Good for now
Though nearly perfect, the book leaves you with this yawning blackness of not ever truly learning of what you hoped to know about Claire Clairmont. The author is wise (and she gave the greater portion of her life to this and you can tell)...in that she allows the reader to read and come to her own conclusions. In fact, next to having Claire Clairmont's letters published as they exist (and why not?)...this is the closest most of us will ever get. And, honestly, why haven't her letters been published AS WRITTEN...Worked great with Kurt Cobain's journal. Why isn't that kind of thing happening more often?

Thinking Critically!
Excellent book, with "different" excercises that stimulates the mind into thinking in a different manner. Digs deeply into the manner into which we think, and analyzes every aspect. This book is a standard resource at all Bryant & Stratton college campuses....

Buy it if you can find it.
Unhappily momentarily out of print, _Crossriggs_ is all kinds of a pleasant surprise. It's as though you took Austen and crossed it with Louisa May Alcott and threw in a dash of Barbara Pym.
This is the story of the Hope girls-- Alexandra, who lives as an old-maid-in-waiting with her eccentric vegetarian father and Mathilda, who moves home to England with her children after being widowed in Canada. Alex is a clever, attractive, independent woman who does what she has to do for other people, and who in the end is forced to figure out what she wants for herself.
This was, as the book cover notes, the "New Woman" of the 1890s, somebody whose redemption can come from something besides relationships. Alex is so real, so full of humor, she'd be challenging even for an audience of today.
I really loved it, and warmly recommend it. Skip the pedantic introduction if you buy the Virago edition.

Dr. Hatherns Daughters; a refreshing story!
Dr.Hatherns Daughters captures your attention in the first paragraph of a mother giving birth, in the middle 1800's, to a child that will be the last face she ever sees. This book is a wholesome tale about 3 sisters post-civil war and the loves and experiences that mold each one to maturity and life rich with adventure and love for one another. Dr. Hathern has just lost his second wife to childbirth. Left a widower with twin girls and a baby, he is now ready to marry again and upset the content situation the girls have created for themselves and their doting father. This is a book you will not be able to put down and remarkably without the shock and obsenities of many of todays romance tales. You will finish this with the same feeling you had after reading "Fried Green Tomatoes". I recommend to all!

Early Widow
This was an excellent book, written in journal format. It allows a widow especially a young widow to discover that the feelings and emotions that you are going though are normal. Brings to light that you may have blessings that you are not aware of or others do not have. This book was the number one thing that helped me to handle my husbands death. I had just turned 31, a single parent and scared with no one to turn to. This book was better than group counseling as most of the people in group were older widows.

Exquisitely done: a look at how different cultures have seen
This book has some of the most fabulous artwork of all books. If you're not familiar with Jane Ray, you will never forget her amazing style after you see this book or a companion book entitled Sun, Moon and Stars. Mary Hoffman and Jane Ray team up to write and illustrate these books that show how many cultures have interpreted and been inspired by these elements and share myths, beleifs, and legends that reflect their power and influence.

informative and helpful to a non-mormon
I read this book 3 years ago when 2 brethren entered my home and offered their religion as a viable choice to my current religion. The book helped me to ask pertinent questions, especially concerning LDS' version of Biblical history.

What Mountains Want
Once upon a time, falling volcanic ash might have hurt community crops and led a brave teen to scale sacred Mount Ampato. Within the last decade, ash and smoke from Nevado Sabancaya melted slopes and led mountain climbers Johan Reinhard and Miguel Zarate to the 14-year-old's mummified body. Author Susan Vande Griek starts each chapter of her suspenseful short story with facts about finding Juanita. A GIFT FOR AMPATO also works as cultural background to Janet Buell's ICE MAIDEN OF THE ANDES, David Getz's FROZEN GIRL, Harriet Griffey's SECRETS OF THE MUMMIES, Nova's FROZEN IN HEAVEN video, and Dr Reinhard's DISCOVERING THE INCA ICE MAIDEN.

still the best source of balanced info. on home schooling
As a scholar, working as an associate professor of cultural and interdisciplinary studies at Antioch College, I have a student population that contains a large number of home schooled students. Much has been published in recent years on home schooling, but this balanced collection remains the best source of information available on home schooling. It includes information on state regulation, historical context, the reality of particular family's experiences, the motivations of different groups heavily invested in home schooling, etc...For any academic undertaking a study of home schooling, for any parent considering home schooling of their own child or children, I highly recommend a serious reading of this definitive book.
