Indispensible
This book is not terribly easy to use. But that's because Navajo is not terribly easy to speak -- or (looking at it the other way) to analyze. So I caution readers that they should spend some time learning the organization of the lexicon before they expect to be able to use it fluently.

However, this book is /the/ must-own book for anyone who studies Navajo language or culture. Its thoroughness (somewhere over twenty-five thousand entries, I think) is astounding.

Very helpful for teachers of young children!
This book guides early childhood educators through the concept of implementing early childhood art into their classrooms. It is very helpful in showing teachers how to focus on the "process" not the "product". There are also many wonderful ideas for special needs children, and for adding multicultural art experiences into the classroom.

A Review Of R.L. Stevenson's Body Snatchers
I think that the Body Snatchers by R.L. Stevenson is a really good book of the macbre and of horror. This book makes his The Strange Case Of Doctor Jekyll & Mister Hyde look like a walk in the park. When I read this book, it made me hang on to the edge of my seat, because some of the tales about what the people were doing was just down right scary, like the title of the book. I just think about back in the 1800's, there was actually people who stole bodies from graveyards for a living, and some of those people made some serious money off of it, too. Reading this book makes me glad that I didn't live during that time period, where if I died, I could be dug up, and sold to a medical school for the medical students to cut me up like I was a frog to be cut open and worked on. That's how the medical students would do it, too, just like a frog for a modern day middle school science class would do it today. But if you like some serious horror reading, I suggest reading this book, even though it's out of print, it's worth getting, because it may be worth lots & lots of money later..

An Overlooked Master
John Gordon is an extraordinary writer with an extraordinary career. He's been writing books for children and young adults for something like 30 years, and yet it's impossible to find more than a couple of his books in print at any time these days. His work is largely of a high standard and would certainly be appreciated by those who enjoy more enduringly better-known writers like Robert Westall or Alan Garner, writers with whom he certainly deserves to be mentioned. Critically, Gordon is regarded as a writer of conspicuous ability, and his The House On The Brink is recognised as one of the best stories written in the M.R.James style ever.

And yet, he goes largely un-noticed, unremarked, unprinted, and -I fear - unread even during today's enlightened times when children's books are finding a wider audience.

Although I think that some of Gordon's best work can be found in novels like Gilray's Ghost or the M.R. James pastiche The Flesh Eater, I adore The Burning Baby, because all of the horror stories it contains are short, and have bite - more than that, they have the atmosphere of menace and lurking threat which typifies his best work, but in concentration. The dark moods of his longer works are presented here in an accessible and immediate form; this book is both a superb introduction to the writer, and is at the same time among his best work.

Indeed, forget the 'children's' tag. While this book doesn't contain conspicuous or gratuitous horrors of an 'adults-only' kind, it could certainly hold its own among horror and ghost stories for an 'adult' market. This is a collection of rare mood and power.

A Celebration of Customs & Rituals of the World

Used price: $15.96

The colorful diversity of ceremonies.
"Celebration" is the right word.
Wilkinson and Ingpen portray the world's ceremonies of development (from birth to death), surviving (hunting and harvesting, eating and drinking, healing), socializing (initiation, gift-giving, dispute-settlement), and aspects of spirituality in this clearly written, beautifully illustrated work.
The ceremonial dress from all areas of the world is particularly striking, and the reader begins to see the universality of human experience beneath the colorful variations of cultural expressions; "perfect symbols of the unity of the family of mankind".
With a Calendar of Customs, suggestions for further reading, and an excellent index, this well produced, generously sized work would make an excellent gift for children as well as adults. Highly recommended.

A wonderful book!
This book really points out how some people have a big problem with greed. It also tells you to mind your own business when it doesn't concern you. I think you should read this book. I also recommend that you read Into The Flames and A Way Across The Sea.

Perfectly beautiful book for family sharing.
I could hardly believe my good fortune to find my favorite Robert Frost poem had been illustrated by my favorite illustrator! This is much better than another "kiddie book about reindeer" This is a book to read aloud and share with the extended family. What an introduction to real poetry for the younger ones! I would give it 10 stars if I could.
