Outstanding Biography of a Great American
John Dyer has written the fundamental biography of Joseph Wheeler. The work is a colorful, enjoyable read, which should be enjoyed by most -- it is most definitely NOT a dry, cardboard biography. All readers would enjoy the style in which Dyer writes.

Joseph Wheeler was a great American, perhaps overlooked somewhat in modern times due to his rather modest approach to life and duty. This approach seems to basically have been, 'put your head down, drive on, and perform one's Duty to the best of one's abilities, regardless of obstacles or consequences.' Wheeler upheld these principles throughout his life, having served in an astonishing number of military and political positions. He served as a Confederate Major General of Cavalry for much of the Civil War in the West. He became a planter, lawyer, and Congressman from North Alabama for much of the remainder of the 19th Century. Furthermore, he sought and gained a commission in the U.S. Army at the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. Indeed, he would command the 5th Corps, 1st Cavalry Division during combat operations in Cuba. Famous figures that served under his command there included, Colonel Leonard Wood, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt of Rough Rider fame, as well as the 9th and 10th US Regular Cavalry Regiments (The Buffalo Soldiers), also including Jack Pershing, later to command the AEF during WWI. After his death, Wheeler was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, and was one of only two former Confederate generals to have been granted that honor.

This book is highly recommended. Read it, and learn some more about a person that was truly representative of the great American Spirit, and whose life reflected an admirable and staunch observance of (and devotion to) Duty, Honor, and Country.

Great History
Dyer's book is one of the best I've seen regarding Joseph Wheeler.

Born in GA, raised in CT, obtaining his West Point commission from a NY senator, Wheeler was a product of both North and South. Robert E. Lee proclaimed that Wheeler was one of the two best cavalry commanders in the War Between the States (the other was J.E.B. Stuart) -- he was also one of the youngest, reaching the rank of Maj. Gen. at 26 years of age. While many of the old confederate commanders wasted away following the war, Wheeler became a prominent Congressman from Alabama, espousing reconciliation and industrialization within his section of North Alabama, this in order to overcome the ravages wrought by the war.

Wheeler had the distinction of being one of only two former Confederate general officers that LATER served at that rank for the US Army, this time during the Spanish-American War [Fitzhugh Lee (Robert E. Lee's nephew) was the other, although the war ended before Lee's troops could see action]. During the Cuban campaign, Wheeler had under his command such officers and men as Leonard Wood, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt (and the Rough Riders), "Black Jack" Pershing, and others that would gain prominence in later years.

Wheeler is one of the few (if not the only) high ranking former Confederate officers to have been granted the honor of being buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

His story deserves a unique place in the history of this nation.

From Shiloh to San Juan,The life of "Fightin"Joe Wheeler
This book is details the life of one extra ordinary man, General "Fightin" Joe Wheeler. It details his life as few bigraphies do. It details the the trumiphs and the failures. But in all of this you will see the chracter of the man ride high.He had the distinction of being both a Confederate General and also leading the US Voulunteers in Cuba and the Philippines. I would STRONGLY suggest buying this book for any history buff. He may not be as well known as Grant, Sherman, Lee or Longstreet, But his contribution to the History United States deserves to be known!

Good reference book beyond Tai chi styles
The book is very well written and full of useful tips. The basis of Tai Chi (basis in this case doesn't mean "elementary" but, as in the title, "the inner structure") are very well approached and described. What I've really appreciated is that every explained concept has the related exercise, tips and correction. Although the reverse breathing is not explained in this book and all the exercise and techniques are performed by using the normal breathing, the back spine role, position and work are exhaustively described as well as for the waists, knees, arms, elbows and wrists. That's what really makes this book a worth to buy.

A good reference for both Tai Chi and Qigong
Mantak gives a great overview of Tai Chi and also includes quite a lot of useful information for Qigong. In fact, depending upon your Qigong background you might find you have actually been performing "Tai Chi" exercises instead of "pure" Qigong. I find that the combination of exercises contained in this book are the perfect balance between moving and stationary Qi exercises and will facilitate quick results for anyone interested in Qi movement.

I think Mantak did a great job with the illustrations and although they are simple line drawings they convey a lot of useful information. Mantak's experience in dealing with the Western mind is evident in both the style and manner of presentation - very clear compared to many of the books by other so-called masters.

Mantak also does not promote anything that could possibly cause problems; something that some of the other books in print these days should consider. There was a reason many exercises were not publicized and one should be careful performing exercises without some form of supervision from a master.

The bottom line: a great book for a beginner and an excellent reference (to be loaned to those just starting) for people who have been practicing for a while. Good value for your money.

well written and contain detailed info on tai chi
One of the better written book on tai chi with great illustrations that explains the basic of tai chi in simple language. Explanation on chi and posture is by far the best that I have read. Highly recommended for beginner and intermediate practitioners.

MONTOYA: MASTER OF CLASSIC ELEGANCE
This masterful book is one of the very best design books out today. the fabulous photos give richly detailed images of how the mind of Montoya turns dreams into reality. Colorfully planned rooms evoke reverence for things past and present. Montoya's use of religious references inform us of his link with humanity. Indirect lighting mixed with many different kinds of stone, granite, marbles and limestone create theatrical yet uplifing interiors that make beckon us to linger. Always sensitive to his clients' desires and wishes, he incorporates scale, harmony and balance while implementing function with style. Montoya is a master of surprise, you'll go back to this collection of his work time and again.

Design excellence captured in print.
This 400 page pictorial of Juan Montoya's work, past and present, is an engaging look at the designer's commitment to creating living spaces with flair, refinement, and cultural aesthetic.

Juan Montoya reveals the inspirations for his designs - both furniture and interior design - coming from a broad range of technology; to foreign cultural artifacts that are used to enrich and enhance spaces.

The spaces he creates are magnificent - a miriad of textures and colors that blend harmoniously into a defined living space - which the self titled book reveals quite well. Large color images enable you to study subtle details of the various rooms. This book also gives you a certain time line of his experience and influences during recent decades. Much of the text is reprinted from Architectural Digest, among other periodicals and books. Not to miss is the spread that displays the custom furniture designs that have been created, and used in various client's residences and office spaces.

This is a great addition to anyone's design collection. Definately a keeper, as well as a great design resource.

LA Celestina

Average review score:

A forgotten and ignored classic
Celestina is amusing, ironic, and while the prose and dialogue is long and descriptive, it is never boring- I really enjoyed this play.

It captures the essance of good and evil in love.
Fernando De Rojas captures the truth of the love between man and woman in a time when novels were rarely written. This book plays out of a drama that inhabits the first concepts of the tragedy of love. It is what books like Romeo and Juliet are compared to.

It's Hip, Fascinating, Brilliant, Funny, and Sad.
"The Odd Brain" is hip. Double thumbs up. It's afascinating book about what Woody Allen calls his "second favorite organ". This book looks at recent research findings about what we know about the human brain. It relates the findings to behavior and daily life. It's funny what can happen when the brain goes awry in a positive sense. For example, foreign accent syndrome (read more about it). It's sad what can happen when the brain goes awry in a negative sense. For example, schizophrenia (again, read more about it). The author, Dr. Stephen Juan, is a legend in Australia where he teaches at the University of Sydney and appears on radio and television explaining just about everything about being a human being. If you want to know about the brain but don't want to dive deeply into heavy neuroscience, this is your book. Recommended for 12 year olds up.

Please get the author's name right: It's Dr. Stephen Juan
Naturally, this is a brilliant book. But this is the second time I've asked you to get the author's name right. Why can't you correct an obviously goofed up author's name? I can only communicate with Amazon this way since the normal email address of Amazon is incomplete according to my computer.

The correct name of the author is "Dr. Stephen Juan"
The correct name of the book is "The Odd Brain: Mysteries of Our Weird and Wonderful Brains Explained"

Grips the Heart
This book grips the heart and pulls on all the strings. It brings out the Filipino experience for the "Manongs" as no other book that I have read. This collection of short stories, essays, poems, and correspondance lets Carlos Bulosan bring out the total message. A must have book

Gripping Epic!
This reading should be considered one of Filipino-America's (and Asian America's) best literary works as of yet. There is no other writer prior to the cliche' "Amy Tan-esque" era that has made a lasting impact on American literature. The novel is (r)evolutionary in its attempt to educate generations of literature afficionados. What better way to pay tribute to equal rights activists than Bulosan's magnum opus? Bulosan is the next Walt Whitman and then some, beginning with his incipient stages in rural Pangasinan province, to his voyage to America and initiation into manhood and the adventures in between. He is Walt Whitman's echo, fervent, passionate, honest - speaking for all humankind, and fighting for the rights of 1930s struggling working class of Filipinos, Mexicans, Native Americans, African-Americans, and Asians.

Potent
Powerful works. Bulosan is poetic, honest and down-to-earth, and very vivid and lyrical in his descriptions of the atrocities he suffered as a Filipino living in America.

so good even my teenager listened!
A wonderful book! So lyrically written and beautifully illustrated
that it held the attention of my 11 year old son and 17 year old daughter
when I read it aloud to the family. Especially interesting were the author's
well-written notes at the end of the book that explained the symbolism used in the book.
As a result, the book was not only entertaining but gave us an opportunity to learn
about the Islamic mystics, the Sufi, and to see how allusions and metaphors were used
enhance the story. Get this book for your children -- so you can read it yourself!

Exquisite new Wolfson book
Margaret's books always sing. They are like music. Her first, Marriage of the Rain Goddess was pure poetry--and this one, her third, is similar. It is refreshing to find such writing in children's books. The illustrations are breathtaking. This book is like a dream.

magical, mystical, mysterious
A beautiful and unusual story. The writing is like rare jewels, and the illustrations are extraordinary. I enjoyed this book because it featured a female who undergoes a spiritual transformation. Because of the rich inner story this makes an excellent book for adults as well--particularly for lovers of the poet Rumi. Superb.

Pedro Paramo Y El Llano En Llamas
Published in Hardcover by Planeta Pub Corp (1995)
Author: Juan Rulfo
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

A Must Have!!
This book is an excellent addition to both the professional and nonprofessional. The details in it are superb. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the study of animal behavior.

Comprehensive guide
This is by far the best book I have read on animal behaviour as it covers every aspect of about 20 species lives' in great detail and with simplicity of language, which makes it a great read for every animal enuthsiast. It contains avid description of animals' habits, from eating to sleeping to sexual behaviour, and why certain species behave the way they do. I suppose the only slightly disappointing aspect of this book is that it contains no photography whatsoever, although it does hold a good amount of illustrations. I was also not in favor of the fact that the author based much of her explanations on the theory of evolution. Otherwise, I think the book is successfully interesting and comprehensive.

This One's A Winner!
This book contains information on the behavior of 20 completely different species from 5 extremely diverse locations. I liked the way it was organized, with many charts and great detailed information. It touches on so many subjects in detail, yet the information it holds is as valuable as if it was contained in 20 separate books. Wrote in a way any amateur to animal science can understand, I hold this book as invaluable.

Silver San Juan
If you own one book on the RGS, this has to be it.

BEST BOOK ON THE RGS
Wonderful pictures and data! Simply the best RGS book

The best Rio Grande Southern book ever published!
Silver San Juan is simply the best single book on the Rio Grande Southern that you can get!

Silver San Juan tells a fairly complete story of this narrow gauge railroad; how and why it was built, the life and times of the line, and its' eventual demise. It covers the line from North to South and touches on all the branches in between.

Plus, it includes detailed rosters and photos of the locomotives and rolling stock of this little railroad that you simply cannot get anywhere else.

The colorful life of the "Southern" could fill thousands of pages. But, if you had to tell the story in a single volume, you couldn't do it better than this book does.

All in all, this is the single most important book in any Rio Grande Southern fan's library.
