Time Is Short and the Water Rises
A heartwarming true story told the way it happened by the man who lived the event. Sometimes sad, other times humorous, always touching, a book to read over and over again. Conducting a massive animal rescue operation in the middle of a rain forest, John Walsh proved it could be done and in the process taught an unknown concept to the bushnegroes he worked with - That instead of thinking of the capybara or the tapirs as the next meal, it was not time for the animals to die. It was not right to kill them for food now. A book every animal lover should read.

A memorable book
I read this book as a teenager (some 20+ years ago) and it has always stuck with me. John Walsh describes, in great and interesting detail, life in the Amazon Rain Forest as lived by scientists who were sent there to rescue 10,000 animals that live in an area that is being turned in to a lake by the building of a dam. This book is gripping and helps the reader both understand the trials faced by the scientists as well as the urgency of their work in the face of the ever rising water. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys adventure reading. Now that I have a teenager of my own - I have ordered it for him!

Colourful & Precise
Comprehensively researched, this book provides a complete history of whaling in Alaska, from its inception to its demise. Whaling was an important part of American history, a unique part that is forever gone, and deserves examination, despite our present sentiments on the subject. Mr. Bockstoce's history is thorough and provides considerable detail, and delves into a wide range of issues, from economic factors to the impact on the Native population. Still, the book is more than history. What makes it fascinating reading are the anecdotes and personal glimpses into the lives of the people who were involved. Whatever else they were, they did not lack for courage and perseverance. It's their stories, funny, strange, gruesome, or just colorful, that make the lost ships and abandoned harbors and history come to life. Overall, an great read for anyone with an interest in a clear and concisely-written history that includes personalities as well as data.

An extremely well organized and interesting history.
This book is the best one I have read about the history of whaling. It gives the reader a perspective that others sometimes do not. It is well illustrated and gives you the feel that you are actually part of the history Mr. Bockstoce is presenting. You understand how and why the Arctic whaling industry thrived and finally met its demise.

A sweet tale of friendships and heros despite differences.
Bear and his motley group of friends take off on a raft to enjoy a quiet picnic on the water. Charming froggies oblivious to their irritating 'rrribbitting' want to join the picnic but the little raftful of partiers gently snub them. Soon the raft gets stuck on a sandbar and froggies come to a clever rescue, resulting in unexpected new friends. A wonderful allegory to children's own friendships. Should be reprinted.

Takes up where the field guides leave off
Field guides are great for helping you identify the bird you just scoped, but once you want to learn more about the birds you've been seeing the field guides aren't of much use. This book covers a limited number of birds, but the information provided is excellent. He covers the life history of the birds, including a season by season account of the typical year in the bird's life. Mating habits, habitat preferences, and threats to their enviroment are some of the topics covered. In general, there are 3-5 pages devoted to each species. The illustrations are black and white, but are well done.

Excellent World War II Atlantic Convoy Action
This is one of those rare cases where a person involved in the action was able to write about it in a historically-correct and action-packed manner. Capt. Waters, in this book published by the Naval Institute Press in Annapolis, covers in great detail a number of the Allied North Atlantic convoys which were under constant ferocious attack by German U-boat wolf packs in 1942/1943, and which resulted in initial heavy losses of American/British cargo ships, right on through 1943/1944 when the situation was reversed and German U-boat losses rose to such a substantial level that they were withdrawn from the area. Capt. Waters is quite thorough in describing all facets of the struggle: how convoys were put together, how they were to be protected by escorts, the shortage of escorts, the massive sinking of cargo ships, frustration in watching ships go down, which countries supplied what effort and so on. Capt. Waters provides interesting accounts of sinkings, rescues, prisoners, storm damage, people, a number of "little things" that keeps the account at a personal, exciting and imagistic level. - This book is quite good and worth "five stars." In addition, Capt. Waters gives us several "freebies" or appendices: one is on Ultra, another is on German U-boat aces, another is on the weapons used, another is convoy protection by aircraft. Highly recommended as fast moving, highly informative wartime narrative.

Once again, Jerome is fantastic.
John Jerome has, in recent years, become one of my favorite writers thanks to his elegant and straightforward prose style. I ordered "Blue Rooms" the moment I heard it was out, and I was not disappointed. This is a terrific book.

"Blue Rooms" is about a lifelong love affair with water. From playing in the muddy San Marcos river as a boy, to kayaking the cold waters of Canadian lakes as a grown man, it seems Jerome has always been fascinated by water. Most of the earth's surface, he points out, is water. So is most of the human body.

What strikes me most about this book is the way in which Jerome takes a personal obsession and makes it understandable to his readers. By the end of the book I could have sworn I had a lifelong love affair with water, too, even though I'm a mediocre swimmer who lives in hills far from any large water source. Really, this is a terrific book. Go out and buy it. You won't be sorry.

Carriage of Goods by Sea

Great book
There are many books available on shipping law and carriage of goods by sea, but this one explains the international treaties, causes of dispute, conflict of laws, and essential shipping documents and contracts in a way that would make it an ideal text book. The writer runs a college course in the UK and clearly has had time to develop his methodology for clear explanations.
