a lesson in listening
Tolya has created a challenging child who just won't listen. Fiesty Lucy bypasses the voices around her until nature causes her to stop and pay attention to its conversations. Neighbors, flowers and bees alike tell Lucy what she's been missing. Intelligent, Lucy learns to be here now. Insight into laryngitis, Lucy's minor medical ailment, provides an added attraction for parents. All my friends love Lucy and have purchased the book for the children in their lives. We can't wait to meet Tolya's next 'Smartie Pants'.

Lance Loved Lucy
I am six years old. My mom and I read Loud Lips Lucy last night and I really liked it. I put the book under my pillow. Thank you and I can't wait to read the next book. I may be able to read it by myself soon.

Inner City Lucy
Lucy is just like any other NYC public elementary school girl. She is exciting, anxious and finally grows up to realize that the world is changing every minute. Lucy's innocence provides the reality, that we all remembered as children. Our children must realize that Lucy is a very special child and her message is profound!

Great activities to cure the winter blues
This book provides tons of great ideas for activities for your preschooler. I am a stay at home mom using these ideas to keep my kids busy. The book is organized by themes. Each theme has songs, fingerplays, arts/crafts, play ideas, science subjects, etc. to tie into that subject. You can do as little or as much of it as you want. It also provides a list of story books to accompany each theme. It's well thought out and organized.

The best book I've ever own
I'm a daycare provider and I've recently bought this book and now I can't live with out it! It's a Great book to own!

Additional thoughts on Creative Resources
This is the best Early Childhood book I own! In addition to what others have mentioned, some of the aspects I particularly appreciate are:

~Resources
every source is documented, giving unending
possibilities to pursue

~Books!
at the end of each unit is a list of books
relevant to the topic

~Webbing
each unit begins with a flowchart, listing
many aspects or branches of the main theme.
(This is a tremendous help in beginning to
think through how to personalize the units)

~INTERACTIVE Bulletin Boards
while the bulletin boards are a bit repetitive
(similar concepts for all the boards, but the
objects involved change with the themes), kids
tend to pay more attention to these
Interactive boards than to traditional ones.

The Art and Science of Motor Racing!!
The Technique of Motor Racing
by Piero Taruffi

Aloha,
Thirty years ago I was a driver for the "Jim Russell International Racing Driving School" out at Willow Springs, CA USA. One of the greatest times in my life. Jim Russell (JRS) at that time had schools simultaneously on five continents. We taught in so many languages that we did not have a textbook of our own. JRS was busy training movie stars and World Champions for Formula One Race Car Driving. JRS put students in signal seaters from day one! We use to order Taruffi's by the case. It had been "The Book!" for over ten years and was very hard to find. I think Harry Morrow would get them for us from England. They would sell out every time. We could not keep them on the shelf.

I use the principles I learned every time I take to the road. I believe it has helped make me a safer and definitely faster better Motor Vehicle Driver. Probably contributed to my long life, considering I am in the habit of winning on or off the track.

For decades I did not see Taruffi at all. Sometimes I would pick them up in old bookstores. I am glad for the sake of all future drivers that someone has had the wisdom to keep Taruffi in publication. Just the fact that it is around after all these years should tell you something.

Even today, you will seldom see them sold used. You will never see them sold cheap. Many driving books are about the author. Some are about street driving. Taruffi is pure Racing!! How you can drive a car faster. The essence of driving. I do not see how things could have changed enough to invalidate anything Taruffi has had to say. Decide for yourself, you can always return it.

If you have read every book on Motor Racing ever published. You will find The Technique of Motor Racing not only has a lot to offer you. It may just be the most compact bit of Racing Knowledge you have ever found in one place.

Pass Um`

A Superb Book on Motor Racing Technique
What a superb book on motor racing. Mr.Taruffi excelled in giving facts & information on motor racing technique. With all the diagrams, charts & photos added, it makes this book a must for beginners in motor racing. Mr. Taruffi excelled marvellously on driving topics such as cornering, braking and even general advice relatively on motor racing. With his vast experiences in racing such as Mille Miglia & Grand Prix along with top drivers during the racing hayday such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Ascari, Farina and others, it makes him a truly proffesional author to write on this matter.

Classic book covering the concepts and techniques of racing
The timeless book which has taught hundreds of racing enthusiasts to exceed their expectations and conquer the race track. Although this book was originally written 40 years ago, there are few books which detail the techniques and concepts behind motor racing so clearly. This is definately a book that belongs on every true racing enthusiasts bookshelf.

Gaudi Triumphantes!
Essentially this is a picture book, but what pictures! The photography has used the extraordinary architecture and added a new dimension to it in vision and lighting. If you would know Gaudi, look at his work: and this is one of the best ways to do it if you cannot readily get to Catalunya. In addition, the production and design of the book, in a relatively small format, has been very carefully thought out, resulting in one of those rare volumes which is delightful to handle and admire in its own right, quite apart from its content. An absolute little gem.

A Beautiful Book!
If Gaudi wanted a book about his works, then he would buy this one. It's absolutely gorgeous! The photography is spectacular and the text is concise and meaningful. It's a definite attention-grabber on any coffee table!

Great book for anybody interested in Gaudi and his works
As a student in architecture I spent some time looking for a good book on the works of Antonio Gaudi. I wasn't happy with any of the subject materials that were out there until I stumbled into this book. The clarity of the pictures are amazing and could make anyone feel as though they were right in front of La Sagrada Familia. This book also includes some of Gaudi's sketches, as well as a few floor plans, elevations, and sections of some of his well known buildings. If you are a fan of Antonio Gaudi then this book would defenitely be a good investment. Even if you're not a student in architecture this book will make you appreciate the creativity of Antonio Gaudi, and his use of symbolism (in La Sagrada Familia)

The perfect writing
One regrettable consequence of Garcia Marquez's fame is that Latin American literature has come to be identified exclusively with "magical realism". Everything has to be extraordinary, epic, full of tropical lust, palms, jaguars, people having sex in every corner, flying to the sky with a pineapple on their heads. But Latin America is a vast continent producing artist of universal stature, even if the rest of the world decides (to their disadvantage) to ignore all but the folkloric.

Well, Juan Rulfo is a master of the highest sort and this book is NOT magical realism, but pure, hard realism. He only wrote two books, this one and "Pedro Paramo", another masterpiece which I also don't count as magical realism, although some do, as well as a few lesser works. He didn't need to write much. His is a literature worked and reworked restlessly, until reaching perfection. Every single word fits perfectly with the rest. There are no digressions, no philosophy, no theories or grand landscapes. All his tales develop in Southern Jalisco, in a poor, dry, vast, sunburned and sad land. The prose is also dry, precise, economical and to the point. The characters are ignorant, miserable, but conscious and courageous. The titles say much: "It's because we are so poor" is one of them. However, you will not find self-pity or corny sad tales. Only bits of human misery perfectly narrated. By the way, this is the first review I write for Amazon in which I use the word "perfect". Probably it won't happen again, with one or two exceptions.

A masterpice of short stories
ANGST. This is the best word to describe the human landscape that Rulfo has portrayed in this collection of short stories. A lanscape of extreme sorrow that blossoms over the arid plain, where poverty, opression and ignorance intermingle with faith to shape the tragedy of the post-revolutionary rural Mexico. A tragedy that has lived over 70 years and that may help explaining the nature of the mexican people, their doings and fears. But moreover its social meanings, Juan Rulfo, has created a masterpiece of storytelling, not only at the Latin-american level, but rather as an universal gift. This is not magic realism alà Garcia Marquez or Isabel Allende. This is bare boned reality, told with the beauty and the ease that just a master can reach, in which the words mix perfectly for creating short bursts of narrative, perfectly solved stories, that will fill the mind, the mouth and the eyes of the reader with the burnt sand of the plains, with the ashes of the dead, with the tears of the desperate. If you're ready to follow Tanilo's bloody footsteps toward Talpa, to hunt toads with Macario, or to fall under the spell of Niño Anacleto's preaching, or under the spell of misterious rural Mexico, dive into the pages of this collection of short stories, and compare it with any other you have already read, and you will understand why Rulfo never writed any further. Because he almost reached perfection.

The translation is so wonderful, I wish I could read spanish
Sorry, I did not buy this book from Amazon, but I will by the other Rulfo books available. I found this book in a used book store, I happened to be browsing through. I don't even know what caught my eye, but what a find. This is so beautifully written. I must admit that though I at one time had a strong interest in the Mexican Revolution, I have forgottem much of what I learned, so some of the stories were hard for me to understand in their historical context. The writing is so evocative, however, that it doesn't matter. The feeling of desolation is almost too overwhelming. I was reminded somewhat of Ernest Hemingway by the use of short declarative sentences, also I suppose because Hemingway often used Spanish phrasing in his work. The best writing, in my opinion, evokes a feeling rather than describing it. Rulfo accomplishes that amazingly.

A modern classic
Along with "The Cost of Discipleship" by Bonhoeffer and "Mere Christianity" by Lewis, "Disciple" is essential reading for any Christian seeking to grow deeper in Christ. This book is so profound, yet so simple, that even those who are seeking will benefit.

Ortiz cleaves to the classic belief that to call oneself "a Christian" means surrendering all to Christ. We die to live. By giving up our corrupted lives we are able to take on His perfect life. The lordship of Christ must reign supreme in the life of the disciple. This runs counter to much of what Christians are hearing in church on Sunday or reading from the Christian bestseller lists. "Disciple" explores all aspects of this surrender and what it means for those of us who are born-again.

Rarely does a Christian book achieve such beautiful lucidity while also being readable by such a large cross-section of the populace. The conversation depicted between the disciple and Jesus on what is required to follow is eloquent, but oh so easy to understand. Theology comes difficultly to many, but not as explained in "Disciple" - it becomes a soul-stirring joy.

By all means, read this book. It is an excellent primer for the new in Christ, and a wonderful refresher course to those of us who have been walking with Christ for many years.

I Strongly Encourage Every Believer To Read This Book!
Aside from the Bible, this is certainly the best book ever written. I hate reading, but I picked this book up and began to skim it, then I stayed up until 2:00 in the morning to keep reading it. Then I set my alarm for 5:00 so I could read it some more before school. I think everyone--from pastors to new Christians--can benifit from this book.

Extremely challenging and practical
An extremely challenging and practical book that explains what it REALLY means to be a Disciple of Jesus Christ. Divided into two sections, the first section, New Wine, calls us to true discipleship as found in the New Testament, and the second section, New Wineskins, challenges traditional thoughts about the Church as a whole and its structure.

Enchanted Islands
Helen Glidden wrote this gem for the amusement of her children. Lucky for us, she was persuaded to have it published. Now, happily, 50 years hence it's back in print. It's an enchanting story (mostly true) about a large family (13 children) of light house keepers posted to tiny Patos Island in the San Juan Islands of NW Washington State at the turn of the century. It is told through the eyes of the five-year-old, middle daughter and comes complete with smugglers, heroes, a murder or two, colorful characters, whimsy and plenty of humor. Glidden masters the tricky business of writing from the point of view of a youngster growing from five to 13 who, for example, thinks the bushy bearded man living on the lam in their forest and know only to her is God. The author was this girl.

Fun Reading
This book if fun to read, Good writing, Makes you laugh and cry. You will have a great time with this book.

The Light On The Island Returns
In 1953 as a 10 year old living in upstate New York, I read The Light On The Island and was mesmerized by the adventures of Angie and her family on Patos Island. Living on an island with a lighthouse, surrounded by marine animals and birds, rowing about in boats, exploring the beaches, coves and woods of Patos was a dreamworld away from mine. The book remained one of my favorite childhood books,[ I still have the book---its dustcover in tatters] so imagine how I felt when 16 years later I met my husband, who was from the Seattle area and we eventually moved there and Angie's world was in my backyard. Four years ago we took our sailboat up to Patos and we walked the beaches, "the petticoats" of Patos Island. For young and old alike, The Light On The Island explores the world of a child, the dreams, the harsh reality, the innocence, life and death, and growing up. Read it for the first time, read it again, ---it will light up your day!

The Complete Platero
This translation of Platero and I is the only "complete" translation into English of the Spanish Classic. It is also the most Spanish! This refers to the paperback edition.

The Return to Simplicity
This is a beautiful little book by a Nobel Prize Winner of Literature that is too often neglected, Juan Ramon Jimenez.

Only Jimenez could make the blood of a leach in a stream of water into beautiful imagery. Children read this book as part of their curriculum in Argentina, however, this book can be equally enjoyed and appreciated by adults.

The story is a simple one: it is a first person (semi-autobiographical) account of a poet and his donkey in the mountains of Spain, appreciating, almost Zen-like, the simple beauties of life. The elements, children playing, leaches bleeding in a pool, everything seems beautiful in this book, and the descriptions are exquisite.

This is probably the best introduction to Jimenez, a book not to be missed!

sencillez y belleza

Great story
My three kids want to have me read the story every night. They are also learning to read in Spanish. I recommend it highly.

My kids loved it.
Having been raised in northern New Mexico, I could associate with the entire story and culture. We need more children's books like this.

Good children's stort
