An Excellent Historical Portrait
Woman of Color, Daughter of Privilege tells the story of Amanda Dickson, daughter of a wealthy plantation owner in rural Georgia and one of his slaves. Amanda was much loved by her father and amazingly went on to inherit most of his estate upon his death despite the strict racial segregation and discrimination of the era. Obviously, this situation was unique for its time. The book is very well-written,very informative and provides a good glimpse into the life of a privileged woman in a strictly segregated society. Highly recommended

Great Cleansing Diet !!
I have been using this cleansing diet two or three times a year for about fifteen years now. I have passed it on to many friends who also swear by it. My copy has disappeared and I would really like to have it in my library again. Please! reprint this fabulous guide.

Please publish again!
Yes, I too have found this book to be fantastic and very easy to follow.

I first did the plan after reading an article in UK Elle, towards the end of the 80s, and have been doing it regularly since then (once or twice a year).

In fact I'm doing it again now. But now I don't have the book, it's mostly from memory.

It's a fantastic plan to get energy back (particularly after those sluggish change of season times).

I have found it *the* single most effective way to reclaim my tastebuds, rid myself of bad eating patterns, cut out coffee, alcohol etc for more than just a few days.

So, I can highly recommend it to everyone...just hope they publish it again.

I followed this plan in 1988 and it was the best plan for eliminating sugar, salt and processed foods from your diet.
After 10 days my desire for sugar, salt and processed foods wasgone! I could taste the chemicals that were added to foods - and itwasn't pleasant. Also, I only required about 6 hours of sleep a night (my body no longer needed as much time to recooperate). I had a tremendous amount of energy and felt lighter. Even though this is not a "diet" it is a great basis for beginning a new way of eating. I can't believe it is no longer published. It is short and very easy to follow.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (The Sherlock Holmes Reference Library)
Published in Paperback by Gasogene Books (26 December, 1998)
Authors: Leslie S. Klinger and Arthur Conan Doyle
Amazon base price: $26.95
Average review score:

The game is a footnote
It is a pity that the Holme's casebook hasn't been found, but this book helps to relieve some of the gaps and inconsistencies in Watson's accounts and to help understand the locations and notable figures in Victorian England. Perhaps, as is suggested in one footnote, Watson had strict instructions to conceal the identity of everyone ... and hence every train mentioned in the Canon is erroneous.

Klinger does a masterful job of using sources such as the 1883 Encyclopedia Britannica and the 1894 Baedeker's handbook of travel in Britain as well as recent scholarship. For example, in a footnote in the Noble Bachelor describing that there is food enough for four, "Holmes must have deduced that Lord St. Simon would not remain to share the repast; a point which Watson completely missed". Klinger also provided his own insights. The few appendices provide insight into such things as the identity of the snake in the speckled band or unrecorded cased recorded in the five orange pips. Perhaps the only annoying thing in the book is the use of abbreviations of some of the references. The Baring-Gold annotated Sherlock Homes is, still essential, and this is a welcome addition.

THE definitive Sherlock Holmes -- a pleasure to read!
...Klinger's notes are extremely helpful and informative (not to mention entertaining), and the copious illustrations by Paget are a great addition as well. This (and the future volumes, of which Memoirs, Hound of the Baskervilles, and Study in Scarlet have been published to date) are a worthy successor to William Baring-Gould's justly acclaimed annotated Holmes from years back, and are, in opinion, a better value and more enjoyable read than the rather dry Oxford editions.

If you are new to Sherlock Holmes, this may not be the most economical way to pick up all of Conan Doyle's work. But if you are a long-time Holmes fan, or just want to experience the Holmes stories in a deeper and more informed way, I can think of no better purchase than this. ...

It made the wonderful Sherlock Holmes story even better!
This book was very interesting and obviously meticulously researched. The Sherlock Holmes stories included are fun to read and Klinger's annotations make them really come alive! He has included information about the times, inconsistencies in details and interesting speculations. I already loved the Sherlock Holmes stories and this book improved and explained and illustrated them masterfully!

All Is Not Lost

Excellent book on Grief and Loss. Understanding and compassionate look thru parables. Highly recommended.

A Truly Uplifting Book
What makes this book so special is that Leslie Charles' guidelines for "the healing journey through crisis, grief and loss" come from a writer who has endured some of life's biggest challenges-and emerged triumphant. Her personal story will captivate you. What she learned through her struggles will inspire you, and fortify you for those times when your immediate reaction tells you there is no hope, or even any reason to continue living.

Soap opera script writers might reject her account of her episodic life as too unbelievable. Teenage bride and mother, young divorcee, uneducated, no financial resources-that's only the beginning. After she courageously earned degrees and found a new life partner, tragedy struck again. She lost her twenty-one year old son, through an accidental death on the oil rig where he worked. Once more, she had to choose between despair and affirmation. She chose affirmation.

I found this book uplifting. The author shares her road map for moving successfully through life's irrational losses. Written in warm, almost conversational style, All Is Not Lost will help you endure the sadness you have faced already-and prepare you for those discouraging events yet to come.

Do you want to help someone who is grieving, yet "don't have any idea what to say to them"? Give them this book. Leslie Charles extends the assurance and advice that grief-stricken people need.

All Is Not Lost blessed me, and will bless you and many others.

A compelling look at healing after a crisis
"All is Not Lost" is a compassionate look at journeying through major life-changing crisis, grief, or loss. The author skillfully deals with the many aspects of a true crisis from the normal questions of "Why me?" to working through grieving to healing. It also deals with anger, disappointment, acceptance, hope, and the other emotions that go along with grief. Each chapter ends with an exercise to help you move along through the healing process. "All is Not Lost" takes you thoughtfully, gently, and lovingly through the healing process. It is a highly recommended read.

Excellent Book
Anger in the work place is an excellent resource for men and women in the work place. Anger is an issue that effects all of us in mostly negative ways. Althought anger can certainly be a positive catalyst for change, generally speaking anger creates unnecessary stress which can manifest itself in unhealthy ways. Overeating, drinking to excess etc, are examples of how unresolved anger can manesfest itself in unhealthy ways. This book helps people manage their anger in positive ways. The author recommends simple steps which are very helpful on a daily basis. The book is written simply and is to the point. I recommend this book for anyone who struggles with internal and unconscious anger. A thumbs up to Ms. Leslie!

This book can be a very useful tool.
I think this can be a very useful tool to someone who is experiencing a difficult situation in his/her work place. The author gives many ideas and suggestions of ways to deal with your anger and the symptoms which go along with that anger. I also feel that the case studies are interesting since many people may be identify themselves within these descriptions. This book also gives many resources which can be very useful to one who may need additional help.

Right on target. Great help for women AND men.
Great help for women and also for men interested in an environment that enhances everybody's daily work life. Has practical tips that are useful not only in dealing with anger in the workplace but in other areas of our lifes. Thumbs up!

Practical, thoughtful, succinct look at family business.
For the consultant, advisor, or family member, this is a must read because it is an excellent guide through the sometimes difficult waters of family business.

As an advisor to family owned businesses, I found the book particularly helpful in understanding the individual in relationship to the business and in understanding the interplay of the family system with the business system.

Ms. Dashew is straightfoward in her approach to the complexities of family owned business. She provides ample exercises that draws the readers attention to the issues with tips you can use in resolving those issues.

In her book, Ms. Dashew tackles difficult issues such as substance abuse (an issue too often supressed in the family and the business) and whether to join the family business. She brings clarity to the issues and provides practical advise.

Whatever your involvement with family owned businesses, this is a book that should be on your bookshelf.

Thorough, fresh, and insightful - from a leader in the field
This is one of the best books on personal development that I have read. A rare find amid the myriad self-help and pop psychology books, The Best of the Human Side offers a fresh perspective relayed with warmth, humor, and common sense. Many topics address issues family businesses face; however, several of these same topics (confrontation, dialogue, listening) apply just as strongly to non-business, interpersonal relationships.

I look forward to reading more from Leslie Dashew.

The best book to date on the complexity of a family business
In its most simple form, The Best Of The Human Side is about making connections.

First, there must be a connection with one's own identity - of being clear about who you are and what you are about before you can adequately enter into the second part of the book - making connections with others.

Finally, having looked at some practical ways of connecting with others, Leslie brings us to the most interesting and dynamic of all human interactions - the family business connection.

Having grown up in a family business, I can state with certainty that the insights, lessons and tools that are provided in The Best Of The Human Side are pragmatic, useful and easily understood.

There is a healing that takes place as you begin to understand that the dynamics of a family business are shared by most, if not all, family businesses. Ms. Dashew pulls from a wealth of different sources (i.e. The I Ching to The Lion King) to explain the multifaceted issues that face family businesses and in that explanation, there is a connection with other families who are experiencing the same thing you are.

For anyone who owns a family business, works for a family business, consults to a family business or in any way is connected to a family business, this book is a must to read.

It is easy to read but don't let that fool you to the depth of its content. Take your time and reflect on each chapter. This book makes a real connection!

Great book for toddlers
My 2 year old immediately loved this book. We take it to the bathroom and he looks at it while I brush his teeth and he practices on the pop up pictures. He shows everyone who comes to the house this book and talks about the pop up animals and how to brush. I highly recommend this book to any parent having problems getting their small kids used to brushing and flossing.

proud of her teeth and smile
This is one of my daughter's favorite books. We started reading the book with her, after we started brushing her teeth. She loves to brush the animals teeth, will use the lion's brush to brush mommy's or daddy's teeth and her own, and proudly shows her own teeth and smile in the mirror on the last page.

It would be great if each child who is starting brushing his/her teeth could have this book for him/herself!

The best brushing motivator ever - encourages imitation!
The age range for this book should be changed to ages 2 and up. My daughter loves to brush like a hippo and floss like a shark. This is the best book on teeth brushing I've ever seen. This is a great book to give as a gift to every toddler you know.

"Now what was that middle thing again?"
Yep the shelves are full of C and C++ books. It is not that one is better than the next. It is that sometimes it is good to have a book tell you what you already know in a different way. Then you can say "Oh, that's why it is done that way!" This is one of those books.

This is a hands-on step-by-step book to get you started.

A great book for beginners
This bookhas taught me alot , thanks to les hancock and morris krieger for making this book comprehendable to new c programmers like. I especially enjoyed their second edition of c primer. I hope some authors will have the idea on how to present their learning style just like what mr. hancock and mr. krieger did !

Provides some good explanations
I have found this book to be a rather good means of acquiring knowledge on many aspects of C programming. It provides a simple yet effective means of explaining various topics in C programming to the reader, using anecdotes and so forth. It might not be as extensive or as long as some other books, and cover all of the topics, but instead provides to the point explanations on the the more prominent topics which helps the reader understand concepts quickly. This book can be a good way to assist in ones learning C, I used it in conjuction with a much larger and more drawn out book, when I don't understand something I often turn to this book which provides a look at the subject from a slightly different perspective. I recommend this book, to be used in conjuction with another book such as Stephen Kochan's excellent and recommended Programming in ANSI C, but unfortunatly the C Primer is out of print.

An uplifting joy to simply page through
Compiled and arranged by Leslie Ann Gibson, The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations is a collection of 7,341 spiritual, inspirational, upbeat and meaningful quotes by a wide variety of respected women, ranging from Teresa of Avila, to Virginia Woolf, Doris Day, Margaret Thatcher, Susan B. Anthony, and many more. Organized under 62 general subjects and 703 subconcepts, The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations is indexed by author for easy reference. An uplifting joy to simply page through at random, and a veritable treasure trove of imminently practical advice ("The attributes of a great lady may still be found in the rule of the four S's: Sincerity, Simplicity, Sympathy, and Serenity.") The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations" is whole heartedly recommended for self-help, self-improvement reading lists, as well as Women's Studies supplemental reference collections.

Attention Authors & Speakers: Buy this book now!
As the author of a self-help/relationship book, I'm always looking out for new resources to improve my writing or develop ideas. My first book used "The New Beacon Book of Quotations For Women" as a primary resource and my next book will use this book extensively.

As a man I find that women writers tend to be more colorful, personal, and subtle in their choice of words. That is why I prefer this type of book over a giant glossary of quotations.

The best part of this book is the way the quotations are assembled around motivational-personal development themes. The choice of these themes shows a lot of enlightened thought and understanding by the editor, Leslie Ann Gibson. I've never seen such a high-quality collection of quotations around such well-chosen themes.

The only thing that I miss is a more thorough biographical index. It's hard for me to write or speak about what someone says unless the audience (and myself) knows who it is. So unfortunately, I have to spend a lot of additional time researching.

But all things considered this is a truly fine book that all serious writers and speakers should have in their personal libraries.

You go girl!
Unlike the previous reviewer, I liked how some quotes appeared under different headings, making it easier to reference to drop into emails, cards, etc. A great compilation of affirming, positive quotes, and a nice gift for Mom.
