finally!!!!
Succinct, authoritative, indispensable. One wonders where this book has been. Goff makes it seem so simple. Could it really be? But finally there is a voice that spells it out. A great read that we've waited for forever. A must for the changing marketplace.

So much great information!
This book is a must for all IT professionals! It contains information relevant to most, if not all, IT careers whether you are looking for changing your career or just keeping yourself marketable. Ms. Goff includes great interviews with people in all aspects of IT. The interviews include job descriptions, the good and bad parts to a particular position, and some helpful hints and ideas (there is a great interview with the creator of the Elvis Presley/Graceland web site!). Ms Goff introduces you to many IT careers and tells you what are the related skills you need for that position. She also helps you decide if a job is right for you (I really liked reading about the different postions and learning what skills are needed in each position and what type of person is usually good in that position). She gives examples and tells how people have successfully transitioned either into IT from other fields or parlayed their position into a new position. This book has given me ideas for keeping myself up to date and how to use what I know already to advance my career or change areas and how to decide what I want to do next.

great uplifting book for kids in alcoholic families
Great book for kids dealing with a lot of hard things going on. Seems authentic and down to earth.

Emotionally enlightening and liberating little book
This little book is a great communications opener for children and adults, particularly for children in a difficult living situation. Feelings are explored in a warm, safe way and the reader is shown that we have choices about how we feel and act. Everthing a child (and adult!) needs to know about feelings to succeed in life is covered with simple words and delightful illustrations. Excellent for use by a big brother/sister or caring mentor as well as family members and friends. A special gift for someone important in your life who is in need of a friend.

Wonderful, Mozartian
A charming little book, Mozartian in its profundity. The profundity is there in a down to earth practical spirituality. This book would be a most appreciated gift.

In Real Life
I have thoroughly enjoyed Leslie Sill's previous books on artists, and now her latest book on photographers. They are wonderful outlines of artist's lives, their work, and how their past experiences have influenced the direction of their art. As an art teacher, I try to incorporate different ways of introducing my students to a wide range of work. Because these stories are so well-written and inspiring, I have designed large portions of my curriculum around Sill's past books and look forward to using this book as well. The stories are thorough, yet written in a way that the average person, who may not necessarily feel that they have a valid knowledge on art, could walk away from it with a new understanding and interest. And just the opposite, for someone who is innvolved in art, this book is beautifully put together and would be a valued part of any art book collection.

A Great Book About Women Photographers
When I first read this book, I was moved by these women's lives. I was amazed at how they persevered at their art through all the hardships of life. I find Leslie Sills an amazing writer. This is not the first book I have read by her. I also have the one about painters, and by reading both books I felt that I learned alot. Leslie Sills is an amazing artist herself, and her own life should be the subject of a book someday. I would recommend this book to anybody, but particularly to people interested in photography or art.

Simple Introduction to Six Outstanding Women Photographers
Knowing that women artists in all fields tend to suffer from a lack of public exposure, I took a look at this volume hoping to find some good work that I had not seen before. My hopes were rewarded when all six photographers proved to be talented, interesting, and stylistically different from each other . . . and four of them were new to me. With the two artists I knew before, the biographical essays added to my knowledge, making every aspect of the book a pleasant surprise.

The book is organized around the concept that "cameras do copy which is front of the lens . . . [but these images are also] creations of the artist's intention and unconscious mind."

The essays are especially rewarding for their balance in explaining the artists' family lives, their relationships with the men in their lives, how they started into photography, their technique, and descriptions of their aesthetic values. Leslie Sills is pleasantly succinct:

Imogen Cunningham: "liked to examine life closely" and focused on "shapes, textures, patterns" in nature. She also captured the "essence" of people.

Dorothea Lange: The camera was an "activist tool" which "revealed the sufering of thousands and motivated others to help" during the Depression.

Lola Alvarez Bravo: Captured the real "Mexico after the Mexican Revolution" occurred there.

Carrie Mae Weems: Showed the "complexities of being human" especially in "squelching stereotypes" and "honoring African-American culture."

Elsa Dorfman: "Celebrates humanity" with her oversized camera that captures people to look more naturally like themselves than photographs normally do.

Cindy Sherman: Sees the camera as an "instrument to copy her constructed scenes" which are "puzzles that challenge her audience."

It has not been easy to be a woman photographer and these women succeeded because they persevered, as well as because they were so talented. Their stories are as inspiring as any I have read, and also tell an interesting tale of how your work can help you express your inner self.

Here are my favorite images from the book:

Imogen Cunningham:

Magnolia Blossom, 1925

My Father at 90, 1936

Morris Graves, Painter, 1950

Dorothea Lange:

Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California, 1936 (Series of 3)

There is a wonderful description of how this series was shot on a day when Ms. Lange was exhausted and had driven past the migrant labor camp in the rain before deciding intuitively to turn back and try her luck.

Lola Alvarez Bravo:

Por culpas ajenas, c. 1945

Elsueno de los pobres 2, 1943

The Two Fridas, c. 1944

Carrie Mae Weems:

Mom at Work, 1978-1984

Untitled (Letter Holder), 1988-89

Her work also included long interviews with her family.

Elsa Dorfman:

Robbie and the Dinosaur Femur, 1970

Terri Terralouge and Aileen Graham, 1989

Cindy Sherman:

Untitled #224, 1990

Given that these styles are so different and so vivid, I encourage you to use this book to inspire you to create some art. It doesn't have to be photography. Whether you like to sketch, sculpt, paint, or make colored soap bubbles, give yourself the chance to live freer and take a little time to express yourself. You'll feel so much better, and the rest of us will be enriched by your gift.

Express yourself . . . to find yourself!

I bought this for my 7 year old sister...she loves it! She is learning about science without even knowing it and loves making the different concoctions!

Fun for Kids seven and up
"The incredible secret formula book" gives plenty of neat little things to keep you and your kids busy on those boring summer days.

Most of the things in this book use items you probably all ready have in your home: paper, corn starch, sugar and various food items.

This book details things like How to make invisible ink or disappering ink. If that doesn't interest you there's making chalk out of egg shells or how to recylce paper. you can even make "Mutant slime" a kids favorite. Don't like mutant Slime? how 'bout psylly slime or miss muppet slime? victal slime or udderly Gross slime? lots of fun for kids and thier mom and or dad.

Kids' Favorite
This book has become my children's favorite. It is full of cheap ideas that the kid's love to experiment with. I would recommend this book to all parents.

The Irony of Vietnam: The System Worked
Published in Paperback by The Brookings Institution (1979)
Authors: Leslie H. Gelb and Richard K. Betts
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

Superb Analysis On Vietnam And Why We Staggered &Stalemated!
One of a series of must read books on Vietnam for all who want to enter the field of International Relations and Foreign Policy. The author in a very methodical way details how America's National Security Apparatus of decision-making simply stalemated over Vietnam, not due to blunders but to positions that were well argued from both stand points. One group of advisors recommended no withdraw at any price. The other could not agree on how to win a victory and then exit. In the meantime, four presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon tried to win and escape at the same time as American boys blood reigned on the soaked soil of Vietnam. Although few blame Harry Truman's mistake by forcing a limited war to save South Korea, fewer know Truman started us in Vietnam as well when he first gave $10 million in Military Aid to the French in 1947. However, every president after him escalated the war to win it, only to see all attempts for peace evaporate when trying to stop it. What you find is the explanation in this book on why such outstanding advisors to five presidents could only agree to escalation to prevent withdrawal but develop no victory strategy at the same time. Leslie Gelb answers and details the blunders at the very center of National Security Council points of view. If you want to see how decisions were made back then, this is the book for you! In the end, you will question why so many failed leaving so many to die and few excuses to remember.

A Superb Book
This is an excellent, balanced, and well-written study of American foreign policy in Vietnam by two unusually able scholars. It refutes the modern mythology that LBJ and/or Nixon "dragged Congress kicking and screaming" into the conflict, and notes that a plurality of New Hampshire voters who supported McCarthy in Feb. 1968 went on to support George Wallace and Gen. Curtiss ("Bomb Hanoi back to the stone age") LeMay in the November election--that is, they were Hawks protesting a "no-win" policy rather than Doves who wanted to abandon South Vietnam to the Communists. Highly recommended.

One of the best books on American foreign policy wrt Vietnam
Very well-researched book regarding American policy towards Vietnam. The authors explore the constraints of each president, especially LBJ, when they had to deal with Vietnam. Especially incisive is the authors' view of "minimum necessary" vs "maximum feasible" constraints on US presidents w.r.t. Vietnam. This is not a conspiracy book or a first-person account. It is geared towards the academe who wants to learn about how US foreign policy was conceived and implemented wrt Vietnam.

Master Key to Good Golf

Master Key To Good Golf
I found this book in a resale store and picked it up for fun.
I applied his method to my current game and took about 5 strokes from my game. As in any instructional tool, time is the true testing ground. Highly recommended reading. I am also a wrong handed golfer which makes any book a challenge.

Key to better golf
This is the best book on golf I have ever read, and I have read almost all of them. This is mostly unknown but condenses the swing into just the right explinations.

I highly recommend it if you want to see a dramitic change in your game.

Most Unlikely Golf Prospect Turned Into A Champion
This book states that with the correct training even the most unlikely prospect can be turned into championship material.

It is true!

The price you must pay to develop an excellent golf swing is to read and re-read and re-read this book; page by page, exercise by exercise.

This is an outstanding book for the persons willing to spend hours reading and applying Leslie King's method.

I highly recommend the book.

Good luck; you may be the next champion.

The Microscope Book
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (1997)

Amazon base price: $8.76
List price: $10.95 (that's 20% off!)
Average review score:

Great color pictures & Photos and easy experiments
My son wanted a microscope for his birthday. I had already bought some microscope books. This one was the best for beginners. On every page there are detailed but cute color pictures explaining all the technical stuff. ALSO, on each page that talks about viewing a particular object under the microscope, there's an ACTUAL PHOTO of the object under the microscop, so you don't have to guess if you're looking at the right thing. This is a really fun book. Before I looked at this book I was getting discouraged because the other two books seemed way too complicated and thus boring for my 8 year old son.

NOT ONLY are the pictures and experiments great, but this book talks about SAFETY, it tells you what overall SUPPLIES you will need, for each individual experiment what SUPPLIES you will need, it explains--in a FUN WAY--how the microscope and other lenses work. ALSO, in the authors own words, "THE MICROSCOPE BOOK is intended to teach children basic techniques and observation skills WITHOUT DESTROYING ANY LIFE FORMS."

I commend the authors Shar Levine & Leslie Johnstone and the Illustrator David Sovka.

The perfect microscope book for the younger readers.
This larger format book contains a wonderful mix of colorful cartoon-like illustrations and full color photomicrographs of interesting projects for learning more about our small world. The book is entertaining, educational, and fun. Teenagers and adults will want to follow-up with the more detailed book "Exploring with the Microscope", by Werner Nachtigall.

The perfect microscope book for the 9-12 age group.
This well illustrated book covers the basics of microscopy for the younger reader in an atmosphere of fun and delight. The reader will learn more about their small world and have a good time with the many interesting projects. This book and it's cartoon-like illustrations and detailed photomicrographs are a wonderful example of a fine science book for young readers.

From Nina Simonds, comes an entertaining activity book that combines the enchantment of ancient Chinese tales with lessons of tradition and history. A blending of delightful storytelling and colorful illustration makes this a cultural delight.

Gorgeous illustrations & culture w/o the "PC" message
This is a beautifully executed book. The watercolors alone are worth the purchase, but it also includes very clever, not too difficult activities. How can you not be enthralled by thousands of years-old traditions and folklore??

Naturally Naughty (Bare Essentials)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (2002)
Author: LESLIE KELLY
Amazon base price: $4.50
Average review score:

wonderful contemporary romance
Successful Chicago business owner, Kate Jones returns to Pleasantville, Ohio to sell her mother's house. Kate's hates the place perhaps as much or more than her cousin Cassie (see NAUGHTY BUT NICE) loathes their hometown. Kate learns that her mother had an affair with the now deceased Mayor Winfield, who kept her mom hidden from his constituents since he was married and she was white trash. Kate vows vengeance targeting the son John, Jr. as fair game.

Jack Winfield comes home to clean up the mess his father left behind when he died. Jack sees Kate, knows he wants her, acts out of character by following her and when they meet he cannot resist a kiss that she also thoroughly enjoys. However, when she learns her Jack is John, Jr. she rejects him as if he carried the plague though their sparks could provide the Christmas lighting for the Windy City. Jack needs to overcome her rejection as he loves her and is encouraged by the belief that Kate loves him too.

Leslie Kelly spins a wonderful contemporary romance that sort of reads like a second chance at love albeit the first time for the next generation. The story line engages the audience from the moment a reluctant Kate comes home and never loses the reader until the final time Jack kisses his kissable Kate. Fans of a torrid tale with terrific characters will want to read the noteworthy NATURALLY NAUGHTY.

Harriet Klausner

Naturally Naughty
I've read all of Leslie Kelly's books and this is one of her best. The hero is sooo good I fell in love with him right away. And finally a heroine who knows what she wants sexually as well as professionaly. The tension between the two is instantaneous and HOT! A really humorous read, I especially loved the "cheese cake" scene. Lot's of steamy love scenes to read over, and over, and over... I can't say enough good things about this story!!!

Seductive and intoxicating - Very highly recommended
Jilted on her prom night, Kate Jones trudges home bearing the scandal of her name and the pain of rejection. When she arrives home she realizes her mother is having an affair with the town's mayor, thereby completing her night's disillusionment. So she and cousin Cassie make a list of their goals that will turn the town of Pleasantville, Ohio on its ear. Ten years later they make their dreams come true with Bare Essentials, a store that caters to a woman's most intimate needs. In addition, Kate gains the opportunity to seduce and destroy the son of the mayor.

Jack Winfield, son of the mayor, cannot wait to return to Chicago. His mother's tears and his sister's theatrics in the wake of his father's death only reinforce his need for escape. As he wanders the streets of Pleasantville, however, Jack catches a glimpse of Kate, and determinedly refuses to let an opportunity pass; together they find unexpected attraction and opportunity. Fortunately, they both now live in Chicago and connect there. Unfortunately, neither he nor Kate initially recognizes their unlikely family connection in Pleasantville. But circumstances will throw them back together proving that they are both naturally naughty.

Being bad has never been so much fun as in Leslie Kelly's NATURALLY NAUGHTY. A risqué romp on the wild side, NATURALLY NAUGHTY's wonderful, wicked playfulness satisfies! On one hand, Kate's believes she can never risk trust and vulnerability to fall in love, believing vibrators to be a whole lot safer! On the other hand, Sexy, confident Jack is just the kind of hero romance readers expect, with his appeal to the senses. And he loves the naughtiness Kate conceals beneath her cool demeanor. Their time together in the abandoned theater will make reader's toes curl! Indeed, once again Leslie Kelly proves her deft gift for penning romantic tales brimming with scorching sensuality. Very highly recommended.
