Sgt. Rock meets Sven Hassel
Assault from Within is Konrat's account of a secret Russian speaking commando unit engaged on the Eastern Front in WWII . The book is an engaging read as long as you dont take it too seriously , there are too many factual inaccuracies to accept the publisher's assurances of authenticity . Konrat and his gang of gung ho 18 year olds sow destruction in the Soviet rear , the book comes to an end at the time when Germany's military successes are at their height .A strange place to stop - no doubt Konrat took up stamp collecting at this stage and Germany therefore consequently went on to lose the war .

The Preface and the Introduction provide a history lesson
We no longer use Log tables, but the Preface and the Introduction provide a real history lesson. The Preface is by BREMIKER Berlin, August 1856. I have a copy of this book in like-new condition.

Dialectics and dragonslayers
This is a cogent short work on the central place of Hegel in modern philosophy, containing a crisp account of the transition between the era of Kant and his successors. So this book is also most usefully about the 'before and after' of Kant. The interest of this transition springs from the decisive character, almost a spell, of the Hegelian influence, in the wake of the crisis of critical thinking and the unsettled questions of foundationalism precipated by the reaction to the seminal work of Kant. Following the swift passage from Kant's system, through to the alternate universe of Hegelian logic and phenomenology, leaves a spellbinding enigma, whose outcome is never certain, witness the cascade of dialectical reversals of all the basic questions. From the critique of metaphysics to the Hegelian absolute science is a whitewater of dangerous currents, and this book tells its tale beautifully, for those who will follow the trail in the devout wish of being a philosopher.

"Scrumptious" for The Fancier
The brief but extensively visual book presents the reader a wonderful world of Brugmansias and Daturas. Regardless of the the text, the photos are freestanding without even paying attention to anything else. A lively world of colors awaits the beholder (and reader), just waiting to be opened and dellighted in. Advisable for the lay as to the professional alike.

The "object" Woyzeck
While evolving around the potential for psychopathic violence and paranoia, Büchner's psycho-medical text not only guarantees human anxiety and hopelessness, but the phenomenological abolition of ontological hierachies. The fragmental composition mirrors a world of poverty, submission and alienation, where the "object" Woyzeck faces a materialistic fatality.

The scientist, the philosopher and the judge
Laszlo Solyom was one of the founding fathers of the third Hungarian Republic in 1989. After the making of the constitution he left the politics, and became the first president of the hungarian Constitutional Court. As president he built up again the hungarian constitutional tradition that he mixed with the development of the last 50 years. Today, Hungary as a republic has a solid constitutional base. It was mainly the work of Laszlo Solyom, we can say "exegit monumentum aere perennius"

A walk in their shoes
The yearning for friends and family left at home; the constant concern for the health and safety of spouse and children; the physical challenges; the inconveniences of camp cooking, laundering, bathing -- what was it really like for those women who traveled the Western trails? Told in their exact words, transcribed faithfully, these diaries give you have the rare opportunity to "walk in the shoes" of someone who really lived in those times. This is Vol. 7 in a series edited and compiled by Kenneth Holmes, and I have read and re-read the first ten. I recommend all of them.

It's the result of a happy marriage between two unusual authors: Adrian Fisher, probably the leading authority and builder of mazes working today, and Georg Gerster, the world's best aerial photographer. The photographs of mazes are spectacular but what I most appreciate is the consistently elegant design and layout of the book. It's replete with handsome diagrams and drawings which brilliantly illustrate the principles of maze design.
The text is also superb: thoughtful and truly interesting. Mr. Fisher provides deep and sometimes quirky insights into the history and aesthetics of mazes without ever becoming pedantic. His survey ranges from the mazes of antiquity to the latest innovations from around the world.
The book is published in London and lists its price only in pounds; I suspect it would be very hard to find at most American bookstores. Thank goodness for Amazon!
