A to-the-point primer for political action for nurses.
In contrast with a neighborhood swimming pool, in politics the more people who jump in the cleaner it becomes, say Marilyn Goldwater and Mary Jane Lloyd Zusy in their political primer for nurses. Nurses are the major providers of health care in the United States, and for the past 25 years have been getting their feet wet in matters affecting health policy. Prescription for Nurses urges the reader to start small. Become active in voter registration, community politics and political campaigns. The book acknowledges that 95% of professional nurses are women who are wives, mothers and caregivers of elderly parents. Elected or appointed officials who are not particularly knowledgeable about health care create health policy. Goldwater and Zusy stress that the simple act of sending a letter or postcard to a legislator concerning a health issue is a significant political beginning. The book is well-written with concise chapters on the media and how to use it, effective lobbying and how to run for office. Prescription for Nurses' chapter on political action committees (PACS) includes a historical perspective and the best explanation of the PAC "soft money" loophole I have ever read. Nurses, pick up this prescription before you dive into the political pool.

Not intended for those intolerant of recreational marijuana
Romancing Mary Jane: A Year In The Life Of A Failed Marijuana Grower is the memoir of Michael Pools, an unabashed, unashamed, self-professed Canadian marijuana cultivator who combined his love of the outdoors with his passion for psychoactive plants. Michael's daily life, his resistance to the pressures of Canadian anti-drug laws, as well as his travails and insights fill the pages of this eye-opening book, one which is emphatically not intended for those intolerant of recreational marijuana use, yet amusing in its own right and a thoroughly interesting and thought-provoking contribution to the national dialogue over a "cannabis culture".

Sandplay Therapy and Sources of Symbolic Healing
Mary Jane Markell has written an important book that helps elucidate why imaginal work in healing modalities such as sandplay therapy holds such transformational power. Sandplay therapists long have needed an in depth review and elaboration of what Dora Kalff taught about the transformational process in sandplay therapy as it affects the body. Kalff believed that working imaginatively with the elements of sand and water had the possibility of engaging a person in a transformative experience at a cellular level that touched upon the deepest sources of healing. This occurs at a non-verbal, symbolic level that has analogies in the ancient mystery religions. Markell writes "The logical conclusion of this process is the self as shaman, and it is in this area that the greatest changes in Western scientific and medical thought are now occurring." Jung intuitively knew about the unconscious connection between body and psyche at what he called the "psychoid" level, and it was Kalffian sandplay that demonstrated and offered the experience of this connection. Mary Jane Markell's book offers extensive amplification of this wisdom.

Sand, Water, Silence-The Embodiment of Spirit provides a container for the author's considerable creative and intellectual energies that focus on distilling and uniting a wide array of traditions and viewpoints. These include Eastern and Western, scientific and spiritual, spatial and temporal, body and mind. She draws on and integrates ancient and modern ideas and wisdom from such diverse sources as quantum physics, Mesopotamian myths, Taoism and Buddhism, and Jungian depth psychology. She points the reader towards an integrative view that she thinks is already happening in the human collective consciousness of a transcendent state of non-duality in the reunion of the mind-body disharmony that has plagued modern man. She believes that with the conscious balancing and reconciliation of opposing traditions and perspectives into a unitive world-view a deepening understanding of the cosmos as well as a personal, individual unfolding will evolve.

Mary Jane Markell has written a book that emerged from the currents of her own individuation journey that had one beginning in her relationship to Dora Kalff and her sandplay therapy process. In the years that followed, her connection to natural and internal landscapes as well as to the world of ideas incubated. Mary Jane Markell's inspiration springs from her own internal alchemy that began in the water and earth and in the "woods and valley" of her life experiences. These provided the foundations that led to writing this book. She integrates her intuitive connections that come directly out of her with objective learning from studies and reading that she shares extensively. This is a book both to savor and enjoy.

An excellent resource for grade-school religion classes!!!
After children have performed -- or listened to -- these 25 plays, they will have quite detailed knowledge of the most familiar and important Old Testament stories. My classes' particular favorites are Noah's Ark, Ruth and Naomi, Daniel in the Lion's Den, and Queen Esther. Storylines stay close to the Bible, yet there is a great deal of humor, excitement, and nearly equivalent consideration given to female heroes as male.

Sergeant Joe
This is about an ex army man in England, around 1911. While walking home in the fog one night a girl bumps into him and sprains her ankle. It is romantic and funny, also a mystery with bad guys after them. I loved the characters in this book and will look for more by this author.

ahead of its time
It's hard not to envision the Oscar-winning movie while reading Snake Pit, but the book provides less Hollywood romance and a greater sense of the protagonist's disorientation. Her struggle to swim toward sanity's shore is palpable. The prose is terse but not always gripping; yet it convinces. An insightful, personal documentation of psychiatric institutions in its day and of mental illness in any era.

This book deserves 10 stars
I saw Sun, Moon and Stars on the shelf at a bookstore and went to it just because the cover was so beautiful. Jane Ray's artwork is fantastic and I wish there were wallpaper made out of the artistry in this book. Mary Hoffman has written a fascinating text that informs us about how many different peoples have viewed these heavenly bodies. You will not be dissapointed.

An Excellent 3 Semester Text
I am using this text in a Community College FRE102 class, and find it very effective, especially in reinforcing the concepts presented in the base material. Having taken FRE101 from a different book, I find this one is much better. My wife, who is a French teacher, looked it over, and is quite impressed with it. Many times she has said "I wish our book had that!" The practice sessions are quite good, but in my opinion there are too many "votre partenaire" exercises. Some of them could be rewritten to more advantage as personal exercises.

I bought the book/tape/cd/workbook set through the school bookstore. They are quite good, but as with other French tapes I have used, the speakers are too fast for beginners. (I.E. Me!) Also, the tapes go with the book, and the CD's go with the workbook. It's nice to have them separate, but one must be able to play both.
