Selected quotations
We start with the simple conception that an organizational decision is the execution of a choice made in terms of objectives from among a set of alternatives on the basis of available information. This leads to the examination of how orgnizational objectives are formed, how strategies are evolved, and how decisions are reached within those strategies." (Pg 19)

Major subtheories for a behavioral theory of the firm: theories of organizational goals, org expectations, org choice and org. control.

Conception of organization: "It is a coalition of individuals, some of them organized into subcoalitions."... " any theory of organizational goals must deal succesfully with the obvious potential for internal goal conflict inherent in a colalition of diverse individuals and groups" (Pg 27)

The goal formation process for a coalition:
1.- bargaining process by which the composition and general terms of the coalition are fixed
2.- the internal organizational proceses of control by which objectives are stabilized and elaborated
3.- the proecess of adjustement to esperience by which coalition agreements are altered in responseto environmental changes.

" We have argued that the goals of a business firm are a series of more or less independent constraints imposed on the organization through a process of bargaining among potential coalition members and elaborated over time in response to short time pressures. Goals arise in such a form because the firm is, in fact, a coalition of participants with disparate demands, changing foci of attention, and limited ability to attend to all organization problems simultaneously" (pg 43)

Cemeteries Reveal Stories About our Cultural Heritage
Cemeteries and Gravemarkers is the leading book on interpreting culture from cemeteries. The edited volume includes research by geographers, art historians, historians, folklorists, and anthropologists on various aspects of cemeteries and their gravestones in the United States. The volume encompasses the diversity of approaches to cemetery research from various disciplines, focusing on the cultural information to be obtained. The book is quite readable for the interested member of the public, but also suitable as a text for a university or college course and is a principal scholarly reference for researchers. The book is divided into four sections, including "Icon and Epitaph," "Origins and Influences," "Ethnicity and Regionalism," and "Business and Pleasure." In the first section we learn of the meaning of the icons or motifs on the gravestones of children, loggers in the Northwest, and other insightful discussions of imagery. For example, while it is common knowledge that lambs are a typical motif used for children's gravestones, an article by Ellen Synder provides an in-depth discussion with excellent illustrations of various images used in childrens' gravestones. In the second section, "Origins and Influences," we learn of the unusual folk traditions of cemeteries in the South by Gregory Jeane, as well as the splendid monuments in New Orleans cemeteries, in an informative article by Peggy McDowell. Perhaps the most important part of the book for anthropologists is section three, "Ethnicity and Regionalism." Here we have four articles that provide information on the diversity of cemeteries used by enslaved Africans, Native Americans, Mexican-Americans, and Anglo-Americans. These articles provide a solid basis for interpretations of culture from cemeteries. In the last part of the book, "Business and Pleasure," we are treated to an excellent summary of the growth of the "rural or garden cemetery movement" in the nineteenth century, with its elaborate gravestones and picturesque cemeteries. The editor, Richard Meyer, is to be commended for compiling such as diverse group of scholars for a conference that resulted in the present book. The book is well referenced, with excellent illustrations, and many insights to be found.

Master Craftsman
Charles James filled his designs with beauty and technical brilliance. He was an architect of fabric. His designs were as beautiful on the inside as they were on the outside. This book is a glimpse into his world of manipulating shape and form. My only regret is that is not longer. Enjoy!

This is a great war book.
I have read virtually every book I can find on warfare, and "Chrysanthemum in the Snow" definitely rates in my top ten. It is a story of an Army platoon fighting on the front lines during the latter stages of the Korean War. The author, James Hickey, does a fantastic job in developing the characters. The book is a lot more than just "blood and guts." The reader gets into the minds of the soldiers fighting the World War One-style trench warfare, and one can really sense the hopelessness and futility of their predicament. The main battle centers on the assault on Heartbreak Ridge. Do not let the title mislead you. It is not a typical title for a book about war, but by the end of the book, the reader will feel that there could be no other title for it. I heartily recommend this book.

The Civil War Letters of First Lieutenant James B. Thomas, Adjutant, 107th Pennsylvania Volunteers (Army of the Potomac Series)

Book Description
Published for the first time, this manuscript contains the descriptive letters of a perceptive Pennsylvanian who served throughout the war. The unit saw action in the Second Manassas Campaign, at Antietam, at Gettysburg and in other major battles fought by the Army of the Potomac. In 1863, it served in the famous First Corps and fought on Oak Ridge on July 1. The regiment, which later was assigned to the Fifth Corps, was actively engaged in the 1864-65 campaigning. Since the 107th never had a unit history published, these letters provide the first in-depth look at the 107th Pennsylvania. Richard Sauers labeled this set of letters as "some of the very best Civil War missives that I have ever read."

Best Book for Cat Owners and Cat Owners-To-Be
This book is filled with terrific information for all types of cat owners and cat owners-to-be. The information is detailed but still very simple to understand. The author presents various options of what to do with your cat if your cat takes ill and guides you as to when a visit to the vet is necessary. The best thing about this book is that if you are a new cat owner and you really have no idea what is "normal" for a cat's behavior, this book will calm your nerves. I recommend it to everyone who either owns a cat or is about to. It is filled with valuable information!
