I picked this book up at the National Gallery of Art in Washinton DC in the summer of 1998. It's a beautiful collection of old French posters, programs and advertisements. A wonderful addition to a collection of either art or French history books!

This is one of the more unusual books on my shelves, in that physically it is designed to bear a resemblence on its exterior to some travel guides. The photograph above doesn't do it justice. The material is kivar-like, and his famous photograph of the entrance to the Moulin Rouge is tinted in red and yellow. Inside, the photographs are arranged thematically, according such topics as Salesman and Traders on the Streets of Paris, or Trades, Shops, and Window Displays, or interiors of Parisian homes, or, my favorite, Old Paris.

As the introduction of the book points out, Atget was the great photographic recorder of Old Paris. It is to Paris of the turn of the 19th to the 20th century what Weegee was to lower Manhattan. The pictures in this book are nothing short of remarkable, and to look at them for any length of time helps transport one, to the extent that that is possible, to a world that no longer exists. This is not beautiful, genteel Paris. It isn't the Paris of Proust. It is more the Paris of Baudelaire fifty years down the road, the Paris of Toulouse-Latrec.

This without any question the finest inexpensive edition of Atget's photographs currently available, and since Atget is the predominant photographer of the Paris of a hundred years ago, the best inexpensive book of photographs of Old Paris.

This book is a fabulous addition to my research library. The photographs of vendors and their wares; storefronts and their dressing; and people living their lives on the streets of Paris are invaluable to me as an opera set dresser and propmaster. The photographs are, of course, beautiful in their own right; and the text is informative, poetic, and interesting.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Paris for 2 weeks and we used this book tirelessly! The layout of the book was easy-to-use and the maps, tourist listings and recommendations were fantastic. We have loaned this book out three times in one year and each person has commented that the ease of use made the book so helpful.

You can tell that these recipes have been successful throughout a community. Some of the best cooks are from the South and from the church commuinity. Some of the recipes are simple yet elegant. Helpful hints on entertaining are a must. This book is for the experienced cook as well as the new bride or groom.

The Bears of Paris is a modern match for Dante's _Inferno_. The poems in this collection give us today's Man-in-the-city in the character of Fatslug dodging the slings and arrows of our fates, often pierced and wounded. Yet the poems reaffirm our essential humanity, the struggle to love and to be loved. While thoroughly rooted in our times, the poems also connect us with events from history, revealing the nature of suffering. Moore takes on the subject of evil and Man's inhumanity to man with Swiftian wit. Miles Moore has a deadly satiric eye for human failings, the interactions of daily life, intended and unintentional cruelties, and yet writes with much empathy of the consequent pain inflicted on the victims. Many of the poems such as "Two Men", "I love Barbie Taylor, T. Mc" and "Dead Boy in the Road at Fredericksburg" deserve to be included in anthologies of the best American poetry. "Dead Boy.." ends with this panoramic fade on the photograph from the Civil War: "Through the millenia the murdered march/ To someone else's tune and memory/ And through some other guy's triumphal arch./ You and they are no one. You're history./ Repeating rifles always bear repeating./ The silent beast that ate you keeps on eating."

This is a fascinating and satisfying collection with poetry that gives us much to ponder.

I found "Beggars in Paradise" to be a charming romp, both through the city of Paris and through the mindset of a man with nothing and everything to lose. Stettner's subtle comedy and moving descriptions made poverty seem worth trying for a while. Like "On the Road" and the travelogues of Bill Bryson, it inspires one to pick up and take off simply for the pleasure of finding the unexpected. "Beggars in Paradise" is the perfect book to accompany a traveler in France or to curl up with on a window seat overlooking a busy city. Its tranquility and intrigue will transport you to the underbelly of Paris and the simple glories found there.

I have lived in Paris for over two years, but this guide remains my favorite for restaurant ideas, bars, cafés, and days I just want to change my neighborhood. While prices are in francs, and some of the stuff about bar and club trends is a bit dated, it's still the best resource I've found besides word-of-mouth for how to see the City of Lights on a budget. The restaurant suggestions are especially well-chosen.

I just want to correct the previous review from a reader in Georgia (USA). The Spanish version is a different book with different cover and ISBN number. The ISBN for the English version is 2831563151 (pub. date May 1998) while the one for the Spanish version is 2831665634 (pub. date Oct. 1998).
