A terribly enchanting and unforgetable love story.
The likes of this story have never been seen before, and most assuredly will never be forgotten. This is the missing piece of work that now completes the art of literature. The world of human emotion is viewed in it's most powerful, provocative energy for the first time. The ultimate fuel for the hungry soul, "Mary Dove" will ignite a fire inside you, that even time can not extinguish.

Powerful messages combined with enjoyable teen tale
Dorothy Sterling brilliantly interweaves the shocking, painful truth about segregation's effects with everyday happenings (chats in a "secret clubroom", purchasing grownup clothing, a beautiful new bedroom) with which any teen would identify. The pleasant and friendly aspects of the latter, combined with dialogue involving Mary Jane's lovely family, make the former message all the more powerful. As a white Northerner, I can say honestly that many of Dorothy Sterling's subtle points presented me with the full impact of segregation's effects (which I abhor.) There is no question that Mary Jane (child of a prosperous lawyer, granddaughter of a professor, and living five blocks from the school) is hated entirely because of her race - no elements of class distinction and the like. The violent protestors on the school's steps somehow shocked me less (since hate-mongers always have some reason to "protest") than Sally's parents being special because they encouraged integration as obedience to the Supreme Court (rather than because segregation was an outrage), and actually were polite to Negroes (how expansive of them! even if their daughter cannot visit her closest friend's home.) The themes are easily accessible for the young reader because the book is not written with hatred or bitterness - merely a presentation of the facts that makes them especially vivid. Mrs Sterling wisely does not add other issues to the theme, which would only take away from the underlying truth that she manages to present in a vivid, entertaining, and engrossing style. Mary Jane has been a good friend of this reader's for over thirty years.

Highly Reccomened
"Mary Jane Harper Cried Last Night" is an excellent, descriptive, and unputdownable novel. Joanna Lee and T.S. Cook bring you into the world of an abusive mother of a three year old girl, who wants peace and quiet and ends up with too much of it.

One of the most insightful books ever written.
Many would say that Mary Parker Follett was ahead of her time. I think that perhaps she was just in time, but the Progressive Era was rudely interrupted by a Depression, a world war, and then a complacent and insular 1950's. Even today, with the themes of this book as fresh as ever, the reader will find her arguments challenging yet undeniable. This book is not just about democracy and politics and community. It is about nothing less than conscious evolution. Follett turns conventional notions of politics and group process upside down, and she has no qualms about redefining terms that we take for granted, in ways that are simply this: empowering. Follett's sometimes poetic expression and passionate articulation, and her common-sense approach, will make this book enjoyable for any reader. And it is backed up by just enough intellectual argument to satisfy the social scientist. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the issues at the forefront of our public conversation today: community, communication, civic participation, neighborhood, political reform, diversity and equality. It is a landmark for 1998 as much as when it came out eighty years ago, if not more so.

Get ready to laugh!
Here is a histarical book about a chicken who dreams of being a famous ballerina and puts herself in danger of a wolf just for her one big chance. My daughter, and mother and I were all just roaring with laughter. My mother can do a wonderful southern accent and applied it to Poulette's voice. It was great! This book is great to do voices with for the different charectors! You're child will LOVE it! My daughter brought this book home from the school library and we got such a huge kick out of it we have told lots of people about it. I just had to buy a copy for my family! It is a "must-have"! You won't be dissappointed! A great one to read to your elementary children's class room! Nice easy reading that isn't too long before bed time too! :)

A chuckle for eveyone!
Penrod is a most lovable character. In the five short tales that make up this title, the reader relates to the simple ideals of a young Penrod and his older, wiser friend, Griswold. The two are quite a pair as Griswold tries to help Penrod through some common dilemas. When trying to find pants "just like the ones Grandma sent", a child will relate to Penrod's idea of an identical match and Griswold's exasperation in helping him find it. Common courtesy is not always easy, and Penrod has a comical way of being courteous and still getting the last cookie! Children as well as adults will get a chuckle out of these 'life lessons' geared to the young readers. This is a great book to read at storytime, as an animated oral presentation brings it to life!! My kindergartners loved it!!

Creative Techniques Inspire Projects with Depth
Although this book is touted as a book that helps teachers assign student projects that enhance self esteem, it is much more! It promotes the use of a creative thinking technique known as analogical or metaphorical thinking. The teachers I know who have used this book say it actually teaches their children to be more creative and produce projects / products that have a great deal of depth. The combination of art, writing, and introspection is very unique. A must-have for the writing, art, or enrichment program teacher!

A fresh insight on old faces
Halsman offers more than the standard potrait photography we have grown accustomed to. He offers a fresh perspective to faces we have seen countless times, by offering us an intimate look into thier lives. For instance, how many people would think to photograph Monroe pumping iron, or Richard Nixon jumping up and down like a little boy. It is this inginuity that allows the audience to appreciate a different side to these celebrities. I am a longtime fan of Halsman's work, and i would strongly recommend that anyone intersted in the stars of the 50's -70's to get this book. You will appreciate seeing them in a new light.

The Porcupine Mouse by Will Herman
This book is a story about 2 mice. They are sent away by Mama Mouse to find a new house. The reason they had to find a new house for themselves is because they were the oldest 2 mice in the house and it was so crowded to begin with. Dan and Louie are scared of owls and cats, because they eat mice. They venture out and when they see a dark shadow swoop down from the trees the run to hide when they accidently bump into a new house. They walk in and notice its perfect so they stay there.
Dan and Louie end up having an arguement on how to decorate the house and they don't speak to each other until Louie runs out to get a bag of pine-cones and a cat is about to eat him. Dan tells the cat that Louie is really a porcupine and his spines were in the bag. The cat puts his hand in the bag and runs away and then he never comes back and they live happily ever after. I recommend this book because the illustrations are phenominal and it has a very good moral.
