This is a great book for anyone interested in this subject, whether initiate or not. It provides insight from a number of the initial 20th century pioneers, as well as gives us a window into the inner ritual as performed by the more rural indian "initiates". I would recommend this book to anyone interested in using entheogens, writing about entheogens, or anyone who has used them previously and would like a better understanding of their experience. I especially liked the different perspectives such as referring to their experiences as just that-personal experiences rather than simply hallucinations, which implies something false or nonexistant. It provides a profound respect for these experiences rather than a complete dismissal of the experience as nonsense, as our governments and "health" agencies may be tempted to do.

If you want a number of perspectives on the serious use of psychedelics, this is the book! Christian, Buddhist, spiritual, scientific and legal considerations on the subject are presented.

As an anthology, it will familiarize you with key figures in the contemporary psychedelic scene.

This is an intelligent book for people wanting to explore psychedelics for spiritual purposes. It is not a book for "stoners" who just want to trip to see "pink bunnies"

I was given the opportunity to catalog Dr. Gentry's herbarium collection at the Desert Botanical Garden in 1987-88. I haven't seen the new edition mentioned here, but read the original work at the time I was cataloging his herbarium specimens. Through it, I was able to share his experience as an explorer in the spirit of John Wesley Powell, someone who knew that the American southwest is best delineated by watersheds, not along false lat/long lines. I met Dr. Gentry a couple of times, and remember the occasions well. Last time I saw him, when I was cataloging his collection, I overheard a conversation between him and a consultant for the Fort McDowell Indian Community. The consultant was asking about desert-adapted crop plants. Dr. Gentry went into great detail describing many desert plants suited to agriculture - tepary beans, jojoba, Lippia (Mexican oregano), agave, chiltepines, gum arabic, etc. I learned a lot just by eavesdropping. The consultant listened, but did not hear the words. He recommended that the Fort McDowell people plant cotton. Not because it was best suited to desert agriculture - far from that. They planted cotton because it needs vast quantities of water. They did not want the best desert-adapted crops. What they wanted, instead, was the best crop for wasting water, so that they could establish valid rights to the water. Worse, I watched them clear off vast acreages of mesquite forests to make room for the water-wasting cotton crop. The Hopi call this koyaanisqatsi. This book should help folks in southwestern north America realize that we have a bounteous resource, if we can only learn to use it.

Located in a transition zone between the Sonoran Desert and the tropics,this region is well known for its biodiversity, thanks to a 1942 study by botanist Howard Scott Gentry. Revision of his classic work began before his death in 1993. For researchers, this is a must-read book. It provides a clear overview of botanical studies of the Rio Mayo, a contemporary view of the vegatation, excerpts from the original text and an annotated list of plants.

I admit I was skeptical about the power of folk medicine, but I'm a longtime fan of Lauren David Peden's literature, so I decided to pick it up. (Read her book on Donna Richardson, and you'll turn into an exercise freak!) I wasn't disappointed. I had chronic eczema, and with the herbal remedies the book recommends, my rashes are almost gone! And my night sweats are a thing of the past. I'm sold.

I checked this out at the library and decided I had to have a copy! I have referred to this book many times and it has been right on the mark (for me,at least). It's most interesting and fun to read.The recipes and instructions are fun and quite effective. Pat F.

This is one of the best analysis of Higher Biblical Criticism available. Two evangelical Biblical scholars (Thomas & Farnell) tackle this issues quite ably. They begin by discussing the roots of Higher Biblical Criticism and the trends it has undergone up to the present day. Moreover, the authors do in fact cover B. Spinoza's influence on the overall issue, something that many books of this kind neglect (Spinoza could be considered one of the "father's" of Higher Criticism). Furthermore, the authors deal with the philosophical rub of higher criticism (i.e. philosophical hermeneutics) as well as the areas of source criticism and redaction criticism. Another positive aspect of the book is the fact that these authors discuss the well known Biblical scholar Eta Linnemann (former student of Rudolf Bultmann - I had the privilege of hearing her speak on these very issues). Linnemann has some of the strongest refutations of Higher Biblical Criticism still in print today. Lastly, these authors discuss the inroads of higher criticism into evangelical circles and the dangers and problems that it causes in the areas of apologetics, the gospel, preaching, and especially hermeneutics. While the topics at hand can be somewhat difficult, these authors have brought the issues back down to earth and written in such a way that a wide ranged audience will be able to enjoy the contents. This is a definitive work in this area, and a must read for evangelicals (and/or other Biblical conservatives) who find men like J. Crossan, M. Borg, R. Funk (the current adherents to many of the issues of Higher Biblical Criticism) and others intimidating. I highly recommend this book.

This book shows you the dangers found in much of evangelical scholarship regarding critical study of the gospels. It is an invaluable tool for anyone who wishes to understand how to approach a study of the gospels without compromising the integrity of the texts.

This book is incredible -- an honest and sensitive portrait of life in the changing Sonoran desert. I picked it up yesterday and haven't been able to stop looking at it since. Apart from the photography, there are two wonderful essays. In the second, "Another Country", Thomas E. Sheridan tells of falling in love with a place in a way that speaks intimately to my own experience of and passion for Mexico. But I'd better stop before I give a whole dissertation... Buy this book! You won't regret it.

Superb black and white photographs, with accompanying essays, concentrate on ordinary people. The result transcends its geographic region; this is about people who just happen to live in Sonora. Winner, Border Regional Library Association's 1998 Southwest Book Award.

I thought that this was a very assured and informative biography of Thomas Wolfe, not only shedding light on his development and work as an author, but also bringing the reader close to getting a feel of what Wolfe the human being must have been like.

I felt that Donald, whilst being a fan of Wolfe's work, maintained a balanced assessment of him: Wolfe had highly unattractive traits - a heavy drinker, untidy and unkempt, intolerant (especially of Jews, which was ironic given the fact that he had a long relationship with Mrs Aline Bernstein, who was herself Jewish) and frequently overbearing.

Wolfe's early struggles to establish himself as a playwright and his emergence as a novelist are described in detail. Wolfe was essentially a "prose machine" unable to control the flows of words and thus the length and structure of his novels. I found the accounts of Wolfe's relationship with his editors, Maxwell E Perkins and latterly Edward C Aswell, fascinating.

A must for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of this interesting novelist.

Did you know that F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway all had the same editor at Charles Scribner's and Sons: Maxwell Perkins. Some critics have said that Perkins basically wrote Tom Wolfe's last novel because it was a too-long mess that needed to be edited into a cohesive whole. I read halfway through "Look HomeWard Angel" and "Of Time and the River". Both read like a hot day in Asheville, North Carolina. When I have time I plan to go back and reread these novels because Shelby Foote and Walker Percy spoke highly of them.

I found this book very helpful in deepening my prayer time with God. The prayers can also be used as devotionals as they reference specific scriptures throughout. A variety of topics are covered including prayers for worshiping God, dealing with sin, sickness and disease, relationships, and praying to bring in the Kingdom of God. I was challenged by this book to pursue God in a deeper way and inspired by His greatness.

As an evangelical pastor who collects prayer books for use in personal devotions and for use from the pulpit, I have found "Prayers to Move Mountains" to be the best I have seen thus far.

The prayers are written simply, in plain English, but are nonetheless beautiful. They have substance, are anchored to Scripture, and though written for personal prayer times, are easily adapted for groups. The prayers are pretty much mainstream evangelical/fundamental with a slight charismatic twist in a few of them, and the few prayers which may reflect a variation from the readers point of view may be easily adjusted. I am a non-charismatic and only feel I need to slightly adjust a handful of the prayers.

The book contains 108 practical and reverential prayers divided into 11 categories, each prayer about 2 short pages long. The categories are: Worshiping God for Who He is, Thanking God for What He Has Done, Becoming More Like Jesus, Sin, Stress, Marriage and Family, The Lives of Your Children, Relationships, Job and Career, Sickness and Disease, and Bringing in the Kingdom of God.

If you are a Bible-oriented Christian, you will appreciate this prayer book. Go for it.

The third in a series from a PBS show of the same name. (see the reviews on the other two tapes in this series)This is so well done that you can listen to it over and over and always come away with something new and stimulating each and every time. With out going into a detailed explanation of the series this is simply a superb compilation of some of the thoughts and ideas as expressed by some of our era's best author's, lecturer's and thinkers. It is so well organized and presented that all three tapes flow one into the other. As with many series where the latter in the series are not as strong as the first, this is not the case here. All three are equally as strong without repeating and without pandering to the listener. It is a must own series for those who enjoy being stimulated to THINK! And for those who don't you might be surprised--you might still come away with an experience that you will enjoy. Own all three.

Even though the book was written in Europe (it refers to some materials, which are hard to find in the U.S.), its quite useful and well written. I consider myself an experienced scratch builder, but I found a lot of useful information, building techniques, and construction ideas in this book. Highly recommend to everybody using foam in the airplane construction.

This compilation of David Jackson Logan's writings detailing his experiences during the Civil War is second to none! You won't be able to put this outstanding book down until you've finished it. The authors have melded all sources into an unforgettable book.

This book does an outstanding job of following David Jackson Logan's life during the Civil War, through letters to his wife and family, letters to the newspaper, and his diary. I am fortunate to have already known what an outstanding man David Jackson Logan was, as well as, his father, John Randolph Logan, and his siblings. Especially David's brother Ben F. Logan, my great-great grandfather. I hope everyone enjoys reading this incredible book.
