Happy Times
I must have read this book, to my niece over 100 times. When we read this book Alfie comes to life, like when the time Alfie gets in first,we wondered how he would let his mum and little sister in as he was too small to reach the door latch, and also Alfie's new shoes was a great adventure for us as my niece once said just before falling asleep I don't want new shoes either I think alfie should keep his old ones because if he gets new ones they wont be able to walk him home and he might get lost. Little annie rose also makes the story complete as it showed us the real life adventures brothers and sisters can have. It is a great book and katie and I would recomend every child has one.Katie and I first started reading this book when she was two and now at the age of seven when I go to visit her she reads it to me.This book is full of love, adventures and and real family values and has given us hours of fun.All i have left to say is thank you Alfie and thank you Shirley Hughes.

my toddler loves this book
My 2-year-old daughter LOVES this book. I've been reading it 3-4 times a day for the last two weeks. Frankly, I don't think the book is exceptional but she certainly does! She even "reads" it by herself.

Alife's Feet
What a shame this book is out of print. My 2 year old son loves this book. The illustrations are wonderfull the busy shoe shop and the cosy kitchen where Dad is making tea. Its the perfect rainy day book. My son always wants to go and put on his yellow boots just like Alfie and go out and jump in the puddles. SPLISH, SPLASH, SPLOSH

Great Resource
What a great resource! I borrowed this book from a collegue and immediately went to try and get one for myself. It is packed with ideas that are cross curricular, perfect for todays educational push to integrate curriculum. It also incorporates ideas that touch on different learning styles and mulitple intelligences. I'm a beginning Pre-K teacher and I immediately began using these ideas. I love the letter raps and so do my students!

A great book on Anabaptist churches in the US.
The authors have done excellent research on almost all anabaptist churches in the US, from the far right to the far left. Good summaries of each group, with church locations, membership numbers, and ranking within the anabaptist groups are included. The authors are perhaps a little bent towards the "transformational" groups, which are on the other end from the "traditional" groups. Positive points of each church group are identified, which help us to learn from each other. The Apostolic Christian Church of America is also included.

Some hell of a ride
Admittedly this might sound like straining an old blurb cliché, but John Shirley's latest novel really IS a tour de force on the darker side of literature (dark but not without humor). It's one of those rare books so crammed with astonishing images, bizarre scenes and brilliantly written passages (some of them just begging to be read out loud) that it leaves you breathless and absolutely satisfied. On a stylistic level the author has combined the neo-baroque images of his earlier works with the condensed, razor-sharp language of his more recent fiction. Shirley always writes on the edge of reality but with such a controlled and experienced voice that he can make the most weirdest things seem natural and plausible. His menagerie of oddities is described as vivid as if the author has personally met the hybrids of ancient mythology and industrial materials which populate his novel: the vinyl harpies, Thanatos, the angel with television eyes and all the others. And if you think that the Weaver from China Miéville's "Perdido Street Station" was a strange fellow, wait until you meet Vega, the discoball guy who overdoses on e-guitar chords.
"...And the Angel with Television Eyes" has an unbelievably fast-paced plot, some cool narrative gimmicks (just look at the chapter titles) and also profits from its author's insider knowledge of the media business. Definitely some hell of a ride.

I only read a few paragraphs and I was hooked. It's a fantastic adventure story by an 'ordinary' guy. He frequently gets the wrong end of the stick (and thanks to editor's notes you'll be able to tell when), but his warmth and humanity always show through.
This is less a story about Inuits than it is about a man who finds himself in an alien culture and a harsh environment. The narrative is often funny, always entertaining, and occasionally moved me to tears.
