Very helpful book...
This book was so helpful in finding great places to eat in Paris. We'd find ourselves in a different area of town either for lunch or dinner each day. Simply pull out the Out to Eat book and find the food or restaurant we wanted to visit. Fair warning on dress code or reservations. We didn't NEED this book, but it made the trip easier...

Bull's Eye Restaurant Guide
We recently visited Paris. We armed ourselves with this book as well as a few others for cross-referencing. The LP book was dead-on for each restaurant. Although we consider ourselves very picky and privileged eaters, we were 100% satisfied with our choices. The book was invaluable not only for food but for neighborhood and bar information.

School Reading actually had me hooked
If you have to read a book and are entering the 12th grade or beyond this is the one to read, it has suspense on every page and it's interesting, If i can read the whole thing anyone can, time passes by quickly when you read a good book and this is a great one trust me

Simenon's Reputation Has Nothing to Be Afraid Of
A small, quiet French village dominated by a sense of social status is well described in this novel by Georges Simenon. The book has an amazing sense of atmosphere, of believable characters and situations, of the dark world in the pouring rain in which the three victims die... The moral of the book is concerned with the social statuses of the characters, of how the normal people despise the aristocracy, how the aristocracy despise the aristocracy and the citizens. The book is, like all Simenon, well-written and believable, even in the most fantastic situations, dragging the reader onwards and onwards, unable to put the book down.

When Maigret meets a serial killer ...
When Maigret meets a serial killer, it's a dramatic face to face and, as usually, Maigret can understand why the killer acts in such an horrible way. Maigret don't excuse the killer but can understand. Like said Simenon : "Understand but not judge".

Great stuff, one of the best Maigrets
This is one of my very favorite Simenon novels; superbly paced and brilliant characterizations.

One again Simenon is a genious !
Another great Maigret's novel.

Splendid evocation of week-ends along the river (Seine) in the thirties. The atmosphere is close to the impressionism.

You have to read this novel !

One of the best Maigret's
One of the very finest novels among the phenomenon that is Maigret. As usual, Inspector Maigret solves a murder through empathy, by understanding the lives of the people involved in the case, but this time, the linchpin is an enigmatic Englishman, a man Maigret both likes and loathes, and, next to the great detective, one of the most fascinating inventions of Simenon. A superb and satisfying book for the fan or the first time Maigret reader.

excellent map
Just came back from a trip to France. I bought this in UK before going to Paris and very glad I did that. I drove through the streets in Paris and did not get lost once with this map. (which is amazing for me from past experiences) Easily found a gas station shown on the map when I need one.

One Of The Most Useful Maps Of Paris
This is a wonderful atlas which is helpful on many different levels. Useful for getting around in public transit and on foot. I love Paris and this atlas has helped me love it even more.

Moving, romantic, spellbinding
This is a wonderfully lyrical account of the life of a Penobscot woman who against great odds overcomes poverty and illness through her intelligence, love of beauty and dance and her connection to her Native American heritage. Her romance with a French Resistance-member journalist and her escape over the Alps with her infant daughter during World War II is spell-binding. I loved this book!

historically accurate as well as lively
As a middle school librarian in a county with two tribes, I am always looking for books that will model exellence for our young men and women. This is a fascinating read about a native American young woman in the early days of Hollywood. We can't afford this book yet, but it is one of three that top my list for next year's order. We have 180 feet of empty shelves.

Great book!
I was given this book as well as the second and third in the series (Mystery of the Magician and A Scent of Murder) as a birthday gift when I was eleven or twelve. I loved this series as I was very taken with the romaticism of it. It was very exciting to read about a sixteen year old American girl at the turn of the century, visiting France and solving crimes. I lost my originals long ago, and I recall that the books were not bound very well. Pages started to fall apart while I was reading them.

I work in a bookstore that deals in new books only so was unable to order these as they are (obviously) out of print. Imagine my happiness when I found 1-4 yesterday at a used bookstore, for 60% off of the cover price of $3.95. I came here to see if that was all of the series.

Very glad to have found these and surprised to find out what they're going for here, considering what I paid for them! The cover art is beautiful, and there are very nice pen & ink sketches peppering each book.

Would definitely recommend them for pre-teen girls...all of the elements of good reading for that age group. I'm enjoying re-reading them as well. :)

Scour the used sites/stores...you might get lucky.

My Name is Paris: Mystery of the Metro
I loved this book as a young teen, and I was hoping to let my children read it someday. Ms. Howard's descriptions of Paris were so real that I felt like I was the one solving the mystery with Paris. This book should be released again!

Rational Fitness
Since purchasing Bob Paris' book "Natural Fitness" about 10 weeks ago, I have gone through a lot of changes. I made progress toward my weight loss goal of 35 pounds (25 down, 10 to go) I totally changed my diet, built some muscle, and began to look inside to see the things that were driving me on and off a healthy lifestyle. This is what the book is all about: the whole packsage. Paris makes a point of saying that physical health without corresponding progress in mind, emotions, and spirit is a hollow shell. He also asks the reader to delve into his or her motives for fitness in the first place and see what lurks below the surface. It has been an awesome experience because I have been a "hot and cold" fitness buff forever. Well, I'm 47 now, and the "cold" side could have dire consequences for me, so I bought the book. I am so glad I did. This book has everything a person can need to change from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one. It offers tips on the whole person, food, meals, exercises, routines, etc... and challenges our (my) tendency to look for quick fixes for long term problems. This book is real. It is honest and detailed. It has gotten me so stoked that I'm going to buy Paris' "Flawless", the 10 week phyique transformation manual. I feel I'm ready for that one because "Natural Fitness" has prepared me physically and mentally.

Thoughtful advice on creating a healthy lifestyle
This book focuses on introspection and examining your own goals and reasons for becoming fit. Motivation and a balanced approach toward a maintainable fittness program are stressed. It has a slightly philosophical tone, if you like that kind of thing (which I do). After reading this book and applying some of the ideas, I now bike to work and home (30 mi) 3 times a week, I lift weights 3 times a week, and on weekends ... mountain biking and hiking! I have lost 20 pounds, and I feel better then I have in years.

As perfect as the paintings he discusses?
As a student of nineteenth century French painting, I think this may in fact be the finest book ever written on Parisian painting in the time of Haussmanization. Clark manages to offer an intelligent Marxist-based claim about class and the emerging Parisian landscape in the 60's without losing sight of the paintings themselves. While most scholars feel the genius of this book lies in his wonderful discussion of "what couldn't be seen in Olympia", I find the first chapter "Environs of Paris" equally fascinating in its discussion of Manet's Exposition Universelle of 1867. A MUST read for any lover of Parisian history or Manet.

An Art History Book For Anyone Interested in History
I like to think of myself as a person who is curious about a wide range of things, especially in the realm of culture and the arts. Most art history books, however, put me right to sleep, with their endless catalogs of curatorial details about brushstrokes and paint textures and influences and provenance. These detailed analyses almost never situate the paintings in any sort of context and almost never explain WHY we should be interested in these details, other than to prove ourselves worthy connoiseurs to others in the know. Clark's book is a refreshing change from such mandarin drivel. Clark begins with a lengthy discussion of the social context of the paintings he is about to discuss and only then proceeds to extended analyses of particular paintings. Clark is interested in the larger ideas and trends of the period and, most important of all, actually USES the details of the paintings as evidence in the course of making an ARGUMENT about what the paintings mean (hint to other art historians: having an argument contributes significantly to the interest of a book or article). In addition, Clark's argument about the nature of the social changes occuring in France in the 1860's and 70's is compelling and thought-provoking (be forewarned: some Marxism is involved). I found myself actually learning things about the paintings Clark discusses, and looking at them over and over again, trying to find more in them, in much the same way as I would go back to a book or a poem after reading a good piece of literary criticism. I think this book will appeal to anyone who wants to learn more about either 19th-century French painting or 19th-century France. Clark is a stimulating and perceptive guide to this crucial period in the history of painting. Bravo!
