The book is organized around the concept that "cameras do copy which is front of the lens . . . [but these images are also] creations of the artist's intention and unconscious mind."
The essays are especially rewarding for their balance in explaining the artists' family lives, their relationships with the men in their lives, how they started into photography, their technique, and descriptions of their aesthetic values. Leslie Sills is pleasantly succinct:
Imogen Cunningham: "liked to examine life closely" and focused on "shapes, textures, patterns" in nature. She also captured the "essence" of people.
Dorothea Lange: The camera was an "activist tool" which "revealed the sufering of thousands and motivated others to help" during the Depression.
Lola Alvarez Bravo: Captured the real "Mexico after the Mexican Revolution" occurred there.
Carrie Mae Weems: Showed the "complexities of being human" especially in "squelching stereotypes" and "honoring African-American culture."
Elsa Dorfman: "Celebrates humanity" with her oversized camera that captures people to look more naturally like themselves than photographs normally do.
Cindy Sherman: Sees the camera as an "instrument to copy her constructed scenes" which are "puzzles that challenge her audience."
It has not been easy to be a woman photographer and these women succeeded because they persevered, as well as because they were so talented. Their stories are as inspiring as any I have read, and also tell an interesting tale of how your work can help you express your inner self.
Here are my favorite images from the book:
Imogen Cunningham:
Magnolia Blossom, 1925
My Father at 90, 1936
Morris Graves, Painter, 1950
Dorothea Lange:
Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California, 1936 (Series of 3)
There is a wonderful description of how this series was shot on a day when Ms. Lange was exhausted and had driven past the migrant labor camp in the rain before deciding intuitively to turn back and try her luck.
Lola Alvarez Bravo:
Por culpas ajenas, c. 1945
Elsueno de los pobres 2, 1943
The Two Fridas, c. 1944
Carrie Mae Weems:
Mom at Work, 1978-1984
Untitled (Letter Holder), 1988-89
Her work also included long interviews with her family.
Elsa Dorfman:
Robbie and the Dinosaur Femur, 1970
Terri Terralouge and Aileen Graham, 1989
Cindy Sherman:
Untitled #224, 1990

I applied his method to my current game and took about 5 strokes from my game. As in any instructional tool, time is the true testing ground. Highly recommended reading. I am also a wrong handed golfer which makes any book a challenge.
I highly recommend it if you want to see a dramitic change in your game.
It is true!
The price you must pay to develop an excellent golf swing is to read and re-read and re-read this book; page by page, exercise by exercise.
This is an outstanding book for the persons willing to spend hours reading and applying Leslie King's method.

Good luck; you may be the next champion.

NOT ONLY are the pictures and experiments great, but this book talks about SAFETY, it tells you what overall SUPPLIES you will need, for each individual experiment what SUPPLIES you will need, it explains--in a FUN WAY--how the microscope and other lenses work. ALSO, in the authors own words, "THE MICROSCOPE BOOK is intended to teach children basic techniques and observation skills WITHOUT DESTROYING ANY LIFE FORMS."
I commend the authors Shar Levine & Leslie Johnstone and the Illustrator David Sovka.

Jack Winfield comes home to clean up the mess his father left behind when he died. Jack sees Kate, knows he wants her, acts out of character by following her and when they meet he cannot resist a kiss that she also thoroughly enjoys. However, when she learns her Jack is John, Jr. she rejects him as if he carried the plague though their sparks could provide the Christmas lighting for the Windy City. Jack needs to overcome her rejection as he loves her and is encouraged by the belief that Kate loves him too.
Leslie Kelly spins a wonderful contemporary romance that sort of reads like a second chance at love albeit the first time for the next generation. The story line engages the audience from the moment a reluctant Kate comes home and never loses the reader until the final time Jack kisses his kissable Kate. Fans of a torrid tale with terrific characters will want to read the noteworthy NATURALLY NAUGHTY.

Jack Winfield, son of the mayor, cannot wait to return to Chicago. His mother's tears and his sister's theatrics in the wake of his father's death only reinforce his need for escape. As he wanders the streets of Pleasantville, however, Jack catches a glimpse of Kate, and determinedly refuses to let an opportunity pass; together they find unexpected attraction and opportunity. Fortunately, they both now live in Chicago and connect there. Unfortunately, neither he nor Kate initially recognizes their unlikely family connection in Pleasantville. But circumstances will throw them back together proving that they are both naturally naughty.
Being bad has never been so much fun as in Leslie Kelly's NATURALLY NAUGHTY. A risqué romp on the wild side, NATURALLY NAUGHTY's wonderful, wicked playfulness satisfies! On one hand, Kate's believes she can never risk trust and vulnerability to fall in love, believing vibrators to be a whole lot safer! On the other hand, Sexy, confident Jack is just the kind of hero romance readers expect, with his appeal to the senses. And he loves the naughtiness Kate conceals beneath her cool demeanor. Their time together in the abandoned theater will make reader's toes curl! Indeed, once again Leslie Kelly proves her deft gift for penning romantic tales brimming with scorching sensuality. Very highly recommended.
