After all these years...
When I was in elementary school, this book was in the library and became my favorite children's book. Have you ever had things happen in your house that you can't explain? Many think they have ghosts, but perhaps there is a Grumpus in your home. A small boy is accused of the messes that are in the house and punished by his mother when he told her that a Grumpus did it. An adorable book with great pictures and realistic themes of parent and child interaction. I highly recommend this book to your child's collection.

The Grumpus excuse
This was my son's favorite book when he was a child. I read it over and over to him. The Grumpus is a wonderful character, very impish and fun loving. Incidently my son never did any of the things the Grumpus did , or that was his excuse. He is in college now and still remembers this fun loving book.

Grumpus Under the Rug
A wonderful, mischievous picture and story book to read to small children

Wonderful Story!
I have had this book since 1969 when I was 6 years old. It is a treasured part of my childhood! It tells the story of a lovable dog Harry and his family spending an eventful day at the beach. Children and adults alike will love this cuddly tale.

An adorable dog, kids, beach, adventure. 'nuff said!
This book instantly became a bedtime favorite with each of my kids (boy and girl). Harry is adorable, and just enough mischief and adventure (and smelly seaweed!) to keep the little one's attention, and to keep young readers turning the pages. You'll love it too.

Highly recommend this book!
This was my favorite book as a child. Great story and fun pictures.

EXCELLENT
For first time mothers, this book gave me what I needed. You will find everything you need in this book. I really enjoyed reading every page, and it has been passed along to other sisters out there who are having a baby. ONCE AGAIN EXCELLENT.

Essential for 1st Pregnancy
This book was given to me by a good friend, and it is the best thing she could have given to me. I found the book to be very informative and answered ALL questions I could ever ask about being pregnant. I even found myself referring back to the book with my second child, pregnant again about a year and a half later. I am here today writing this review, because I want to email this page to my cousin who is now pregnant. I promised her I would find it online and told her to make sure she purchase and read this book....Excellent

Excellent white or black
I really liked the book. It was informative where the others where not. I just don't understand why it is focused on black women. Everything I read applies to any expected mother.

Timely, concise,practical,small well-organized book .
Home Maid Spanish has been the bible of bi-linqual housekeeping. It can not cost that much to produce..if nothing else..copy it onto web pages..but get it into circulation some way!! It is a coloquial dictionary of household terms in the Latin-American vernacular...youa can use it in many contexts not just for housework and child care! You are conversant in everyday Spanish when you have this light, convenient format to use in it's nice orange paperback cover. The one I had was hand-typed..only about 20 pages..Oh, how I miss it for my friends and offspring..I have to keep translating for them...

I highly recommend this quick reference book to my clients.
As owner of NANNYKINS Domestic Referral Service a nanny/housekeeping referral service in Houston, Tx. I found this book to be the most valuable quick reference guide second to none. Since I place many spanish speaking nannies in english only homes I have recommended it because of its illustrations, brevity, and because it doesn't take longer that 10 second to find what you want, if that long. I would buy this book by the case so that I could give it to my clients if it were available. Quick reference, easy to use and priced right. Please, please, please, reprint this book.

Indispensable
It is the best because of the kind ways it instructs someone else in the art of taking care of the home as you would like. It needs to become available again. Most persons don't know what they are missing by not being able to get this book. What can I do to convince someone to re-print this book?

Easiest I have found
This little booklet is the easiest overview of simple parliamentary procedure I have found. I use it in my public speaking class for the students to have a handbook and reference guide for class meetings and discussions. Recently, our administrator put this to use for teaching all student body officers to use in their class and organizational meetings. It is so easy to use--you just can't lose.

Parliamentary Proceduare questions answered
This book has been used in American schools since 1953. It explains HOW to conduct meetings and answers questions usually asked about proper procedure. It is just as popular today as it was when first written in 1953 for high school clubs. Revised 2000

The Human Condition

bios politikos
Most of the most contentious contemporary issues, like abortion, euthanasia and healthcare, welfare, tobacco, and suchlike, concern the problem of life. The argument can be made, and Arendt makes it, that the modern state, in its care for life, has moved from the power over death (capital punishment) to the power over life. It is Arendt's purpose to show that modern politics, in its absorption the public by the private, turns politics into economics (the household), where formerly the care of "life" was located. In a world in which there is neither the immortality of the state nor the individual, bare life becomes the highest value. (Strauss makes the argument that a politics that begins in the state of nature leads directly to "humanitarianism," to a politics devoted to eliminating suffering, and the argument is the same.) A politics devoted to life leaves no "space" (a decidedly unGreek word, used again and again by Arendt and every hip business exec today) for politics, for the play of concealment and disclosure, darkness and light, bright shining words and the privacy and darkness of pain, defecation, eating, love, etc. It is Heidegger put to good use, and Arendt reminds us that the elimination of the politics, or its suppression, is inseparable from a Seinsvergessenheit, but the real life-and-death issue is better grasped by Schmitt and Strauss, who do not fall into the trap of aestheticizing politics.

come one, come all
this book starts off with a breathtaking reflections on the launch of the sputnik. arendt seemingly places us before the launch as witness, evoking the kind of awe, wonderment, fear and anxiety that must arise from such a sight. the prologue is amazing.

i could easily come up with at least a dozen potential research projects from this book that arendt just touches on the surface. (as is the case with arendt's philosophy, it is, at its best, always very suggestive but, at its worst, she never follows through on the initial offering.)

and arendt considered this book as her response to the influence of heidegger; i think that this is a most correct assessment. in fact, this is the great heidegger-book that heidegger himself never could have written. in my view, the latter heidegger pales in comparison (on subjects such as technology, poetry, speech, and history, arendt tops her former mentor). heidgger was truely out-foxed by this book.

i suspect that even the amateur (defined here as the lover of an entity-x) will find much in this book to make this a life-changing experience. in philosophy we often talk of such 'life-changing' books but they are really few in number. this is one such book.

be on the look out for the moment where the discussion of nietzsche's conception of the promise effortlessly morphs into the birth of christ as a miracle. (note: for arendt, the miracle isn't christ but the birth itself, for that matter any birth).

full of grace, this book will be devastating and ultimately redeeming.

A new possibility for social action and entrepreneurism
Hannah Arendt makes the case that what distinguishes human beings is that they are constantly making new beginnings. This leads her to theories of social action that have implications for our self esteem, our "making of ourselves" and how we influence and participate in social action.

She reveals the implications of this inherent tendency to "make new beginnings" in the uncertainty of outcomes of our action. What we start we cannot know the outcome of beforehand. That is, in significant part, because those who come along after we start something will add or change with their own capacity for making new beginnings.

This says we need social attributes of foregiveness. She also develops the importance of promising in a culture so that we can create some certainty by this social action.

She is writing about social action and involvement in the broad social life. But she could as easily be writing about entrepreneurship and corporate life or any any other social activity.

A stimulating book indeed!

Human all the way
This is a wonderful book. It is fun to read, and it also takes you gently but firmly into a place you probably thought you wanted to avoid. The magic is that, despite your fears, you will be glad you had a chance to go there (through this book), and the visit will live on in your life. I sent a copy to a family member who is a nurse working with desperately ill children. She told me she found a lot of her experiences reflected in these stories. Life. The ability to connect deeply with individuals, whether they are old or young, and bring their stories to life in words is a very great gift indeed.

a friend's viewpoint
Mary Margaret is one of the best persons I know. She writes beautifully, her prose reads like poetry. She's a chaplain, a soccer player, a little girl, a grown woman. She's funny and warm, and that comes through in her book. I could not recommend this book more highly, for anyone interested in the human condition, or in spirituality in general.

A Mama's Viewpoint
Besides being amazed at the rare balance of humor and wisdom being expressed by my offspring, I can distance myself to see professionally this book is a rare creation that will be cherished by the family members and those who endeavor to interpret Alzheimer's Disease. My husband is an Alzheimer's patient in a nursing home. Having heard Mary Margaret present some of these stories and talk about relating to persons with memory loss, I am able to better relate not only to her step-father but the other members of the community as I visit. Other librarians tell me the book is well received by family member who need inspiration with the hard facts of this disease.

A Good Meditation Starter
This beautifully written book is a series of personal reflections and imaginative meditations that focus on the "First Week" (i.e., section) of St. Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises, during which retreatants traditionally focus on the workings of sin and grace in their lives. As such it serves as a good, practical introduction to many basic concepts of Ignatian spirituality such as consolation and desolation, detachment, and our deepest desire.

The strengths of the book are its lovely style, the honesty of the author's personal examples, and the creativity and depth of "Suggestions for Prayer and Discussion" that are posed at the end of each chapter. The latter clearly come from a wealth of retreat experience.

In the introduction, Silf modestly writes that her book "is not a way of actually making the Exercises." While that is technically true, many readers may feel they have begun to do so.

Best Ever Presentation of Ignatian Spirtuality
With all due respect to the many fine Jesuit Fathers I have known in my life, it took a non-Jesuit named Margaret Silf to deliver the finest explanation of Ignatian Spirituality I have ever read. Silf delivers first a touching and thorough biography of Ignatius, then uses it as a backdrop for how he came to understand God. She leads us through the Exercises with genuine faith, terse explanation, and wonderful anecdotes that rate her as a superb spiritual director. Every spriritual person, not to mention Jesuits themselves, would be well advised to own their own copy of this masterpiece. A must read for all!

Recommended reading for truth seekers in search of God.
In today's often confusing secular society, men and women look for enduring, practical, and insightful spiritual guidance. Margaret Silf's Inner Compass is an introduction and invitation to Ignatian spirituality as practiced and taught by the Jesuits these past four hundred years. St. Ignatius of Loyola taught that paying attention to the deepest desire burning within us will enable us to discover God, and how God has gifted us for our life in the world. Inner Compass presents the magnificent possibility of self-trust. By learning to trust ourselves, we learn to trust God. Inner Compass offers the reader an abundance of practical examples and methods to find true self-knowledge and build just such a trust, thereby discovering a genuine meaning to our lives. Inner Compass is highly recommended reading for students of religion and seekers of a personal spirituality and relationship with God.

Uncovering the obvious
Is There An Elephant In The Copy Room? is a wonderful look at life in the workplace. It is written in a simple to read and easy to relate to format. With each senario that I read I found myself thinking "I've been through that" or "I know that person". This book offers great insight as to what all parties are thinking in certain situations and also provides reasonable solutions to the challenges we face in the workplace. As a person who has been in top management and dealt with a number of personnel issues and someone that is currently in the job market I found the different perspectives very enlightening. I highly recommend this book.

Essential for spotting elephants!
This book was introduced to me at my workplace as my team was being formed. Not only has it made me aware of the elephants that are lurking, but I believe it helped prevent others from making it through the door.

The book is written in such a way that everyone in business can relate - bosses, assistants, employees, managers - everyone! I love how the author addresses serious issues in a humourous way. It is almost like she has been right next door to me for years!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for insight and solutions to their business' elephants!

Is There an Elephant in the Copy Room
I think that this book is very applicable to real life work situations. After reading the scenarios, I could recall similar experiences that I encountered at work. This book helped me to see those situations from my boss's perspective. It also helped me to understand how to respond more successfully when I encounter such situations in the future. I think that Margaret must have been hiding in our office -- she knows what really goes on in the workplace!
