A brief overlook at the Balkans
This is a well prepared, objective, non-academic "reader-friendly" book, in spite of being about one of the most complicated corners of the world (historically and politically) doesn't go deep and drawn in details so thats why I preferred to call it "reader friendly". Great Job.

Inspiring!
The story of Christo Kulichev is inspiring for people of any faith who have undergone persecution for their faith. It is particularly inspiring for those of the Christian faith, challenging every believer to consider the role of suffering in the life of faith. In the end, it left me asking the question "Will those who come behind me find me faithful?" Kulichev can answer that question in the affirmative. By God's grace, may more of us be able to do so also.

Dramatic Image from Balkan Peninsula
It is Nikos Economopoulos's drama, an excellent b/w scene performed by people from Balkan Peninsula, about their daily life, street, religion, at work, strike, etc.
Within the Balkan Peninsula, the borderline between countries is so blurred, where the mindset of people may be still not separable from their history. We can see uncountable traces of their history, where their struggle continues today.
In the beginning, I was attracted by the cover image, like a monster with children. The strong visuals are so dramatic, across the contenients of countries with no border.

A series of solid, careful, scholarly studies
Compiled and edited by Maya Shatzmiller (Professor, Department of History, University of Western Ontario), Islam And Bosnia: Conflict Resolution And Foreign Policy In Multi-Ethnic States provides the reader with a series of solid, careful, scholarly studies on the causes of the Bosnian war. Supporting the opinion that civil war lies in much more than "ancient hatreds", and describing how complex changes in culture eroded the fragile bonds that held together a multi-ethnic state under the dominance of Tito's implacable communist regime, Islam And Bosnia reveals a transformation in the nature of nationalism, from a secular oriented society to one emphasizing religion, ethnicity and territory. With its series of compelling and meticulous presentations, Islam And Bosnia is a highly recommended, informed and informative contribution to contemporary Islamic Studies and International Studies academic reference collections and reading lists.

A Unique Look at a Perplexing Conflict
In this unique and comprhensive book on the recent NATO intervention in Kosovo, William Buckley provides insight into one of the most violent and convulted conflicts of the Post-Cold War era. Buckley, as editor and contributing essayist, brings together over 67 pieces from world figures such as Slobodan Milosevic, Kofi Annan and Henry Kissinger to real life accounts from Kosovar Albanian refugees, a doctor from Medicins Sans Frontieres and Belgrade city dwellers who lived with the NATO bombing campaign to name a few. Without the usual dry theories about international conflicts and intervention, this book underscores the human experience in the Balkans as a whole and in Kosovo particularly. Indeed, the origins of ethnic conflict and religous differences in the region are seen explicitly in essays by soldiers, politicians and villagers alike. The nature of U.S. and NATO intervention is debated vigorously as well, dispelling many notions that Americans may hold about our involvment in the Kosovo crisis. Every viepoint is represented--some typical, some disturbing--but all a testament to the myriad of perceptions and an insight into the roles that history, nationalism, ethnicity and religion can play in modern conflict.

The Late Medieval Balkans
This is an excellent book. It is the second volume in a two-volume series, covering the history of the northern Balkan penninsula from approximately 500 A.D. to about 1500 A.D. For most non-specialists, the material will be almost completely unfamiliar. Fine's approach falls somewhere between a general survey and a technical treatise. Narrative history is emphasized over descriptive history, as befits a work covering unfamiliar matter. The topics are treated chronologically, and within a chronological period, are treated by area (i.e., Serbia, Bulgaria, Crotia, etc.) The subtitle (A Critical Survey from the Late Twelfth Centruy to the Ottoman Conquest) is a bit of a misnomer; the second half of the book is virtually a history of the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans and ends with the Balkans completely under Ottoman control. The research is extensive and the topic is treated comprehensively. First rate.

Man of Steel, Man of Lead
I hope the world will finally come to acknowledge that Albanian leader Comrade Hoxha was a true literary innovator as well as being at the cutting edge of political revoultion. Joseph Dzhugashvili acquired his name Stalin ' Man of Steel ' because of his freedom from stifling bourgeois prejudice about such petty matters as human rights and morality. Enver Hoxha applied the same philosophy to his prose style, scorning such outdated concepts as 'readability', 'clarity', 'coherence' and 'paragraphs'. 'Clunky', 'wooden', 'excruciatingly tedious' and 'intellectually threadbare' were compliments in his book. He wore them as badges of pride when ignorant western critics hurled them at him, just as he would later sneer at the same narrow-minded characterisation of his workers' paradise, People's Albania, as a 'Stalinist hellhole' and 'totalitarian nightmare'. At a party conference in Moscow in the early 1930s, Hoxha first tried out his new, groundbreaking style in an eleven-hour speech on the problems of pasteurising goat's milk in the Soviet Autonomous Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. Twenty-seven delegates were (literally) bored rigid. The surviving members of the audience rapturously acclaimed Hoxha as Svinetsin' or Man of Lead- so lifeless was his prose, even when set besides the extraordinary achievements of previous communist writers; and Russian scientists were inspired to establish the Hoxha as the standard unit in the measurement of tedium, until it was superseded by the metric Honecker in the mid-1970s.
Hoxha's writing is unbelievably dense. In fact, calling it 'leaden' is no exaggeration as Albanian engineers actually used copies of this book to line nuclear shelters in Tirana, due to its amazing qualities as an anti-radiation shield. I'm glad to see that Hoxha's radical approach to prose style is still alive today in the work of Western academics, who are still 'pushing the envelope' by exploring the trail of obscurantism and cackhanded writing once blazed by this courageous pioneer. The fact that the Nobel Prize for Literature went to a rogue like Solzhenitsyn and not to the avant-garde Albanian is truly criminal. But maybe, thanks to works like this, many more readers will at last be able to acclaim Enver Hoxha as Svinetsin ' Man of Lead.
