Sea life in poetry, from saliors viewpoint. Excellent
My favorite book about the sea in poetry from the ordinary seamans viewpoint not the officers. Many wonderful poems some of epic proportions. It is written using lots of seafaring lingo that may make it difficult to understand for some. The poetry is worth the struggle.

John O'Hara produces some of his best with the novella
Sermons and Soda Water consists of 3 novellas which involve the same person -- James Mallory. Mallory is thought to be the alter ego of O'Hara. The first story "The Girl on the Baggage Truck" is a story of the younger Mallory barely avoiding being pulled down by involvement with an aspiring actress. The second, my favorite, "Imagine Kissing Pete" is the story of a bad marriage which goes good. I'm surprised no one ever made a movie of this one. The final one is a story of Mallory's senior years. He meets up with an old friend he has gradually moved away from, mainly due to the friend's marriage to a woman no one likes. Mallory is surprised to discover that his friend genuinely loved his wife. These stories remain popular because, like Appointment in Samarra, they highlight O'Hara's ability with dialogue and the description.

Brilliant Historical Research that Reads like Fiction
I guess I may be a little biased because I was one of the primary sources for the book, but with some very minor issues, it is the most accurate re-telling of a story that should have been turned into a film. If you want to read a GREAT legal story that is also a true story, this is an excellent read. Oh yeah, it also has the obligatory beautiful photographs of Mono lake. Seems that lake doesn't know how to take a bad photograph! :-)

If you want a natural-looking pond or stream . . .
Don't waste money on multiple lesser books. Buy this one! You won't regret it. Especially if you want a natural look, such as plants to the edge of the water or easing into the water. This is my key reference for constructing my water garden. Excellent construction techniques for natural edges - no necklace of rocks - and stream flow and finishing to mimic natural creeks and streams. Very inspirational photos of water features that will surprise you that they are man-made, and sized for average gardens as well as larger acreages. Line drawings detail construction techniques showing placement of liner, underlayment and structural (concrete) support for heavy rocks, etc. Several options shown for each. Written such that homeowner could do it themselves. Only caveat is that the designs are based in Britain and may (or may not) need adjustment for severe winter regions. Although primarily a construction guide, excellent photos of completed gardens provide inspiration for plantings. There is a brief review of major species adapted to this sort of garden. I am looking forward to the new edition, due out in Fall 2002, which promises inclusion of some U.S. information. Don't accept less. Raise your expectations of what your water feature can look like. Buy this book.

A drop-dead gorgeous book
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. I wish they would have given details on the printing process for this book. I've never seen such vibrant, sharp, photographs in a book. They look almost as good as professionally done prints on photographic paper. As for the artistic merit of the photographs themselves, they are wonderful, something to get lost in.

A Better Understanding of the Coastal Environment
As one of the Open University Oceanography Series, this book offers an excellent introduction to the physical processes operating in the nearshore and immediate offshore environments of the coastal zone. With a particular emphasis on the relationship between process and form, this work covers essential ideas and practical applications for university level instructors and students interested in the coastal environment. The book material is straightforward, readable, and offers the opportunity to develop fundamental research questions at a variety of levels. Best of all, it's a well-organized work at an affordable price.

For enthusiasts of all ages!
The Young Fishing Enthusiast is an excellent teaching aid to novice fishermen of any age. Using lots and lots of excellent photographs to grab the reader's interest, this book covers all aspects of fishing--from history of fish, gear to use, knot tying, fly fishing vs. lure fishing, and bait lore. It has a decided earth-friendly slant to it with sections on catch-and-release fishing and "considerate fishing" (sharing the lakes and rivers with other enthusiasts and wildlife.) A wonderful overview for anyone just getting their feet wet, so to speak.
