The Rough Guide to Paris

My other favorite Paris guidebook
This is the best guidebook for Paris (in my opinion) for people who want hotel and restaurant recommendations and are interested in a bit of background history of the city. This book (and previous editions) have been my companions during several Paris trips over the past 13 years. This book introduced me to my favorite Paris restaurant, a place to which we return every time we are in town.

If I Could Only Buy One Guide Book for a Trip to Paris
I am a guide book and travel fanatic and I generally buy and read a number of guide books for whatever destination I have in mind. I am also a Paris-phile and have been to Paris 5 times in the past 13 years for both business and pleasure.

This book stands out as the best for my demographic, the professional age 20 - 40 crowd.

The book stands above other travel books particularly in its hotel, bar, club and restaurant recommendations and is worthwhile for these alone. It also provides some fantastic historical insight into Paris, particularly with regards to 20th century Parisian history.

It is printed on a pulpy paper and is very light, something to keep in mind if you are just packing a single bag and taking off to Paris for the weekend.

The Best Compact Guide to Paris
I'm a travel book fiend. It's an addiction - I admit it's not healthy, but that's life. So, for my recent trip to Paris and London, I think I bought 10 books. This was the only one I brought with me. I found the Rough Guide to Paris easy to read, helpful, compact, and insightful.

If - unlike me - you only plan to buy one book for your trip, make it this one.

The Whimsical Gourmet's Guide to Paris: The Non-Definitive Guide to Dining, Sightseeing, and Good Old Fashioned Mischief

Wonderful Guide
The Whimsical Gourmet's Guide to Paris is a wonderful way to discover the dining treasures of Paris, and you don't even have to leave your house! The book does a fabulous job of explaining the French mentality as it concerns food and dining habits. The list of restaurants is large enough to offer choices but small enough not to be overwhelming.

I found the book very funny (at times I was laughing so loud that my wife asked what was going on), and very easy to read. I do not hesitate to recommend this for anyone that wants an up to date look at where they should eat, and what they should see while in Paris.

An Excellent Paris Dining Guide
I highly recommend the Whimsical Gourmet's Guide to Paris. The author has done an excellent job in explaining to his readers what to expect when they go to Paris, especially as it pertains to dining. This is the first guide that I've seen that really goes into detail when it comes to dining out with children. For us that's a big plus.

The restaurant reviews were well written and in some cases extremely funny. Having been to Paris a couple of times before, I felt that Mr. Krupnick was on target, and very fair. But don't read this if you are on a diet. The more I read the hungrier I got! There was also an excellent section on French wines, as well as tips about what to see and do in each area.

As I was reading the guide, I almost felt as if I was on vacation already. We are planning a trip to France this fall, and I know that this book will accompany us on our voyage.

A Very Funny Look at Paris Dining
The Whimsical Gourmet's Guide to Paris is a very funny look at what is happening in the current Paris dining scene. Author Rick Krupnick deftly guides us towards the dining establishments that he and his review team enjoy, while regaling us with humorous insights on Paris.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to learn about traveling to Paris, where to eat, and what to see in each area. The tone is conversational, as if the author was actually telling me first hand about his experiences. When you read the guide, you get a sense of what Paris is really like.

The book is laid out in a manner that would make it easy to use while in Paris. It covers everything from pre-trip planning to quaint little tea shops. However, the book does not cover hotels, so one would need another guide book for help with that subject.

I truly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in food, wine, and gourmet shopping!

If you're staying awhile...
When my friend and I went to France for the first time, we decided that our trip would consist almost totally of Paris, which has so must to see that it deserves about two weeks in itself. When the time came to start looking for guidebooks, by coincidence a letter writer in a travel magazine raved about this Access edition, so I picked it up. I wasn't disappointed.

If you're only spending a few days it isn't a good choice - you'll only be dealing with must-sees like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame anyway. It is ideal, though, if your're staying for 2 weeks or longer, sectioning off neighborhoods of the city into chunks that are tourable in a day. This is definitely a mark-up book, begging for sights you want to see, restaurants you want to eat at, and stores you want to shop in to be highlighted or circled. The color highlighting is a useful tool, the drawings are wonderful, and the entries fun and informative - a delight to read when you're actually sitting down at the destination being described.

A good guidebook for the tourist making more than a token visit and who's willing to do a little work beforehand.

Most usable endearing travel guide
This guide breaks Paris into neighborhoods, the most recommended way to explore the city. The color coding is highly useful. The maps are handy. The descriptions lively and charming. lt's condensed yet packed with invaluable informational tidbits. Don't leave home without it. lt's the one to take along every day all day.

Outstanding -- Best Travel Boodk Format
This is the best travel book there is ....I too have had the same book for 9 years and its information is still the best....I wish they would do an update....

This has been my favorite and most practical guide to Paris
I've been using this book since 1984. The small size and clear maps make this easy to carry. My current copy is so dog-eared and I've been looking for it's update. By chance, I ordered the Travel & Leisure Paris and found it to be the same format, similar size and with the same clear maps (copyright 1997). For those of you looking to update your Paris guides the new book could be a good substitute for an old favorite. I leave for Paris again in 2 weeks, and I'll pack the new book along with the old for further comparison.

And the Wisdom to Know the Difference, Conversations with Residents of San Francisco, Paris, and Minsk

a book of great value
In this book, which is based on 63 dialogues with residents of Paris, San Francisco, and Minsk, Belorus, Francis Feeley has given us remarkable descriptions of ordinary people and events in three cities. This comparative study of urban life ( enfanced by revealing photographs of the people interviewed ) is recommended reading not only for students of French society, of which we are a part, but for students of western societies in general, where similarities and differences are not well-defined in the minds of many. In today's context of " globalization", this book might well remain a essential text for analysing the evolution of convergences and disintigrations of social units in western societies, especially in the three urban centers represented in this book.

AN EXTRAORDINARY BOOK ABOUT DAILY LIFE IN THREE CITIES
This book is a comparative study of daily life in three historic cities. Students of sociology, anthropology, and comparative social history will benefit from reading these first-person accounts of individual aspirations, disappointments, and triumphs.

The cultural differences between the French, the residents of the former Soviet Union, and the Californians are interesting, but what these great people share in common and their attitudes facing daily life are valuable reminders of why we have survived as a species.

A Wonderful Book About an Art Masterpiece
Daniel Weiss has written an outstanding book on one of the great masterpieces of medieval art - Sainte Chapelle in Paris. His analysis and discussion tell us about this marvel of stained glass, and how it was built by King (Saint)Louis IX to house the Crown of Thorns and to make it the Christian equivalent of Solomon's temple in Jerusalem. Scholarly but readable, and beautifully illustrated.

Fascinating, informative, thorough
Dr. Weiss, a noted professor and scholar, has made a specialized subject very accessible and interesting. His thorough research, smooth writing skills, and thoughtful analysis are on display on each page. This is not just a book for art history experts - it should be widely read and enjoyed.

I ordered it and unless you can read Spanish...
This is written in Spanish, thus the description "Spanish Edition". I ordered this one and had to return it to get the English version. I am sure the information in it is quite helpful to anyone who would prefer to read it in Sapnish!

Make sure that your need a SPANISH guide book!
This is actually a Paris guide book in SPANISH...not english. FYI..
