The Love of God: He Will Do Whatever It Takes to Make Us Holy

The clueless given a clue.
A true inspiration. I am now reading my Bible again with a much better understanding of what I had read before. I didn't realize how "clueless" I was until reading this book. I can now re-read the Bible with the awesome insight (i.e., a clue) of John MacArthur, Jr. I could hear him speaking throughout the book in his intelligent, clear and flowing style, just like his radio programs. A must read for believers. It also gives you something to go on when speaking to non-believers who blatently show their non-belief and are "proud" of it. My husband will read this book next and I will be sure to loan it to my friends so they too can "get a clue."

great book
The thoutful presentation matches with his radio bible teaching. Great preacher/teacher.

I love this book!
This book is well balanced and Biblically based. I thoughly enjoyed reading MacAuthur's book the Love Of God. The book was challenging and thought provoking. Wiht out a doubt it widened view of who God is and what He is about. Thank you Brien Young

The Mortification of Sin

Absolutely Essential
This is a work that deserves to be read and reread. John Owen has tackled the heavy issue of sin with more insight than most modern day psychologists. He thoroughly explains what it means to mortify sin by the Holy Spirit, and provides the equivalent of a 12 step program, Puritan-style. Of course, those steps are heavily interlaced with secondary points and supporting scripture texts. Eminently practical, completely biblical, and ultimately an uplifting look at the power of Jesus Christ over the dominion of sin.

Recommended for every Christ, but be prepared for difficult vocabulary and sentence structure. However, as an introduction to John Owen, this is probably one of the more accessible works.

Masterly Meditations on Mortification
Also available in The Works of John Owen Vol. 6, this is a masterpiece on how to kill corruption in one's personal life. It is less than 100 pages long (in my copy!), but it is packed with some of the most insightful thinking regarding sanctification, that I have ever read. Owen packs much into this brief book leaving hundreds of rocks just turned over for the reader to search out treasures for himself. There are nine preliminary steps to mortifying sin which were of great practical help to me. They are: 1. Consider the dangerous symptoms of your lust; 2. Get a clear sense of the guilt and danger of the sin; 3. Load your conscience with the guilt of the "perplexing distemper"; 4. Have a vehement desire for deliverance; 5. Determine whether the sin is rooted in your natural temperment; 6. Prevent the opportunites for sin; 7. Vigorously oppose the first actings of sin; 8. Think deeply about the majesty of God; 9. Speak no peace to your own disquieted heart - let God speak it. These principles form the bulk of the book, but they are fenced in by strong opposition to all legalistic methods of dealing with sin and with hearty exhortations to focus on Christ and be empowered by the Spirit in the whole task of mortifying sin. An excellent treatment of the subject and worthy of repeated readings. In fact, it is #17 on my "Master Reading List" (which is a short list of the best books I have read and which deserve to be mastered - if you are interested email me at bghedges@thewhitetail.net)

Puritan Literature on Practical Righteousness
This provides most thorough and explicit instructions for the Christian life. It is outstanding in its class, a very encouraging work.

God's Smuggler Plus
This is an heirhoom edition which includes the text of Brother Andrew's world-wide best seller, God's Smuggler, plus snatches of other stories of the Persecuted Church. Also a CD of Jars of Clay. Highly recommended.

If you have never read Brother Andrews story, you have no idea what you are missing!!! It is such a page turning adventure! Hard to believe one man could go through so much! Also as a bonus there is a CD with Jars of Clays song "This Road" (a soul sturing song!). You can also put the CD in your computer and see Jars of Clay's pictures while they were visiting the persecuted church. This is a great book and will challenge you in the Lord!

Great Stuff!
While not as essential as his "Against Heresies", "On the Apostolic Preaching" contains a well of information regarding the early Church's teaching especially in regards to the truth of the Holy Trinity. Great writing from a great father, highly recommended.

Excellent insight into the teaching of the early church
Assuming that this is a true representation of an actual writing, it is invaluable for all Christians in showing us what the manner of preaching was at the very beginning. Of this fact, I really have no doubt, and accept this writing as that of Irenaeus himself. Irenaeus was taught by Polycarp, who was a disciple of the Apostle John, so we have here a teaching of the preaching told by a second generation source.

Execllent treatise by Irenaeus
This is a work by Irenaeus that wasn't discovered until fairly recently, so it is not included in the excellent 10 volume Ante-Nicene Fathers set. The work is essentially a summary of the Christian faith by the Bishop Irenaeus (lived around 177 AD). The work 'recounts all the various deeds of God culminated in Jesus Christ.' It, unlike the works of Justin and Athenagoras from the same period, is non-polemical and non-apologetic. There are quite a few notes, a nice introduction, and some Greek words provided in the text when the English translation provided is uncertain.

A practical guide for changing a parent's behavior.
:
I am surprised that the principles in the book are not more commonly used by educators. Clear and practical information and guidelines cover every page.
:
Many of the behavioral modifications recommended by Dr. Maag don't just work in our interaction with our kids, they also work quite well with adults.
:
Probably the most interesting benefit I got from the book has been the opportunity to alter my own behavior, which, in turn, made a world of difference in helping our daughter to alter hers.
:
Highly recommended reading for parents, educators and for anyone looking to find different, more effective ways of dealing with others and with our own imprinted habits. An open mind is required for the readers of this book to gain any noticeable benefit.

A common-sense approach that really works...
"Parenting bookshelves typically contain dozens of books offering endless techniques for behavior modification. This book may be the one that will help parents sort out the worthwhile from the drivel. John Maag, PhD (Univ. of Nebraska) offers a strict and compassionate approach to behavior modification, arguing that punishment per se is almost never effective. The trouble is that we expect the good and punish the bad and this only leads to confrontation. Maag shows us how to use reinforcers, star charts, time outs and contracts, concluding that self-monitoring by kids leads to self-control. Finally, he 1ooks at ADD and depression as behavior problems that parents can deal with rather than as psychiatric labels attached to kids. Maag brings years of working with exasperated parents to his work. Refreshingly full of common sense and well worth reading." -- Library Journal

If you want a good book on parenting, this is it!
Even though there are one million books on parenting, very few of them are useful and very few provide information that is actually helpful. This book is different; provides really sensible information. Life with my children has actually improved since I've applied the knowledge I received from this book. What a relief to finally have a book that deals directly with the ins and outs of punishment and offers a better way of disciplining children other than grounding them

An answer for the restless mind
I discovered that upon reading this text, a part of my mind which was always seeking to understand this life had finally been satisfied! I do not consider myself a practicioner of buddhism, much less an expert, and yet what it had to say was clear and persuasive.(...)

Self-Liberation: Through Seeing with Naked Awareness
The only thing to add would be that this is a new addition of previously published "Self-Liberation: Through Seeing with Naked Awareness". The work itself is a terma(treasure teaching) of Guru Padmasambhava discovered by master Karma Lingpa. Personally, I found this book of a great value for the reason of a very lucid INSTRUCTION rather than just theory, which is sufficiently expounded, too. It gives a clear explanation as to why and how the principle of a spiritual teaching can be misunderstood and points out directly on the right method of application of this knowledge. I would recommend this book to everybody!

No better book on the subject has come out since.
This book stands head and shoulders above every book on the subject that has come out since, especially the recent glut of "new age" fluff books. (Hint: never subscribe to a philosophy with a name that rhymes with "sewage.")

On Point
This book is one of the more sophisticated of the books that deals with this topic. Givin in a traditional fashion that could be annoted only to such a scholar, and pioneer, as John Woodroffe. The detail is uncompairable and unless you have a solid understanding for the language and representations, it is a hard read.

The best work on Kundalini in English
This work will bring the reader into the power of Devatma Shakti Kundalini just by reading and pondering the text. Old feelings will find a home in the transformation from experience to understanding as the book flows forward. Gentle delight is the mark of a true Tantric text and this book, although strange and difficult at times, is pure de-light. If you want to know about Chakras and such, this is a classic text by one who really knows. Old and grand, this is a favorite treasure of mine and one I give away regularly to friends who must have more. Lam-to-Aum... Riley Jackson

this book is great
dr. braddock was able to utilize her own experiences of battling (and surviving!) this disease to help others in a similar situation. she saw a need for a simple, easy to understand text to inform and inspire both those living with breast cancer and their loved ones. as a woman (and as her daughter) i am so proud to see someone turning her own life experience into such a positive and constructive resource.

updated regularly - last one just out
this book has been the most satisfying effort of my life - we update its content every year or so as new information come out, and that last update was just accomplished. Over 30,000 copies have been sold throughout the country, and we hear from so many women whom it has helped cope with the diagnosis. Thank you, all of you. Wishing you peace and joy.

excellent, concise, humorous at times
recently updated, this small book gives hope and practical, simple-to-read information to all who are confronted with this terrible disease. Patients, family members, friends will all benefit from reading this work.

Excellent companion book to Breast Cancer Survival Manual
This book is an excellent companion book to Dr. John Link's first book "Breast Cancer Survival Manual". His first book is a good crash course on all the information and terminology needed to understand your diagnosis and treatments. This book however is more personal. It empowers you to be your best advocate. He encourages second opinions and treating the WHOLE woman... not just her cancer. So often physicians only see the woman as a part that is damaged. They don't consider quality of life issues along with their treatments. I recommend this book highly.

Advice for the person - not just the patient
A diagnosis of breast cancer can make you feel powerless. You are thrust into a world where nothing makes sense and asked to make life and death decisions - or have others make them for you. Dr. Link is a practicing oncologist who understands this.

Taking Charge of Your Breast Cancer empowers you. It gives insight into what is going on in your body, in the doctor's office and in your world. The advice does not come packaged in a condensending tone. You feel that this man knows what it is like to be a patient.

I found myself nodding in agreement with so much that he said. Second opinions, alternative treatments, chemo before surgery... so many topics that are presented clearly. This book makes taking charge - getting control back - so much easier.

The focus of this book is curing breast cancer. Recurrences are real and he deals with this, but he concentrates on living life to the fullest. The positive message is good to hear.

Living Through Breast Cancer
This is a must-read book for women with breast cancer. Dr. Link's advice in a nutshell: Make sure you get the best medical care available, know your chance of long-term survival is good, and don't let breast cancer stop you from living your life to the fullest. If you've been newly diagnosed with breast cancer, read Dr. Link's first book to understand the basics of what you need to know to make the best decisions about your treatment. Then read this book, which is about the experience of breast cancer within your life as a whole. It is extraordinarily well written and readable, and will help you gain perspective about the emotionally devastating diagnosis of breast cancer.

We loved this book!!
I read a borrowed copy of this book aloud to my two children ages 8 and 11. We loved the story of John and Helen Dekker moving, with their family, into Toli River Valley area of New Guinea to be with the Dani people.

The work they were allowed to do was very inspiring. It was so interesting to consider explaining and teaching about Jesus and the Word of God to a people that have no knowlege of Him. There were many things that did not have direct paralels with the Dani culture, we enjoyed reading about how the Dekkers conveyed the message. The results were so touching. It reminded me, that each of us is in the same position and can be touched and changed as dramatically as the Dani's were changed by knowing and following Jesus.

The spirit that the Lord imparted to the Dani's under John and Helen Dekker was very precious. They desired to give to others what had been given to them. And they endeavored to do it.

We all loved meeting the different Dani's through the story. We will only travel in wururu's after this, never airplanes. We laughed at the Dani's attempt to convey modesty, cried at their losses and really appreciated the sacrifices that were made by the many people involved in this work, knowing that sacrifices extract a price.

We all agreed that we would need to get our own copy of this book. Another book in a similar vein we enjoyed was "In Search of the Source"--can't remember who it is by.

You will not be dissapointed.
This is an amazing and inspiring story. I wish more people could know about this. It would make a great movie. If you are contemplating on reading this book, take my advice and do so. You will not be dissapointed. - DaveDavidson.com

Great True story of StoneAge Tribe entry into the 20th Cent.
This is a very readable account of the emergence of a tribe that was literally in the Stone Age (no knowledge of or use of any metal!) into the 20th Century during the 60's and 70's. These People are still assimilating into the Indonesian culture today. Much of the story is about the evangelisation in a People centered, keep the culture manner. The book is co-authored by and about my father - so I have a personal interest in this story! In fact I grew up as a child in the midst of it.
