A Handy Explanation of Paris Attractions
This book has nice photos and detailed, easy to read explanations which place touristic sites of Paris in context. Detail on historical backround, which might be impossible to obtain in Paris for non-French speakers, is presented in this book. This book is also loaded with color photos of good quality. I am extremely glad I bought it.

Sensitive, Humorous and Fascinating
With a wit similar to Dorothy Parker, and a unique personality all her own, Pauline Avery Crawford was one the more interesting American women during World War II. Robertson does an excellent job atpresenting her spirit as well as her paranoia, and in drawing a complex portrait of a very strong-willed and brilliant woman. Highly recommended! Her poetry is not to be missed.

A wonderful walk through the streets of Paris!
Brian Morton takes you on a walk (with street-by-street maps) of Paris through the eyes and lives of famous Americans who lived, worked and loved in Paris. You can feel and live in your imagination their lives - through gossip, fact, or read between the lines - a wonderful vacation from my reading chair. . . I can't wait to visit Paris with this book in hand.

visions of light
If I could give it more stars, I would. Here we have a rare treat; a dynamic duo, a tremendous twosome. Eugene Achet, who some call the father of modern photography and who is arguably the greatest photographer of all time is teamed up with John Sarkowski, certainly one of the greatest curators, editors, and writers about photography of all time. This 3 volume set is absolutely stunning. It's at the very least a must see, if not a must buy, for anyone who is seriously interested in photography. I had a photo prof. who said this book was more important than the Bible for an artist. I'm not exactly sure wether this is a more profound statement about the spiritual state of artists or the importance of this book, but it was cool either way. The works in this particular volume are mostly urban landscape/architecture. To the modern eye they may seem slightly banal, but we have to keep in mind here that the reason they seem slightly common is that Achet is the source. Anything that looks even vaugely like this work came from Achet. There are very few of these later works, however, that are done with such mastry of light and composition as is constant in Achet's work . That man, more than just about anyone else, knew how to have his head in the right place at the right time. The whole collection is exquisitely selected arranged by John Sarkowski. This volume, this whole set in fact, is a true treasure.

Nostalgic walking tour of Paris
If you love Paris and it has been awhile since you have been there then, read this book. The author is knowledgeable, and his drwaings are as charming as your memories, It was handy to use as a reference, except there is no reference mechanism, you have to remember where you read the part you are interested in. Read it before you go to set yourself for the trip or after, again and again, to relive, the charm and beauty of that great city

Around and About Paris, Volume 2: From the Guillotine to the Bastille Opera (Arrondissements 8-12)
Published in Paperback by Iliad Books (1999)
Author: Thirza Vallois
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $39.95

Mrs Vallois is a queen - Feel as her invitee in Paris
Because Mrs Vallois has a love affair with Paris; because she devoted part of her life to this "cause", she is totally convincing. When you read her descriptions of hidden details on houses nobody noticed before, you understand that Mrs Vallois deserves the right to consider herself as co-owner of "the spirit of Paris". Because this "spirit" is something that was invented by the French to be shared with others, feel free to become a "courtisan". Mrs Vallois books are well documented (no need to say). It's like reading an architectural manual plus an history encyclopedia. All this while walking in charming places. I hope the next books will keep this knowledge embedded in a living style and that Thirza will add more illustrations. Buy this book. It will never look old-fashioned!
