Very engaging and informative.
Wanda Wyrwicka is not the best author in the world as she can be very dull and dry in some parts. However this very short book is crammed full of information. The author discusses everything from conditioning of internal organs including brain rhythms to complex reflexes. I really enjoyed her theoretical comments and the last chapter, which is a summary and conclusion of the entire book. The conclusion really ties all the information together and refreshes the reader of the main points. Overall a very good book on the subject matter although some main points are tricky but not too tough that the average reader cannot finish the book without learning and understanding the main theme.

easy grammar in daily bits
The Daily Grams are a series of books that make it possible to insert a ten minute grammar lesson into each day. The lessons may include correctly punctuating a sentence, correcting capitalization, identifying the parts of speech in a sentence or combining two simple sentences into a complex one. Each book contains 180 lessons- one for each day of the school year. A fun and simple way to keep grammar skills practiced and reviewed or to reinforce skills recently acquired.

Good supplement
The exercises in this manual are very good--challenging and appropriate extensions to the concepts introduced in Hacker's book (which is, by the way, an outstanding reference book). However, I would have appreciated answers to all of the exercises, not just some of them. As an English teacher, I can deduce the correct answers, but some of the questions lend themselves to multiple interpretations, and it is not always clear what Hacker and Van Goor have in mind as correct answers. For example, in a section on concise sentences, they suggest that a long sentence can be compressed into ten words (I am estimating, as I do not have the book in front of me). I could come up with an eight-word sentence and a twelve-word sentence, but I was left guessing as to what might be the ten-word sentence they had in mind.

I use this book for tutoring and not classroom teaching, however. I can see the value of the book for high school or college teachers whose students have copies of the book and who are asked to complete the exercises on their own. The lack of a complete answer key, then, can be an asset.

The Great American Thing: Modern Art and National Identity, 1915-1935

enlightening but a little incomplete
Wanda Corn's book is the most extensive atttempt to put early modern art in the United States into its social, historical, and cultural context. In doing this, it has little competition. Most books in this field have been monographic studies of style--in other words mostly formalist analyses purely and totally. It is fortunate that Corn makes the central thesis of her book quite clear in the introduction and first chapter. She believes that there are connections between style and culture and she is determined to connect the visual with the social-historical meanings it often conveys.

Corn has done an enormous amount of research for this book and she provides many new insights. She connects the art to the time and place of creation with insight, enthusiasm and a lot of evidence to back up her opinions and observations. She even identifies, describes and traces the cultural roots of a distinctly American aesthetic in early modern painting that she labels "billboard cubism." The book is structured with a long introduction, six chapters in which a single work by one artist is the focus (although many other works are discussed along the way) and an epilogue to trace how the issues at hand evolved after the period of time covered in this book.

The book has some problems. The basic structure of the book as a series of case studies is somewhat off-putting. It is not clear how relevant the author's arguments focused on six works by six very different artists are to the breadth of art produced at this time. Her decision to make Gerald Murphy and not Stuart Davis the focus of one chapter is perplexing. Davis is much better known, he was more prolific, and there is more literature (although still not enough to answer some enduring questions) on him. The first chapter, on Duchamp's Fountain, tends to become somewhat unfocused as the author casts her perspective on the work's context a little too wide.

All in all, an attractive book with lovely reproductions that is highly informative. Recommended strongly for students of American art and history.

Home on Stoney Creek
Home on Stoney Creek is a wonderful book. It takes you through the challanges that Sarah Moore faces leaving all that she knows, to go live in an untamed wilderness. It tells of the trials of moving, something many readers can relate to.

Nice full-color book about embroidery, knitting and crochet
This is a big, beautiful book full of full color photographs with close-up details. It has a great table of contents that clearly outlines the contents of the book. Unfortunately, there is no index. This book has information about embroidery, knitting and crochet.

My main area of interest is in embroidery. The embroidery section includes basic information about fabric and fiber selection and how to reproduce designs. It then goes into information and instruction on specific stitches. It has more information about surface and crewel embroidery than counted thread techniques.

This is an absolutely gorgeous book. Even though it is an "older"book, the photos do not seem "dated." The works are timeless. The photography is wonderful, with good, clear close-up shots. The beading and metallic photos appear to shine. The book is printed on good heavy paper stock, and is quite substantial.

The crochet and knitting sections are equally well-photographed, with clear close-up images. Directions are written in a "how to" paragraph style.

Preach on Sister, Preach on: The Queen of Comedy
Published in Audio CD by Uproar Entertainment (2003)
Authors: LA Wanda Page and David Drozen
Amazon base price: $16.98
Average review score:

Ahead of her time
LaWanda Page is a hilarious comedienne and although her material is shocking in its raw sexual humor, most of the things that she's making us laugh about are familiar and human, and it's heart-warming and comforting, actually, to hear such obsenity come out of the mouth of a woman (and at the time, LaWanda was in her 50s!). Keep in mind that this recording was made more than 30 years ago. LaWanda Page was ahead of her time then and I'm not sure we've caught up with her yet.
My only lament is that this is a particularly short CD.
