One of the best books i have ever read
I think this book was the greates book i have ever read. You can not put down the book.
it is about a boy named tree (because he does not know his own name) lives at the orphange for the first 12 years of his life. He went to live with mr., mrs., and jake gunderson. mr gunderson does not like tree because he is not like his own son gus. mr gunderson acts like tree is not a good boy. so he thinks tree is the worst "son" that a preson could ever have.
When tree was about to go back to the orphange, his little brother acron comes along.
I can not tell you the rest of the story because it might ruin the ending but i really recomend that you should read this book.
DO you think Tree and his little brother will find a home with the gonderson, ro not. If you want to find out what happenes read the book

Great Story!
Jake's Orphan was a excellent book! I'm 15 years old and idon't read every book that comes across like my sister. But this bookwas a great book i was HOOKED to it! I couldn't put it down! I couldread this book over and over and never get tired of it!

Universal Story
Peggy Brooke has created a story for children and young adultsthat people of all ages will enjoy for its true to life emotions andrelationships. The book is true to the time, true to the circumstances, and unlike so many literary efforts, concludes with a sense of closure that is at once poignant, but also very believable. The story is set in 1926, but the historical setting shouldn't throw readers disinterested in period fiction. Its themes are timeless and could speak very well to today's youth about the power of peer pressure, the value of hard work and family, and the beauty of selfless acts of love. I was most impressed by Peggy Brooke's ability to realistically portray the gut-wrenching struggles of conscience within her main character, Tree, and his sheer terror at the possibility of his brother destroying everything he has worked so hard to attain. Just as young people today might feel trapped by circumstance and worry there is no way out of a predicament, Tree's struggle illustrates there are always alternatives, always a chance for redemption.

MONTOYA: MASTER OF CLASSIC ELEGANCE
This masterful book is one of the very best design books out today. the fabulous photos give richly detailed images of how the mind of Montoya turns dreams into reality. Colorfully planned rooms evoke reverence for things past and present. Montoya's use of religious references inform us of his link with humanity. Indirect lighting mixed with many different kinds of stone, granite, marbles and limestone create theatrical yet uplifing interiors that make beckon us to linger. Always sensitive to his clients' desires and wishes, he incorporates scale, harmony and balance while implementing function with style. Montoya is a master of surprise, you'll go back to this collection of his work time and again.

Design excellence captured in print.
This 400 page pictorial of Juan Montoya's work, past and present, is an engaging look at the designer's commitment to creating living spaces with flair, refinement, and cultural aesthetic.

Juan Montoya reveals the inspirations for his designs - both furniture and interior design - coming from a broad range of technology; to foreign cultural artifacts that are used to enrich and enhance spaces.

The spaces he creates are magnificent - a miriad of textures and colors that blend harmoniously into a defined living space - which the self titled book reveals quite well. Large color images enable you to study subtle details of the various rooms. This book also gives you a certain time line of his experience and influences during recent decades. Much of the text is reprinted from Architectural Digest, among other periodicals and books. Not to miss is the spread that displays the custom furniture designs that have been created, and used in various client's residences and office spaces.

This is a great addition to anyone's design collection. Definately a keeper, as well as a great design resource.

a splendid collection!
julia margaret cameron's women contains 63 different plates representing magnificent victorian portraits photographed back in 1864 to 1874. every plates are monochromed in sepia or black & white. ...5 pages are consacrated to her models biographies, her favorite ones like: julia prinsep jackson (mother of virginia woolf & painter vanessa bell), mary ann hillier (her maid, cameron described her as one of the most beautiful & constant of her models.) , Alice Pleasance Liddell (aka the little girl from whom Lewis Caroll wrote "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" in 1865)..etc.. - 5 other pages focuses on cameron's Literary & mythological subjects:from "DAPHNE" (nymph pursued by the god Apollo) to "OPHELIA" (from shakespeare's "Hamlet")..all are well explained and presented...the rest of the 242 pages are dedicated to margaret's life, her debuts, her Illustrations to tennyson's "Idylls of the king", her different relations... - all fans of painting & photography should own this book! it is a unique reference! cameron was and still is one of the greatest portrait photographers of all time...

other interesting books in this genre: "Reflections in a looking Glass" a centennial celebration of Lewis carroll. , "Photo Historica" landmarks in photography , "a new history of photography" edited by michel frizot.

An Often missed Pre-Raphaelite Vision
This amazing book is well worth the investment. These photos still have the power to knock one over the head with their dizzying beauty. Too often people look to the men who made up the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood for an ideal of the Victorian woman. For a fresh look, one should explore Victoriana through the eyes of the women themselves. Cameron's photography is the perfect counterpart to Christina Rosetti's poetry. Enjoy.

Not merely an expensive coffee table book.
Most photographs here were made in ca. 1870. Looking through the book, I imagine that at that time photography was still so new, so unprecedented, that no one yet had idea of what portrait photography was to become. An art? Or a detailed recording of what the eye perceives? In this ambiguity, Julia Margaret Cameron shows herself in this volume to be great artist, a portrait photographer second to none. In the faces of her women, I can see stories and history as recorded nowhere else.

Most notable is the series of images of Julia Jackson. (She also appears on the front and back covers.) One can see her life evolve over the time span of the photos. These images become even more interesting upon learning she was mother of Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf. So here at last is the real Mrs. Ramsey.

Excellent for a Bible lesson, too!
This book is a "must have" for your child's collection! Not only is this heroic account a wonderful piece of history, but it is also a very good lesson on the power of prayer. I read it to my 1st-3rd grade Bible class along with scriptures on prayer. My students' attention didn't waver for a moment while I read this book to them.

In the story, Kate's mother at first begs her not to attempt to rescue those in a train wreck. Rather than disobey her mother, 15-year-old Kate reasons with her and obtains her permission to go. Her widowed mother promises that their family will be praying for her. Kate then risks her life to save many others. When a tree in the flood waters is just about to collide with the bridge Kate is on, she prays and it is suddenly pulled under the water. Do you suppose Kate succeeds in her mission to save over 200 people? Read this book. You won't be sorry!

Kate Shelly and the Midnight Express
The pictures went along very well with the story. That was a good idea to make the book because it is good to write stories about the past, living in the country and saving people. The book was very good, a little hard, but it was a good story. I understood it very well. My teacher was talking about it. She said it was before WW1.

True story of a young girl who prevented a train wreck
This is a wonderful story about a real-life girl whose personal heroism stopped a train from wrecking on a collapsed bridge. This story was profiled on PBS's "Reading Rainbow" program, hosted by Levar Burton. Actor Brian Dennehy narrated the version on PBS. Kate Shelley was a young girl who lived in a small Iowa farmhouse. Near the house, a railroad line crossed a stream called Honey Creek. One night, there was a terrible storm. Kate and her family heard an engine moving on the line to check the bridge -- but then the bridge collapsed, the engine went down, and the Midnight Express was coming! Kate had to make it to the nearest station, but that was across another bridge.... You will have to read the book to find out the rest for yourself. You and your children will love this book!!

For the subject it doesn't get any better
When I found myself having to cook up food for large groups, I found this book invaluable. The book is well laid out, gives easy to follow conversions, and the recipes turn out well. The book has a wide variety so you are able to use this book for many different meals. Best of all the recipes turn out very well. I was able to use this book in helping me scale up other recipes as well. This is a definate must if you do large scale cooking!

Bulk Preparation at it's best!
This cookbook is an invaluable resource for my catering department as well as a basis for recipes for my culinary class. They are easy to follow and have both Metric and U.S. measurements for ease of conversions.

Since purchasing this book, I've enjoyed preparing many epicurean delights from within it's pages. I've been able to provide nutritious, eye pleasing meals for over 300 along with scaling several recipes down to meet the dietary needs of only 20 to 30 guests.

Cooking in bulk is a snap with this book, because it takes the guesswork out of the kitchen!

A thorough, easy to read and easy to follow cookbook.
The recipes in this cookbook are all prepared in quantities of 50. It contains both US Standard and Metric weights and measures. The dishes are basic and easy to prepare. This is very important when you are dealing with feeding a large number of people. I have personally used many recipes from this book to serve over 200 people. All the dishes were well received. They turned out exactly as they should and the cookbook even has additional information to aid in figuring how much of each ingredient to buy. When it comes to cooking in bulk, this book is - hands downs - my favorite.

Couldn't put it down
I travel for a living- and I was up early on a Monday (4am) and wanted to sleep on the plane. I started to read this book and did not put it down until I was finished- from Minneapolis to San Francisco. What a story about a woman's child-like faith in God. This is a well-written book that clearly displays the true works of God through His faithful people. A MUST read.

One of the Best
The book Lena is one of the best I have ever read. I wish I could have known Lena. I have met the author. She's a wonderful womam.

Lena
A must read book for mothers of sons who are not "goody two-shoes." What a surprise this book was to me. The title and cover prove the axiom that you can't judge a book by its cover. I expected a story about a "little old lady" and instead found a wealth of information, inspiration, comfort and wisdom when faced with a prodigal son who had not yet come home. Readers will laugh and cry and praise God all in the same chapter. You will not want to put it down.

A toddler must have!
This has been my 3-year-old's favorite bedtime (and morning time, and afternoon time...) book since he was 2. The soothing rhymes are so relaxing. Beautifully illustrated. We've had the copy from our church library for so long we decided we needed to invest in our own. If you like Goodnight Moon, you'll love Little Donkey. If you don't care for Goodnight Moon, you'll love Little Donkey. A wonderful investment!

Love it, love it, love it
The sweet illustrations are nice and the wonderful rythym of this story is absolutely the best. It has a rhyming text that is peaceful and tranquil and the most wonderful thing to read your little ones (and maybe big ones) to sleep with. We love it.

A must for the 'go to sleep' library!
I love reading this book to my niece (age 3) and nephew (age 1) at bedtime--it's on their 'most requested' list! The illustrations are very beautiful and peaceful and the overall themes of love and security are just what children (and adults) need in this wild world! The soft sounds in the text of the story are very dreamy and sleep inducing. Lovely!

A favorite for generations
My parents enjoyed reading this book to me and my brother almost 50 years ago. Now I am thrilled when my two kids ask me to "read it again Dad!" Margaret Wise Brown bent the norm when she wrote this book. Mister Dog, aka Crispin Crispian, lives a great life and shares it willingly with rabbits, cats, other dogs, and a charming little boy. Brown was indeed wise to ask Garth Williams to do the illustrations because they illuminate the book, as well as the room in which you may be sitting to read the book, with warmth, delight, and amusement. If only this classic could be re-printed . . . more families could cuddle up to this tale of play and cooperation.

Mister Dog
I've had Mister Dog since i was a baby and loved it and still do. Unfortunately I've come to believe that i have the last remaining copy and its missing the back cover and have been hoping to get another copy. It is a great book, it gives great advice, the last page is brilliant.

Mister Dog, The Dog Who Belonged to Himself. That's it!
One of the most whimsical, quirky, endlessly entertaining (for the parents as well as the kids) books I've found (this one at a yard sale). Politically incorrect, Mister Dog lives in a 2-story doghouse, eats strawberries, walks himself, and smokes a corncob pipe. He meets and adopts a little boy who also belongs to himself, and the two independent souls begin to live together cooperatively and happily. Indescribably charming. One of Ms.Brown's best, and should be revived for all of us jaded parents who have to read the same story over and over again. This one holds up and makes us smile every time.

Why did bad things happen to me?
Why did my proposal fail? Why did my department implode? Why was I assigned to a doomed project?

Finally - a USEFUL framework to accomplish goals in an organization! The beauty of this 'ABC Model' lies in its universal applicability and the fact that - IT WORKS!

With this tool, one can analyze their own personal situation within an organization to unveil the complex and often invisible interactions, motivations, churnings, characters and power factors that drive organizational action.

In ideal organizations, one would not have to use this sort of strategy. But, nevertheless, even though our organizational charts might be flat, our titles wiped clean and our formerly stringent bureaucracies eliminated - PEOPLE still wield power in organizations and power still matters.

Get power and use it!
This book teaches you how to obtain power in your organization and use it effectively to your advantage. Great use of examples throughout the book. This will help you understand why things happen in your company, who has power, and why. I have used it and successfully achieved an agenda of ambitious change that previously stalled.

Indispensable to Managers and Academixs
This work addresses two of the most pressing issues by introducing a model useful for both academics and management practitioners. The ABC model provides an extraordinary and rational framework for analyzing organizational problems and reaching a solution.

For practitioners especially, this provides THE key to POWER and MANIPULATION- applicable in all organization types and all situations. From e-business, to non-profits, to government, whatever complex situation you face, by utilizing this model, you may obtain what you truly want.

For academics, this provides an analytical framework for an area of study previously characterized by the same fuzziness and unpredictability that pervades human (and management) behavior.

I have utilized this in my organization and have been able to manipulate many factors into my favor. This should be an indispensable element in any manager or aspiring executive's career development.

Move over John Grisham!
I was haunted by the main character Margaret Cape. As a southerner reading a story set in the south, every word was believable and real to me. I don't understand why Wylene Dunbar was not heralded and made famous by this novel. She is as good a story teller as Grisham, Welty and other Mississippi authors who already have their fame! Books like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and many by Anne Rivers Siddons came to mind when I read this intriguing tale.

Winner, 1998 Mississippi Institute of Arts & Letters award
This is a wonderful book, so it came as no surprise that MARGARET CAPE received this year's Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters fiction award, beating out nine other nominated books by top novelists in a state known for its writers. In his note describing Dunbar's award, Bob Summer (southern correspondent, Publishers Weekly) said that "[Dunbar's] stellar achievement is piercing the inner life of a searingly memorable woman in prose often simmering with sheer beauty."

Great story and well told--should get a book award!
This is a superbly crafted and intricate story of generations, social conventions, prejudices, power, gender roles, and the thin veneer of gentility in the South. But don't mistakenly believe this is just another Southern novel. Dunbar's Margaret Cape is a most unusual protagonist who follows a highly unconventional path to discover and complete her own "story." There is enough psychological brutality, love, conflict, death, sex, and legal battles in this book to satisfy most "beach book" readers, and at the same time those looking for a more "literary" work will be impressed. The unusual plot turns, surprises, and strangeness are quite plausible because Dunbar recreates a world (the context of the South, the changes in the decades from the 1920's to the 1990's, the fragility of the human mind) that allows us to accept them as real. I'd be surprised if this novel doesn't get nominated for one of the book awards
