Would you want to hypnatize a dog to think he's a cat?
This book is very interesting. At least if you think hypnotizing a dog to think he's a cat is interesting. In this book three boys decide to hypnotize a dog to think he's a cat for their science project. I recommend this book.

This is a disgrace to all books!
This is a disgrace to all books everywhere because it simply sucks altogether! It reminds me of the book The Puppy Who Lost His Way by Chris E. Taylor because it has a boy who gives up easily. The boy in The Puppy Who Lost His Way gave up looking for Happy after an hour. He didn't put up posters or anything and he just sat on the porch like a goon and waited. So did the boy in this book. This book has a boy "society" who becomes a third grade science project. If you don't get any of this at all, you should watch Billy Madison (the movie) immediately. That's all I have to say about that.

A terrific, laugh-out-loud science fair starter!
In a time when we sometimes take ourselves too seriously, I Was A Third Grade Science Project comes to the rescue! Before you start this year's science fair project, you've got to read this! No more fizzled volcanoes or boring bean plants, this one will get your creative ideas popping and give you a few hours of rolling-on-the-floor laughter!

good literary anthology
This is an excellent collection of literary selections about grieving. I was given this book and one other (Dying: A Book of Comfort, ed. Pat McNees) when my mother died. I couldn't read anything very long -- couldn't concentrate -- so it was helpful to have these books with short passages on what I was going through.

The best "mourning anthology" I've seen
Wide-ranging, well-chosen short works (mostly poems, some chapters and essays) on death and grieving. I particularly liked how it was divided into "seasons" of grieving, so I could pick a section depending on how I was feeling in my bereavement that particular day (e.g., "Winter" is divided into Shock, Idealization and Anger, Sing Sorrow, Consolations, etc; "Summer/Fall" have Memory, Dreaming the Dead, Grief's Wisdom, etc). There are individual sections on Mourning the Loss of a Child and The Grief of Children.

I have had my own losses and grief work in the past, and now work with the dying. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to families and friends. This is the one to go to to get some solace, find something for the eulogy, have a poem for the memorial service, or just find a like mind months and years after the loss. This is it.

Profoundly conceived, moving and helpful
This wonderful anthology is for anyone who loves poetry, but can be a miracle for those who both love poems and who find themselves in grief. It is so simply and intelligently organized, into sections that approximate stages following the loss of one who is loved, with selections of poetry ranging from classic Chinese poets Mei Sheng and Fu I, whose first century B.C. verse hit my sensibilities as strongly as Anne Sexton's, to the incredible unvarnished strength of several Edna St. Vincent Millay poems, that forced me to see that poet in a different light. Each section can be read as its own anthology.

I salute Mary Jane Moffat for this wonderful volume and commend it to everyone. It grew from the author's personal loss, and its careful selections and great strength reflect this. For me, facing the greatest loss I could ever imagine, it was a great gift, the only writing that matterred to me for months. The volume closes with the wonderful "Dear Men and Women" of John Hall Wheelock. Please read it all!

A Real Page Turner!
I loved this book and thought it very entertaining. Not only is this a captivating ghost story - it contains mystery, unrequited love, and compassion between friends. I loved Ms. Denison's use of history in telling Stella's story. I couldn't wait to turn the page to find out what would happen next. If you like a good read - I highly recommend this book to you.

Wow I loved it!
Stella's Search" is a ghost story without the horror and fear that we often associate with that genre. Instead, it tells of a present day deputy sheriff, divorced and determined to make a new life for himself. But there's a very cantankerous ghost in the barn. The only way to get rid of her is to help her solve her problem--find the buried box which has the information that will exhonerate the man she loves. Except that the box contains more than she ever wanted to know. Other elements of the story include a murder, someone leaving town with the money and the journey west in a covered wagon in time for the California gold rush. A great story! It held me every bit of the way.

Ghostly fun read!
Unlike a lot of ghost stories, Stella's Search is plump with American history. A tale of westward momentum, fevered by the California Gold Rush is told through the eyes of Stella, who lingers in between worlds in order to prove the integrity of the man she loves. The author's choice of flavorful characters combined with an obvious devotion to research makes for a story that will haunt your heart as well as your imagination. Although I am not normally a historical fiction reader, this novel was both story and history. It entertains while teaching and made me want to learn more about the people who moved to California and its effect on the families who survived the wagon trails.

Verdi: A Biography

Viva Verdi in this magisterial and definitive tome!
Viva Verdi is the opera lover's response to this magisterial work by Phillips-Matz. Her years of research has produced a detailed life of Verd. The author traces the family lineage of Verdi in Bussetto, chronicles the genesis of his operatic masterpieces and delves into the private life of the greatest Italian opera composer of the nineteenth century.
I dove into this huge book during Christmas 2002. The book will immerse you in the life of the complicated composer detailing his relationships, his tragedies and triumphs. The book
is essential to anyone interested in knowing more about Verdi and his times. The book is not easy reading but is worthwhile for the time it takes to peruse it. Viva Phillips-Matz on a superb biography!

What else would you need to know?
I have just finished reading this book. It was my intention to get the bits and pieces I have been taught over the years about Verdi together in order to teach a short course on him in January 2000. It has done so much more. If you're looking for a book that details the opera plots and offers translations of the librettos, this isn't it. But if you're looking for a great summary of what we know about this truly great man, his friends and enemies, his work habits, his interests in farming and charity, the gestation and difficult birth of his operas and other words -- and what we *don't* know, things that might still be discovered -- you've come to the right place. It has NEVER taken me so long to read a book because the pages are so densely detailed. That being said, I am very glad that I did. VERY glad. Here is a hero for the ages, pace his operas.

The definitive biography of Verdi
I can't imagine a more complete collection of information about Verdi's long and productive life. Phillips-Matz captures the feeling of mid-century Italy and among other things she shows how Verdi became a hero in the movement culminating in Italian statehood. Viva Verdi!

exciting simple look at the environmental vs. industry issue
The last time Denver-based environmental lawyer Lauren Van Horn came to her hometown San Rafael, Utah, she caused a riot with her protectionism views on the local wilderness. Now her sister Rebecca Hewitt asks her to return to help her with her former husband Joe. He claims Becca is an unfit mother due to her affair with oil magnate Gabe Randolph. Becca denies any relationship beyond friendship with the man, but wants Laura to have a pretend affair with Gabe to fool Joe. Laura's employer, the not-for-profit Colorado Plateau Wilderness Association, also sends her to San Rafael to represent them in a local environmental dispute.

Laura feels attracted to Gabe, but he heads the oil company wanting to drill in the canyon, something that she objects to as being destructive. Becca's request that she and Gabe pretend to have a romance makes her feel uneasy, but soon she and Gabe fall in love while seeking a compromise to balance employment and saving the wilderness. However, their respective supporters escalate the argument placing innocent people in danger and their relationship at risk.

Though an exhilarating look at the complex environmental vs. industry issue, the story line offers simplified solutions. The plot also uses an illogical assumption to push the intelligent lead pair together. Laura and Gabe are a superb duet, who serves as the microcosm of the bigger issue. The well-written tale is exciting and brings a strong perspective to the prime debate. Mary Jane Meier has written an insightful novel, but HOMETOWN GIRL has several sidebars that take the reader away from the key theme. Breeze through them in order to read a superb novel.

Wonderfully rich, heartwarming romance!
I really love the way this author tells a story. She has a deceptively simple style...The plot rolls along easily and it pulls you in, but there is such substance to the relationships that are being formed. I really enjoyed this book, and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a romance novel with likeable characters and a lot of heart! Recommend highly!

Very highly recommended
When successful lawyer Lauren Van Horn returns to her hometown of San Rafael, Utah, passions threaten the peace of the small community. Lauren represents the environmentalists, the tree huggers that save endangered lands and animals. The people of San Rafael resent people like Lauren because their fragile economy depends on its environmental resources. When her environmental comments got in her in trouble with the town folk several months ago, Lauren vows to stay silent this time and attend her family concerns instead. Unfortunately, circumstances take that decision out of her hands.

Lauren's sister Becca has asked her to come home to help with a custody issue. Becca's ex-husband Joe threatens to use her romantic interest Gabe Randolph in another man as the means to gain custody of their seven-year-old daughter. When he moved back to town and Becca was single again, they thought they'd see if they pick up where they left off in high school. Unfortunately, small town gossip created jealousy in Joe. Now Becca wants Lauren to become publicly involved with Gabe to take the heat off herself, wisely deciding to try to avoid courts in the custody issue.

Gabe is now an oil producer whose company hopes to tap San Rafael's resources. The town wants the jobs and economic boost such a venture provides. Lauren, however, worries for the delicate desert landscape and protests the venture based on environmental issues. With such vast difference of values, maintaining a romantic interest becomes challenging. Her heart knows no barriers, either, making the situation even more volatile. Add protesters who aren't afraid to resort to sabotage to accomplish their ends, a meddling mother, and a demanding boss, and Lauren finds herself confronted with challenges on all fronts.

Author Mary Jane Meier's HOMETOWN GIRL is contemporary romance at its finest. With a solid understanding of the dynamics of custody battles and environmental issues, Meier creates a novel rich in nuance and flavor. Not only do the primary characters sparkle, but the supporting cast also comes alive, making the small town of San Rafael a believable, richly diverse background. Indeed, even the simplest characters, such Ezra the retired cook who's blindness doesn't make the picture of his beloved Chloe any less vivid, threaten to bring a tear to the reader's eye. Very highly recommended.

Comprehensive and informative...
A very good coffee-table book about the Olympic Games. Excellent photography, text, and results of all the Olympic Games.

If you're looking for one book to have in your collection, this is an excellent choice. I hope there will be an update in the future!

For Olympics buffs
A real compendium of information for the armchair buff or visiting Olympics spectator. Each Olympic games, both summer and winter is covered. It is lavishly illustrated - the stories are told via the pictures which are all well-captioned.

As well, there is a comprehensive list of results (Gold Silver and Bronze medal winners) for every event in every games.

This is the definitive Olympics compendium and I thoroughly recommend it.

The reference i was looking for
A great book for anybody looking to get a reference for the olympic games. Long time back i was looking for the same but i got nothing, now " The Olympic Games " gave me the chance. The result of all competitions in the entire summer and winter olympics really comprehensive, text and pictures were useful and enjoyable. I feel no sorry that i got this reference.

Complete Diabetic Cookbook
By Finsand, Caldwell, and White - This book has thousands of recipes and they are good. I don't think I will ever grow tired of using it. However, if you or someone you are cooking for has just recently been diagnosed with diabetes, this is not the book to get you started. It does have useful charts, but it has very little educational material about the disease. I would recommend this book as a companion to a book with comprehensive information about diabetes. I think the most prominent chart in the book deals with sugar substitutes. (The Simply Gourmet Diabetes Cookbook by Mary Donkersloot is a great place to get started. With this book and the book you are reading about, youu will never lack in information and choices.)

Personally, I would prefer less recipes about desserts. There are hundreds and hundreds of these recipes. I've never really craved daily deserts or sweetened foods. After spending time in the hospital, and meeting other diabetics, this may be exactly what you need, though. Some people do eat sweet dishes frequently. I plan to use these recipies in cooking for my aging parents and myself, in order to provide things that we can all eat. I doubt I will use more than a portion of this book in my own home.

Better than most 'Regular' Cookbooks
One would not know that these recipes were designed for a diabetic, until they looked at some of the ingredients. These are tasty, flavorful, and creative recipes for the whole family, designed to lower the sugar/carbohydrate intake grams for diabetics. The recipes are simple, and made with the 'usual' ingredients with the exception of the sugar substitutes. And, there are handy conversion charts that show how to convert 'sugars' to sugar substitutes.

Anyone will enjoy the foods that they make from these recipe's. This is truly a 'gourmet' cookbook, with literally thousands of recipes for everyday living. There are entree and side dish recipe's, but my favorite section are the hundreds of 'dessert' recipes. You have to try those Cream Puffs!

Good book describing the entire history of Monona Terrace
Mollenhoff and Hamilton have done a great job doing research for this book. The background on how Monona Terrace came to be is fascinating. The people and relationships important in Madison's architecture and politics eventually get discussed in this book. About the only thing you could possibly criticize is the rehash of FLLW biography which doesn't need to appear here. This is a minor criticism, as I realize that for some readers this may be the only FLLW book they own.

Splendid Contribution to Wright Literature
The story of Monona Terrace, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and updated by Taliesin Architects (led by Wright apprentice Tony Puttnam) to conform to current code and requirements, here receives the sensitive and perceptive treatment it deserves. The book's many excellent features include clear and graceful writing, beautiful illustrations integrated aptly into the text, and balanced consideration of controversial subjects. The authors' account of the life of Frank Lloyd Wright and their treatment of the political history of Madison provide the context that make the Monona Terrace story so fascinating. This is a valuable book indeed.

Complete - great for newcomers and transplantees
I bought this book from Amazon.com before moving to the DC area, and I must say, it has been quite helpful. The information (hours, phone numbers) is still current, and it covers a variety of issues. Whether you're looking for kids' activities of trendy night spots, this book has it all.

If you are moving to the area, and will be without an extended support network initially, I'd recommend buying this book, to provide you with new ideas, and to fill you in on life in general here.

Some drawbacks. The authors definitely love this area; that's great, but I feel they are too optimistic on their neighborhood descriptions. Reading this book, you'd think all of DC and the surrounding areas were safe to live in, but the reality is the opposite. Sometimes they are a bit too "PC" in their descriptions, and this takes away from reality. Additionally, sometimes things are difficult to find in the index.

Overall though, a great buy!

Excellent and Informative
A must for anyone interested in learning more about the area or are planning a visit. Well written, informative and interesting. My highest recommendation!

There are better books on this subject.
I tried recipes from this book and they are awefull. Funky combinations that do not work. Some of the recipes are very basic and may appeal to people who do not like exotic or fancy food. For better recipes and recipes that offer more variety, flavor and flair, I like the American Diabetes Association Diabets Cookbook and Joslin's Diabetic Gourmet Cookbook.

Used it for years
I bought the first edition of this book in the early eighties to use the recipe exchanges along with "Eat and Stay Slim" by Better Homes and Gardens. I still use it to this day and whenever I serve meatloaf or chicken a la king from it I get compliments and folks want the recipes! Many of the recipes are easy to make and the kids love them.

A MUST FOR ANYONE COOKING FOR A DIABETIC
This book provides such a wealth of information to anyone who is new to the world of a diabetic. It answered so many questions that I had and didn't know where to go for the answers.

With all the new products on the market, this updated version takes the pain out of grocery shopping in the supermarket skills section.

I bought three copies....One for my mom, one for a friend and one for myself and we all agree...Bon Appetit!
