Easy to read & covers all bases
I loved this book!!! It's very easy to read...as if the writer's talking to you as a friend, face to face. It starts with how to become Born Again/Saved and covers the 'basics' of Christianity (including how the Bible was inspired by God, how to pray, etc.), yet helps you to understand the difference between being religious and having a spiritual, intimate relationship with God. I'd recommend this book for people wanting to know more about Christianity, those who are new Christians, and even those who have been Christians for awhile, but felt something was missing (I was in this category). I'm giving copies to family members who aren't saved and are struggling with their own spirituality...it's a keeper!

Refreshing Book, Insightful Message
This book will really affect its readers -- it is digestible, yet deals with a profound subject. It captures the person who wants to develop his/her spirituality, rather than his/her religion. Reads as though it is from the reader's own mind, unraveling misconceptions, working through doubts, etc. Refreshing!

Which is more alien-a mad extraterrestrial, or a bureaucrat?
By the author of the Sector General series, this book details the arrival of a mysterious alien starship that takes up a solar orbit near that of Mars. Two Apollo-class Earthships carrying a total of six astronauts are launched to begin an investigation - only to be mindlessly attacked again and again by the varied and strange beings aboard the vessel - until one man figures out what these beings are - and where the crew actually is.

Matters are not improved with Earth's "help", since the gov't is far more concerned with their managing the _perception_ of what is going on than they are in find out what _is_ going on.

should be read by all public accountants and investors
This book will help to breed healthy skepticism. 2002 was a defining year for modern business crimes, or at least reported business crimes, and this book provides a succinct and clear review of the highflying companies, the colorful players, their notorious crimes, and the pertinent issues. I finally understand how Enron schemed and ImClone conned. The editor has selected some of the best reports of each crime, crimes where greed and vice, instead of virtue, were rewarded, and he has brought each story up to date with unfolding news. In Part One, Surowiecki selected stories about the corporate hucksters, conmen, CEOs, visionaries, and villains, from the Washington Post, Vanity Fair, Forbes, The New York Times, The LA Times, The WSJ, and even The Edmonton Journal. The stories illuminate the events at Enron, WorldCom, ImClone, CriticalPath, Quest, Tyco, and Adelphia. The Edmonton Journal's story on WorldCom's Bernie Ebbers is among the best I read. No Mississippi paper would touch that profile. You might never read a business press puff piece about a CEO, or trust a devoutly religious or visionary CEO the same way again. In Part Two, the stories focus on "Who Watches the Watchmen?" Stories from The New Yorker, The New York Times, BW, USBanker, and The WSJ highlight the SEC and NY Attorney General Elliot Spitzer, and the corruptions of Wall Street analysts, "independent knowers," and at the self regulating Big Five accounting firms, especially Andersen Worldwide. The profile of Jack Grubman, a disgraced telecom analyst who lacked objectivity is a delight to read. In Part Three, the selected stories concern "What Went Wrong, and How Do We Fix It?" Stories from the WSJ, Business 2.0, Slate, Bloomberg, Fortune, The Weekly Standard, and The Atlantic Monthly investigate whether corruption is an always a byproduct of bull market bubbles, whether stock options lead to the rewarding of bad behavior, and whether greedy investors themselves are to blame for what befalls them.

A wonderful survey of American culture
I read this book in Dr. Carlson's class about 7 years ago, and although I liked the book very much at the time, I didn't fully appreciate the book. Since then, I have thought about the book and its implications often. There are very few books I can say actually changed my views of the world and culture, but this book is one of them. It is an excellent blend of the highs and lows of modern American culture. I highly recommend this book.

A Good Learning Tool
Bringing Back the White Pine is a good learning tool in a couple of ways. The first half of the book covers a lot of history involved with the settling of northern Minnesota. The second part becomes more technical and describes how the author has worked at the regeneration of white pine. All of this information is very useful to anyone who currently has white pine trees or seedlings, as well as those who wish to plant.

Wonderful survey of worship within the Christian tradition
The book is basically on about Christian Worship and the various elements of it. This book was used in a Master level class on the History of Christian Worship at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. James White is the Professor of Liturgy at the University of Notre Dame. He's the author of many books including Protestant Worship: Traditions in Transition.

The book is really wonderful. It first begins with the teaching of Christian Worship (mostly by surveying the various families and tradition of Christian worship, major figures and developments in Christian worship, and the need for liturgical pedagogy, that is, the teaching of what the various elements are within liturgy). White surveys some of the forms of how the message of Christianity of Christianity is transmitted, for instance, that the Christian Year and the various elements within it can teach the Christian message (e.g., Time as Communication). Then he gives various analyses on architectures and how these can communicate things about God and the Christian message -- "Space as Communication". There are some great pictures (or rather, photographs and architectural diagrams) which visually show this. For instance, Gothic cathedrals draw one's attention upward, giving a sense of God's transcendance. Or Puritan meeting houses are plain and white (symbolizing God's holiness), drawing people attention that the church is really the People of God. And so on. There are many beautiful pictures of churches and White draws out elements that we normally see but don't think much about, for instance, the high pulpit. Then White moves on to Daily Public Prayer and the services of prayers (including sample prayers), the service of the Word (within the tradition of the church and how it developed especially in Protestantism), sacraments in general, Christian Initiation, the Eucharist, and Occasional Services.

All in all, White mentions a number of crucial authors and critical teachers (Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, Eusebius, etc.) who made contributions and includes their writings as points of reference to indicate how the service of worship was changing/evolving. This was a really nice book to survey Christian worship and get a good understanding of not only the formal elements, but many of the artistic/visual/etc. elements that affect worship.

The Edge of Writing
James Boyd White has crafted another excellent exploration of the intersections of writing, law, culture, and society. A must read for those interested both in the art of writing well and in enhancing the ability to understand the various meanings contained in specific texts. While his specific areas of interest are Classical Studies and Law, the precise methods he uses apply to writers everywhere. Want to give an edge to your writing? Then read, "The Edge of Meaning."
