A great taste of one of Japan's master's, Mori Ogai.
David Dilworth presents the reader with a great compilation of short stories of, arguably, Japan's best author. Each story is masterly crafted with meticulous attention paid to historical detail, and each story is well prefaced, explaining Ogai's philosophic and aesthetic intentions. Either Dilworth or a collegue has made first rate translations in this edition. I would reccomend this book to both the scholar of Japanese literature and those who have only a nodding acquaintance with Ogai.

Homer's masterpiece
This edition, in the original Greek, contains half of the Iliad and is followed by several other volumes, which contain the second half of the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Homeric Hymns.

The Iliad centers around the anger of the warrior Achilles when Agammenon unjustly takes his concubine. Achilles subsequently refuses to fight, and, because his divine strength makes him indispensible to the Greek war effort, the Greeks are nearly driven from the Trojan shores.

Reading this book in the original language makes a big difference. Homer is a master of both sound and sense and to read him in translation deprives the reader of the former.

The lack of commentary and vocabulary in this edition does not make it the best choice for beginners in Greek.

Terrific Book from a National Leader in Group Empowerment
Just plain terrific. David Straus's second book is useful for anyone involved in groups, whether at work, at home, or in the community-- and isn't that all of us? He covers it all-- from very basic details such as how to arrange the furniture in your meeting room, to how to effect the most sophisticated interchanges between participants at the highest levels of authority. Whether you're in business, education, government,or consulting, you'll learn from Straus. He has worked with a wide range of clients, from Ford Motors and the E.P.A. to the City of Denver and the Boston public schools. Throughout the book, his warm personality, absolute candor, and wealth of anecdotes make his principles easy to understand and absorb. A really valuable book from a national leader in group empowerment.

Incentives in Soil Conservation
Land degradation is now recognized as a major environmental problem and, globally, millions of dollars are now being spent annually on soil and water conservation programs. Many success stories can be found among these programs but, overall, progress has been slow and there have been many failures. there is an apparent reluctance of landusers to adopt conservation-effective practices, and it is usually not clear why practices that have appeared so promising in trials have not been accepted by them, or have been rejected after a short time. Attention has therefore turned to the landusers themselves, rather than the technology. Landusers are now much more involved in the process of identifying the problems, developing practical solutions and applying the necessary measures in the field. The International Workshop on Soil Conservation Extension: Concepts, Strategies, Implementation and Adoption, held in Chiang Mai in June 1995, looked at how soil conservation programs were being presented in the field and what were the problems. It appeared that although progress is being made in many ways, there was one major shortcoming: even where extension services are effective in fully involving landusers in the process of problem identification and the development of acceptable solutions, progress may still be very slow. The reason for this is that landusers may simply not be able to change their practices because eof economic, social or political reasons that are beyond their control. To overcome this problem, programs have been using a variety of incentives and over the years a wide range has been developed and used. Because of the need to examine incentives more closely and to discover which incentives will work and under what circumstances, the editors, on behalf of the World Association of Soil and Water Conservation, invited workers in this field to contribute to the present book. It contains a variety of articles that explore many aspects of the use of incentives in soil conservation programs. The book gives a clear understanding of the subject and also provides guidance to those involved in the development and implementation of soil conservation programs. An interesting addition to books on soil conservation!

A day by day look at Thoreau
"Oct. 22nd, 1837. 'What are you doing now?' he asked, 'Do you keep a journal?'-- So I make my first entry today." Thus begins Thoreau's Journal, made up of more then two million words and covering about twenty-five years of his life. No other work of Thoreau's better exhibits his discipline as a writer and his devotion to the natural world. In the Journal can be found the fragmented foundations of masterpieces such as Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine Woods, and Cape Cod. But what is perhaps more interesting to a reader of Thoreau's Journal are his thoughts and insights on topics such as friendship, love, religion, nature, bravery, heroism, war, slavery, the art of writing, and, most important to Thoreau, the art of living. Anyone with any interest in Thoreau will find his Journal to be an invaluable aid in understanding and following the life of one of America's most profound prose writers

Listening to the Music of the Spirit: The Art of Discernment

A Competent, Thorough, & Readable, Treatment of Discernment
Since Vatican II Catholics, guided more by the Spirit than law, have had special need for discernment. Fortunately, as Lonsdale points out, they have also moved from devotional piety to the Scripture and personal prayer that provide tools for discernment. Lonsdale sketches the global, social, cultural, ecclesial, historical and religious contexts of personal and group discernment, and analyzes sensitively and thoroughly its many and various elements and techniques, its intellectual and affective dimensions, the roles of consolation, desolation, and desires, and the obstacles to any form of discernment. He is deeply rooted in and draws heavily upon the spirituality of Ignatius Loyola, and writes with wisdom, clarity, and literary grace. One useful addition to the text, however, would be a treatment of an element of discernment found in Ignatius's Spiritual Journal and in the First Deliberation of Ignatius and his followers that persuaded them to form a religious order: the options should be considered separately (even on alternate days), and in group discernment the group should seek in unison first the reasons for one choice then later the reasons for the other. This technique maximizes individual openness to the force of each argument and objection, and minimizes conflict. Two insights in his last chapter are especially good: that Jesuit spirituality may be rooted in the individuality of the desert spirituality explained by John Cassian, and that Ignatian discernment unites the intellectual, institutional Catholic tradition with the affective, personal Protestant tradition. Some books you hand on to friends, libraries or charities; this one is a keeper.
