Playing With The Prince Of Puke
This is the book that piqued my intrest in John Waters over ten years ago before I could even be called a teenager.

For a man with such a reputation for being "filthy, perverse, trashy, etc., etc., etc.", this book ggives the reader a delightful gllimpse into his bouyant and often child like mind. Whether raving over meeting with Pia Zadora, listing the events of a truly hellish day, or giving a guided tour of Los Angeles as only he can, he guides the reader along in a cheerful skip, full of bounce and frolick.

Even for one who's unfamiliar with his films, this book is a light, quick read sure to entertain and provide laughs, crating a vivid and lovable image of the man known to so many as "The Prince Of Puke"

Walking on Waters
I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me. Take a look at ..... site regarding the first chapter of Crackpot. It is as wild as the book. Many of the links are gone, but many are still there. Loved this book.

Memorabilia
This collection of essays is one of the most compulsively readable, and re-readable, books I have ever owned. I was drawn to it, as you might expect, by my enjoyment of Waters' camp classics. But to be honest, I enjoy Waters the essayist at least as much, if not more, than Waters the filmmaker. Waters' films, and particularly Pecker, Serial Mom, and Hairspray, set the scene for the miscellany of obsessions which animate this book. Crackpot offers a comforting way to understand Waters' recent turn to a more conventional cinematic venue: these films are *also* celebrations of his passionate likes (and dislikes).

Waters writes a witty and acerbic prose, which conveys genuine passion for his obsessions, obsessions which include trials, the National Enquirer, Woody Allen's Interiors, dangerous candy, menthol cigarettes, and Christmas. His preferred methods seem to be the catalogue and the reminiscence: Waters' list of 101 things he hates, and 101 things he loves, are obsessive ruminations on the everyday, and Waters' methodical survey of his everyday touches gives new meaning to the sublime *and* the ridiculous. Most memorable to me, perhaps, is his LA Tour, a pre-OJ intinerary of murder, mayhem, and showbiz, and his loving tribute to the Enquirer. But his celebration of William Castle, or shame-faced coming out as a fan of avant garde, his ritualistic account of Christmas and his loving descriptions of his interests, home, and personal history all make for a case study of obsession that feels both candid and arch, in Waters' inimitable, and paradoxical way. If you read it once, you're going to read it again.

Awesome
I loved this novel for many reasons. One is that I have met and worked for Charles Evans and another is the fact that the writing is fluid and weel done. john waters did a good job of captruing the personality of Charles and the way he acts. I'm just glad I had the chance to read this nove;l.

Wow, and this is a true story!
As in all things, there is "one bad apple that spoils the whole bunch." That is a way to view the CIA and other branches of our government. There is always someone or something that is rotten.

John Waters does a fine job of presenting the story of Juan Rubio. Charles Evans is such an all-round great character. We are able to view a human side to these characters.

Now we wait with anticipation the sequel. Please, John, let there be a sequel!

Intense...riviting...outstanding work.
Scarily shocking, true-to life documentary of the widespread, unchecked corruption of our Government. Makes you think our liberties in a whole new light. Am I really free? John Waters and Charles Evans have risked their lives in exposing a woven tale of deceit and lies so that others can be freed from the long arm of tyranny and injustice. You both deserve a heros welcome and thank you!

Invaluable!
I'm hesitant to leave a review because some of the locations listed in this book are still peaceful and unknown, but this book is so invaluable when hunting for a good paddle spot that I felt compelled to sing it's praises....as long as it's just canoers who purchase this great book and not power boaters! The directions are easy to follow and accurate. The camping information is extremely important when traveling with children, like we do.The lay out of the book is perfect in helping to select drive times and specific locations. I came back to Amazon to purchase the book for a friend but see that it is out of stock. Hopefully this is just temporary. If not, buy it used!!

Excellent Book that will be used over and over again
Coale goes into just enough details so that you get a feel for the area and its surroundings. He also gives suggestions for where to camp. There are advisories for a variety of items: seasonal accessibility, powerboats, potable water, overcrowding, campground closures, etc. Each lake description also comes with high quality images and a map. The images are very impressive. I don't see any bylines for the photographs, so I'm assuming they were taken by Coale. In the back of the book there is a spreadsheet of all the lakes with the following columns: Natural Lake, Paddle-In Camping, Lakeside Camping, Winter Access, Long distance Paddling, No Motors/Speed Limits, Exquisite Beauty. I have no complaints about CTCH and I think it will be very helpful in designing some 4 day trips this summer. I give the book 5 stars ***** :)

the book is beautfully done.
dear john coale-congradulation on creating a book that anyone not even interested in paddling would enjoy. the pictures are breathtaking and succeed in capturing the feelings of the moment, such beautiful scenery. i wish your book great success. sincerly, lia medina, mill valley

One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure!
What a treat it is to read three screenplays written by the great director, John Waters. "Pink Flamingos" proved that a cult classic could be created on an extremely limited budget. The actors were uniquely talented and the characters they portrayed unforgettable. Now that the demented dialog they spoke is on the printed page, one can savor every word. I particularly enjoyed the pledges of undying love spoken by Raymond and Connie Marble.

CONNIE: "Oh, I love you Raymond! I love you more than anything in the whole world. I love you even more than my own filthiness, more than my hair color. Oh God, I love you more than the sound of bones breaking, the sound of the death rattle..."

RAYMOND: "And I, Connie, also love you more than anything I could imagine - more than my hair color, more than the sound of babies crying, dogs dying, even more than the thought of original sin itself. I am yours, Connie, eternally united to you through an invisible cord of finely woven filth that even God Himself could never, ever break."

"Desperate Living" is a modern day fairy tale in which an obese maid accidentally kills the husband of the neurotic socialite she works for. Rather than face a trial and possible prison time, they escape to a bizarre village in the forest known as Mortville. In the book, John Waters vividly describes the place and its residents. "Everything is made out of trash and garbage, including the houses. Hideous bums, perverts and psychopaths walk the street as...leather-clad Goons patrol the street harassing the pitiful citizens. In the distance we see a fairy-tale castle." Queen Carlotta is a ruthless monarch, living in opulent splendor while her squalid subjects starve. The power of the printed word was such that, immediately after reading that screenplay, I had to watch the movie again.

The real treasure in this trash trio is the screenplay for "Flamingos Forever," the never filmed sequel to "Pink Flamingos." The action takes place fifteen years after the end of the previous story. Babs Johnson, Crackers, Cotton and Edie the Egg Lady return to Baltimore as the Divine leaders of a filth cult. The late Connie Marble's sister, Vera, is married to Wilbur Venninger, a necrophiliac who owns a funeral home. The Venningers kidnap young children and force them to drink, smoke and shoot heroin. Vera claims to be the filthiest person alive, and sees Babs Johnson as the biggest threat to her title. Vera Venninger's rivalry with, seeming victory over and ultimate defeat to Babs comprises the rest of the story. What a shame that most of the actors in the original movie had passed away by the time this was written, and the sequel will never be filmed.

A must for the trashoisie
Waters's early work is hilarious, and the book is a surprisingly good read despite the egregious absence of Waters's best flick, "Female Trouble."

Wow! All The Trashy Depravity My Sick Little Heart Desires!
Reading these screenplays was more fun than watching the movies, as I could picture the filth in a more vivid way than is possible to portray on Waters' low budget. The happenings in these plays are so utterly outrageous the sheer force of their sleazyness is more overwhelming than "art". What perverse genius! I am reduced to babblesome blandness beside it. I love it more than my own haircolor, the sound of dogs dying & of babies crying--more than my own filthyness even. Gush gush gush gush gush gush gush...

captivating!!
Anyone who is interested in taking up photography should have this book. There are many emotions "pictured" in this book, a wonderful and artful way for people to get in touch with themselves.

Fine Artistic Commitment
When a Photographer has done the hard work necessary to become a portraitist for many of our modern musicians, screen personalities and others of note there is always a danger that his or her work will lose its innovative drive. Greg Norman has managed to avoid this pitfall and has retained his ability to make deep, searing penetrations into the personae of his subjects. There is a natural intensity to Norman's work that often disguises the tremendous control he actually exerts over the process.

Greg Norman's career started as an amateur taking shots at rock'n'roll concerts. He went on to document the protest era, film work in Los Angeles and portraiture. Always showing a fine sense of the moment, his images breathe with life. He works almost entirely in black and white, creating strong, graphic prints.

I love the perfect contrast of a shot of the Barbi Twins, the incredible expression on a photo of Nina Hagen, the frequent glimpses of Keanu Reeves, and many, many others. "Inside Life" has about 175 beautifully printed photographs in it, and very little distracting text. There is a foreword by John Waters, an introduction by Dave Fulton, and a short afterthoughts section for reflections from some of his subjects.

"Inside Life" is a remarkable testimony to the work of one of America's notable photographers during the 90's. It has value as a source of inspiration for other photographers as well as being a beautiful coffee table book.

A great book
If you are thinking of buying this book because you are a Keanu Reeves fan, then go ahead and do so. It is definately worth it! It is a great quality book.

A Truly Remarkable Book
I have been blessed twice in my life with books that have changed the way I view the world. The first was "The Nature of Personal Reality" by Joan Roberts, and the second was "A Course In Miracles"- both channeled works. Now I hold the third in my hands. What a joy to find a challenge and a hand up to the next step in my spiritual evolution I knew from the beginning that it had already moved mountains inside my mind and opened up waterfalls. Peace, Betty Lee

"How to Get Ready for God."
Something compelled me to read the book so I finally located a copy at the Local Hero bookstore in Ojai. I was disappointed that at that time no other bookstore in this area was willing to stock it. I find the story teller Hinono a person I can identify with. He and his family's spiritual journey is full of wisdom and love that anyone would appreciate regardless of their religious faith. I wish to thank Barbara and John for putting this material together. I'm sure there is a story behind how this was done with Hinono your source person. I hope this book does get recognition it deserves.

An essential guide to be read repeatedly by any truth seeker
"For the Land of the Lost" is a story - charming, funny, insightful and intriguing - told by an ancient shaman, Hinono, who lived in the years following 636 BC. But more than a story, it is a revelation about the power of Love and a reminder that no matter how far we have come from remembering our connection to Creator, there is a way back.. Book I, "Fire," introduces Hinono's tale, taking him from his birth to his journey with his family to visit the ancient Hopi people, years away from his native land. Among the Hopi, Hinono and Shuinono, his wife, share the revelations and experiences of the Hopi, after which they return home, now with daughter Fiece. On their way back, the parents marvel at their infant daughter's certainty about life and at the deep spiritual connection she already shares with her mother and with Creator. Her badger medicine is obvious and soon to be made more evident in her communication with nature and with people in her tribe. Book II, "Earth," immerses the reader in the family's ancient tribal life, painting a tender picture of how conflicts were solved, fears addressed, and love was shared. Fiece becomes a central figure in helping the tribal council see through the fear that faces the tribe - the "big cold" expected somewhere in the near future. Book III, "Water," details the workings of our physical selves and expands on issues woven throughout the first two books - the healing of all relationships, particularly those between men and women; the barriers that keep us from returning to Love; and the opportunity set before us to escape from our perception into the reality of who we really are. Book IV, "Air," consists of short, charming creation stories by Great Mother Earth, told through the eyes and voices of her native creatures. "For the Land of the Lost" is a masterpiece created by a skillful artisan. It takes the reader on a mesmerizing journey through language (sometimes literary but often strikingly mundane); through time and space, with little regard for boundaries; but most definitely into that "within" space in each of us that desires to be known and brought to light. It is an invaluable guide to be read repeatedly throughout anyone's journey back into wholeness.

Excellent 'quick' insight to warm generous Turkish people.
I read this book 14 years ago and loaned it out to someone because it was so good that in parts I laughed out loud and at parts felt my heart in my throat nearly ready to cry. Although todays Turkey has changed considerably, the books description of the Turkish people remains valid. The short stories are ones anyone can relate to that has visited a foreign country for any extended time period. Read the book, go to Turkey or vice versa. Unless you are narrow minded and demand other countries to be as 'enlightened' as the US you'll appreciate all of what Turkey has to offer.

A gem! A must read for everyone, American or not !
When I met John D. (as his friends called him) at the Karamursel Air Force Base in 1964, he had already been in Turkey for 6 years and was quite familiar with Turkish way of life. Having studied Latin, French and German and taught speech at the University of Notre Dame, he learned Turkish quickly. His passion for archeology motivated him to travel extensively in Turkey and visit the many ancient Greek and Roman sites there. As a bachelor he engaged himself in night life where he met interesting people, experienced local customs and became an expert (Saki) in drinking RAKI. An empathetic character, John D. had the innate talent to get along with people. He was a perfect diplomat with a charming smile, intelligence, humility (rare in those days for an American in Turkey) and a scholarly knowledge about practically everything. As an expert bridge player with capacity to drink anyone under the table, he was very popular in social circles. My brief friendship with him ended in 1965 when I left Turkey for an assignment in Canada. As a Turk I loved the book. It was a joy to read it. Thanks to "Scotch and Holy Water" I learned more about ancient history, Greek and Roman mythology and places I have not yet visited in Turkey. My Scottish wife who has been to Turkey several times and is very knowledgeable about Turkish culture also loved it. John D's humor, wit and description of Turks and American alike were just hilarious. When I read about my former colleagues Yuksel Enginsu, Bertram Crane, Kemal Simsek and John Hicks, it evoked so many fond memories of my days in Turkey. More than anything else in this book, as in life, John D. illustrates his deep understanding and respect for Turks and their culture. Anyone who has any interest in or connection to Turkey should read his insightful book. I was deeply saddened to learn that John David Tumpane, a truly Renaissance Man, died in October 1997. Muharrem Sev (Istanbul native), still residing in Ottawa, Canada (Sep 3, 1999)

What a wonderful, wonderful book!
I first came across Scotch and Holy Water when I was a student in Alanya, Turkey, in 1994, and fell in love both with the country and the book. Unfortunately, the book belonged to someone else in the program, and I was never able to find a copy in the States until now. The stories inside are some of the funniest and warmest portrayls of a people you'll ever see, and Tumpane's wry (and self-deprecating) style of writing and living comes through on every page. If you have any interest in Turkey, read this book.

"Shock Value" is a wonderful read!

Even if you're not a fan of John Waters' films, I don't think you could put down this fascinating book once you've started reading it. It details the bizarre productions of several of his films as well as his own personal pasttimes and obsessions (which are almost always hilariously deviant). If you only read one entertainment book this year...here it is! I also strongly recommend Crackpot and Trash Trio (a collection of screenplays), also written by John Waters. Happy Reading--Jeremy Gentry

inspiration
I finished Shock Value only moments ago, and i feel like i should go to baltimore and fall on my knees worshipping Waters and the crew. i thought i was weird...This book focuses on the early years and has truly inspired me to raise myself above the boring muck of semiconformist existence. READ IT

John Waters rules
I read this book in its french translation "Provocation" and it's one of the best I've ever read in the genre. It's funny, clever, sincere. I'm a big fan of Big John's work but reading this, I've discovered he was not only the king of bad taste but also a very moving person who's faithful in friendship and in his ideas. I can only recommend this maserpiece to anybody who's open-minded and wants to discover one of the most brilliant filmmaker of his generation.

An engineer's review
The book was very useful. The only drawback was the "Hydronics Design Kit" was not included. This costs an additional $76 from Oikos.com and is referred to many times in the book. Therefore, it is almost a requirement during use of the book.

good stuff
this is an excellent book. i have an engineering background, and this book has the level of detail and scientific rigor i find useful. i am using it to design my own system.

Best Resource Available
This book is THE resource for any homeowner planning to install radiant floor heat. It is written as a textbook for HVAC students, but it serves equally well as a reference and informative design resource for the average homeowner. John Siegenthaler is recognized by his peers as one of the outstanding radiant heating engineers. I highly recommend this book.

Couldn't Put It Down
This is one of those books you find yourself reading into the wee hours of the morning. Definitely a fun read and nonstop action.

I gave it only four stars because a truly great book has interesting ideas in addition to an interesting plot. In truth, I would have given it 4.5 stars if that was an option.

Straley's books are all consistently fun to read. The earlier novels are more rich with Native American folklore. This one has an intricate plot that keeps twisting this way and that all of the way until the end.

Read this book now. You won't be sorry.

Local with a bias
I will start out declaring my bias: I lived in Sitka, Alaska for 7 years (now in Juneau for the past 3) and know John and the people of Sitka well. It is for this reason actually I thought I would share something, possibily of interest, with readers or potential readers of John's work.

It was quite obvious to me that John used his latest novel not only to entertain his readers, but to tip his hat to the people of Sitka who have provided him such good material and, more importantly, friendship over the past many years.

Many of the positive side characters and a few of the main ones in this latest novel are John's friends and neighbors. If not in total, at least enough to convey a "tip of the hat" from John to them. While this is not unique to this book or John as a writer, he references so many local people and in such a way that reading the book was like watching him shake hands and pat the backs of his fellow Sitkans.

I hope readers are able to pick up on this and that it allows them to feel perhaps even more immeresed in the Sitka by the Sea John describes so well.

Cold Water Burning
I've been a fan of Straley's books after visiting Sitka, which is where he lives. I have read them all and without question this is the best yet! I love an unpredictable book, Straley does well in this fashion.
