflections" can be enjoyed by anyone with a high school level of mathematical education but will also interst the more advanced reader. Topics from tiling of the plane to paper folding to Fibonacci numbers are presented in a clear and interesting manner along with problems and solutions. If you ever wondered why the ratio of consecutive Fibonacci numbers converges to the "golden ratio", this book is worth the purchase price

Measure of Emptiness: Grain Elevators in the American Landscape (Creating the North American Landscape)

Amazing Landscape Photographs
Frank Gohlke captures the landscape of mid-America like no other photographer has! You can see deep into the soul of farmland by looking at his photographs, which were taken with a large format camera.

Great Book
I did a lot of research about the American grain elevator. It was hard to come up with information that discussed aspects other than dust explosions and engineering. If you want to know about other aspects of the grain elevator, I would recomend this book. It also has great photographs!

Mind Boggling!
An amazing journey into a flight of digital art and design. Very compelling and provacative quotes that look and feel like Mcluhan's The Medium is the Massage of the 90's. An astounding eight color masterpiece.

Mini : The Design Icon of a Generation.
OUTSTANDING book, probably the BEST that I have in my collection, this is a MUST own for your MINI library...GET IT NOW, you will NOT be sorry.

Most complete coverage of the Mini I've ever seen
I have been a Mini Fan since the mid-sixties when they were racing at many "club" venues in Southern California. I actually became a "Fanatic" in 1986 when I actually purchased a Mini and have read many, many books on the Mini since. This book contains lots of pictures (along with many facts) that I have not seen before in any other publication. The book is very well laid out and the pictures are really well done. I enjoyed it immensely and wholeheartedly recommend it. A "must read" for any Mini Nut.

Outstanding Arrangement and Selection of Artwork
Mr. Bertram Ulrich demonstrates rare talent in picking out selections from NASA's art collection that are emblematic of different period's of the Agency's history.

An exquisitely illustrated history of the space program.
Mary Kalamaras was the in-house STC editor not the author. Please correct. I wanted, when planning the publication of this book, to publish an exciting and riveting history of the space program. I wanted to illustrate it with the extraordinary art collection that NASA has been building from its inception, inviting artists from Robert Rauschenberg to Norman Rockwell to attend its launches and observe and document its work. This published work is my dream come true. Brilliantly written and finally designed by Nai Chang, and superbly printed, it is everything a gift book is supposed to be: a great story informed by extraordinary images... in this case one of the most absorbing stories of the twentieth century. A must for anyone who loves history
This book is one of my absolute favorites. When I pick it up, I feel like I am transported to another time and another place. The pictures and stories depicting life in Nauvoo in the 1830's and 1840's are treasures that will remain on my bookshelf and in my heart.

Beautiful photographs and compelling history
This is a wonderful book that is both interesting and visually stunning. You will learn about the LDS people who settled and made Nauvoo the properous city it once was as well as see lovely photographs of the buildings and the area. You'll feel like you're right there.
