a well-done history
Britain started out ahead, but partly for that reason her carrier forces (and especially planes) were less suited for combat than America's. This is an excellent study of how that came to pass. Sadly missing is an equally insightful look at the Japanese carrier fleet, which in the winter of 1941-42 was arguably the equal of America's.

Just what the title promises :)
An intelligent and thoughtful study of how it happened that the United States started late, yet managed to enter World War II with a better carrier force than the Royal Navy. (In part, this was because the US *did* start late, and therefore didn't have an installed base of obsolete equipment.)

The only problem with this book is that it doesn't give equal time to the Japanese carrier fleet, which as it happened was America's only real competitor in this developing science.

Just the basics
If you are looking for a clear and interesting summary of many key concepts of Biotechnology, this book is for you. The author does a nice job of distilling the important concepts for both the scientist and layman alike. For the scientist, the book provides a nice review of the basics, and for the layman, it explains many difficult principles. At the end of each chapter the author also provides a lively discussion of some interesting practical applications and problems solved by Biotechnology.

Excellent overview of the subject matter and well written!
The text provides an excellent overview of biotechnology for a person at the College level. The book is probably too shallow in depth for someone who wants to actually major in the subject matter. Nonetheless, the book serves its intended purpuse well to introduce biotechnology at a reaonably sophisticated level to the student. The book starts with the basics of organic chemistry principles and expands them to biochemistry. Well done!
All the important technological and commercial concepts relevant to biotechnology are present and explaned well through text as well as diagrams. Perhaps one aspect that science books don't emphasize is writting style. The books is extremely clear and well written and can probably serve as an example of good technical writting style. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is serious about wanting to understand Biotechnology. As long as you hand Freshmand chemistry this book should serve you.

A great resource for the Beginning All Grain Brewer
This is one of my favorite of the classic Beer Styles Series. It is one of the shortest and Most concise, Miller doesn't go into a lot of history and obsecure style disscussion here, nor does he get too technical. What he does do is present the basics, and he does it all in a non-threating, easy to read style. This is a great resource for Pilsner Fans

This is why I can brew a good pilsner
Miller is a master at simplifying complex procedures. I recommend this book for good tips in brewing ANY variety of lager beer, not just pils. My pilsners are my best beers, due to this book and Noonan's New Brewing Lager Beer.

Great cross-sectional anatomy book for medical professionals
This cross-sectional anatomy book provides a complete and precise look into the anatomic structures seen in the cross-sectional plane. With the use of cadaver sections, illustrations and corresponding diagnostic images the anatomy is displayed with great detail. Also included are explanations and descriptions which enhance the knowledge of the human body and its functions. As an instructor in Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, I would HIGHLY recommend this book for those wishing to expand their "anatomical knowledge". The sophistication of this book would be ideal even for the most advanced learner in human anatomy.

High Quality Imaging
It was Wednesday, 1pm and I found myself in the paediatric X-ray meeting staring at an abdominal CT scan desperately attempting to relate the collection of black, white and grey shapes to the anatomy I had studied in the dissecting room over a year ago in anticipation of the questioning which was undoubtedly to follow. Cross Sectional Human Anatomy from Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins sets out to enable basic anatomy to be related easily to the cross sectional imaging commonly encountered within clinical settings. It uses the best imaging from the visible human project to present anatomy in a regional format with a chapter devoted to each region. Each chapter begins with a short description of the most important structures found within that region. Individual chapters contain numerous sections at different levels. Each level is given a double page spread, that contains a labelled cryosection with a diagram and short description to aid interpretation and most importantly a corresponding CT and or MR image. In addition, some diagnostic imaging using other methods (plain radiograph or ultrasound) is provided. All of the imaging is of high quality and web links to where the original visible human data can be viewed are provided. This is a useful book, that achieves what it sets out to do, filling the gap between the traditional anatomy book and the imaging atlas. This is a reasonably priced addition to the bookshelf for rapid review of the anatomy learnt in the pre clinical setting within a clinical context.

highly recommended
The editors of this volume attempt to instill an awareness of the dire need to include "scale" as a concept in ecological studies. Scale, in the discipline of ecology, is a difficult concept to codify and although there are many books that include scale, it is not often addressed directly. The most direct definition of scale for this purpose is that it "refers to physical dimensions of observed entities or phenomena . . . (or) . . . to the scale of observation, the temporal and spatial dimensions at which and over which phenomena are observed."

Often, ecological studies focus on only one variable such as area or habitat. Data is then extrapolated from that study to a larger scale. According to Peterson and Parker it is not uncommon to study a hectare of land and draw conclusions at a global level. They suggest that because extrapolation of this kind may or may not be valid, incorporating scale into the original study question is essential. To date, there is no one recognized source to which a researcher can turn for advice about dealing with scale in a particular area of study. This volume is divided into four topical sections: "Integrating Pattern, Process, and Scale;" "Interpreting Multiple Scales in Ecological Systems;" "Moving Across Scales: Ecological Inference and Applications;" and "Incorporating Scale Concepts in Ecological Applications." The essays, well written and clearly edited, are useful as an overall collection or as individual pieces.

The mechanics of this book are very well done. There is uniform referencing within each chapter and one overall reference list for the book. An "Alphabetic List of Contributors" includes addresses. The index is detailed and includes many Latin binomials, "see" references, and "see also" references. The layout of this volume makes routine photocopying and enlarging easy. The photographs, charts, and microscopic scans are exceptionally clearly presented with no color, but in good grey scale.

EXCELLENT coverage of scale in ecological systems
This book provides an in-depth look at the many issues of scale and other complexities in ecological systems. The editors did a great job choosing chapter authors and editing for clarity. The opening and closing chapters provide a good framework, and provide an extensive outline of literature on scale up to the mid-90's.

Good kid's story
This being the first "Thomas the Tank Engine" book I've ever read. I recognized some stories as word-for-word narrations from "Thomas" videos, but since I haven't seen ALL of the video or TV stories, some stories were new to me. My sons are big Thomas fans, so I know they'll love these books when they get them for Christmas!

Good story book
This is a good Thomas story book. There is a TV series about Thomas. Then there are vediotapes about Thomas and there are a whole lot toys about Thomas. Chilren like them all. When I bought this book, ha, my three young ones fought for it. And I had to read to them one by one in turn. And I have other Thomas book too. They just can get enough of Thomas.

A useful book. . .
. . .by authors who remember that they are writing for persons who are NOT professional mathematicians.

In today's world, frequently persons enter the business profession from a background in something other than what in the past might have been considered traditional avenues. Not all business textbooks recognize this (see my review for "Mathematical Applications")! However, this book seems to be an exception.

The material is presented in a logical format; key formulae are highlighted and set off from the rest of the text; and in-depth business examples are given in each chapter, demonstrating the particular statistical tools to be taught.

A useful and recommended volume.

Great Text!!
The information in this book is clear-cut, concise, and easy to read. Easily understandable examples are given for the various statistical formulas, and extras like z-score value charts and the like help a lot. If you have a talented instructor leading your Stats class (like I did) in addition to this text, you will be sure to ace this course (like I did)!

P.S.: If you happen to be an Information Systems/Information Technology major (such as myself) DO NOT RE-SELL THIS BOOK! You will need the information in this book in your future Info Systems courses, and you will definitely realize the TRUE value of this text!

A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.
However, most botanist may not be pleased to know that little attention was paid to plant viruses. Again, many potential buyers may be demoralized by the rather high price that this virology-set demands.

Another Bible. Amazing viral world
It covers all fields of virology. Perfect and wonderful ! Easy to understand. I really recommend this book to who is involved in biology

Straightforward guide to improving your GMAT CAT scores.
ARCO's guide for taking the GMAT CAT is very thorough and well-written, although it lacks the humor and "chatty" attitude some other lines of study guides are well known for. My only true complaint about this book is that it does not offer any interpretation of the scores you achieve on the practice tests -- you know what you've missed and why, but you have no way of correlating your performance to true GMAT scores. Sort of a bummer...

Great study guide and practice tests.
The Software accompanying this book was the closest ( other than Poweprep from ETS ) that I got to the actual test, as far as the look and feel. Content-wise, it does have some tough math, but overall, it gave me consistent scores which matched almost exactly to my actual GMAT. Make sure to go through the book before you jump to the tests. Improved my score by at least 80-90. With this book , PowerPrep and some tester practice from Princeton Review, I jumped from an initial 570 to 660. Worth every penny.

I love their attitude,I want to read it in English!
I'm reading this book in Chinese,I love it! Our teachers never told me about it, they just teached us what is 'right'.

Great Intro to American Politics Textbook
Excellent intro to politics text. I highly recommend it for a classroom or for anyone really who wants to sit down with a plain-spoken piece to get you to understand our government. Whether it is for someone with little knowledge as to who this vast bureaucracy works, or for someone with a fairly good knowledge of it all - I don't think it will disappoint.
I think what I appreciated the most was the honesty that the text was written. The authors also included a good amount of humor to emphasize the point (in cartoon, comic, Top 10 List, etc), in order to keep a reader interested.
I think this text is also a good reference as well, as there are numerous court cases and explicit examples of gov't at work - that if you are ever at a loss for "what was it that happened?" or "what does that term mean?" Things are extremely easy to find and be referred to.
Good works.
