Wonderful book for MEG students and scholars
Dr. Darrell Pepper is a wonderful professor. I was in his MEG 700 class at UNLV and He is the best professor I have had so far during my graduate school career. This book is also wonderful in expalining difficult concepts clearly and charting difficult flow diagrams.

This book is oriented as a seminar which makes it more straightforward than any other regular book. Nasio was disciple of Lacan, but he didn't dig all the crazy stuff Lacan said. So, you won't see any crazy mathematical metaphor as in Lacan work. That is, Nasio talks about Lacanian theory without the nonsense of Lacan that was so criticized by Sokal and Brickmont. A Must to Have book.

Awesome!
I recently returned from Argentina where I purchased this book before it was available here in the US. I own dozens of fly fishing books but there is none that compares to the outstanding photography in this book. It is a book every fly fisherman should own, whether or not they have ever fished Argentina. The book covers every important river in the Lake District and the bilingual text makes for excellent reading. I am purchasing copies for friends.

This is a superior study of modern Central American history
This book presents an excellent analysis of recent Central American history, and in particular of the role of the U.S. in helping sustain -- or undermine -- democratically-elected governments. The case made about Costa Rica merits special praise, as Zarate convincingly argues that the deliberate lack of American intervention at a critical political moment -- the success of leftist candidates in national elections -- helped guarantee the survival of democracy in that nation.
Although Zarate presents a generally optimistic view of US hegemony (both historical and potential) in the region, he does point to the CIA as a crucial and malefic agent that purposefully undermined Guatemala's democracy in the 1950s and subsequently supported a series of military regimes. This honesty is rare among historians of Latin America, who are often blinded by their own ideology, left or right.
Zarate's text is cogently argued and lucidly presented, and I recommend it to anyone interested in US policy in Central America.

A Critical Analysis of Filipino Amerika
Dr. E. San Juan, Jr., former chair of the department of Comparative American Cultures, Washington State University, is a world-renowned scholar, cultural critic and clearly the most versed in the analysis of neocolonial relations between the Philippines and the United States. This book, by far, has provided the most in depth coverage on the Filipino American community by tracing the historical legacy of famous Filipino American pioneers like Carlos Bulosan, Philip Vera Cruz, and other Filipino Americans. While providing a beautiful presentation of Philippine American relations and the dynamic of the Filipino American being, the underlying tone of the book suggest that the Filipino American phenomenon is a historical one, which is rooted in the oppressive stronghold of U.S. imperialism. Furthermore, that Filipino Americans are a byproduct of those relations, and are, in fact, economic exiles in a land that produced the economic strife they lived in. Today over eight million Filipinos live outside of the Philippines in almost every country on the planet, with a little more than 3 million of them living in the United States. Forced into economic exile because of displacement and poverty created through U.S. imperialism, Filipino Americans should not forget the past they have been dislocated from, through the journey of assimilating into American reality. But they should re-member, restore, and remap their understanding of Philippine-US relations and see how they factor into the equation of global imperialism.

If You Loved FAERIES, You'll Feel Equally About GIANTS.
I've always loved this book, ever since I was a little kid. While the illustrations in GIANTS are not quite up to the magical standards to those of Alan Lee and Brian Froud in FAERIES (heck, nothing is), the drawings here are still very impressive. It's a real shame this book is out of print, for it deserves just as much publicity as FAERIES. It makes an excellent companion piece to the all-new FAERIES: 25th ANNIVERSARY EDITION, GNOMES, and (if you can find it, which I was fortunate enough to) it's sequal SECRETS OF THE GNOMES. All four provide hours and hours of mystical reading, and all four together look fantasitc on your shelf. Trust me!

A superbly presented and recommended bilingual picturebook.
Young Juanito works with his Grandma Esperanza in selling clothing and used books at the local community flea market. As Juanito goes about running errands and bartering goods, he finds himself in the heart of a thriving Mexican American community, one that Juanito knows to be caring and generous, whose value can never be measured only in dollars. A superbly presented bilingual (English/Spanish) picturebook written by the Mexican-American poet Juan Felipe Herrera and illustrated by folk artist Anita De Lucio-Brock, Grandma And Me At The Flea is highly recommended for young readers ages 6 to 10.
