Solid reading in tactics for professional military
Having been an instructor at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School and searching for information on artillery tactics and the origin of current doctrine, this book was enlightening and contains information that is very relevant to today's combat arms officer. I highly recommend the book as professional reading material. The book contains many lessons learned that will no doubt have to be relearned once again in time of war. Lt Col Zabecki has done the combat arms officer a favor by taking the time to compile the information for this book then to lay it all out in a comprehensible and enjoyable format. If you are interested in warfighting, you will enjoy this book. All my lieutenants will read this book, answer questions formatted by me, and write a review. Btry R, 5th Bn, 10th Marines.

Want to understand modern artillery? Read this book.
This book discusses Colonel Bruchmuller of the Imperial German Army and his role in developing modern artillery practices and tactics. By the time you finish this book you'll see how artillery went from guesswork to a deadly science. Highly recommended, whether you are a military buff or a professional soldier.

A outstanding book on the origins of field artillery tactics
The author of this excellent work is the former commander of the 2-123 FA. In this book he covers the birth of modern field artillery and its father -- COL Georg Bruchmuller. The author covers not only the history of the evolution of artillery from a direct fire weapon through the universal adoption of MET+VE; but also, the fire support tactics and techniques for employing the weapon. COL Bruchmuller started out the war as a medically retired LTC. He ended up as the de-facto FSCOORD for the German Army. Under his direction the German artillery developed MET+VE, the FDC, and the short, violent, multi-phased preparation. Bruchmuller orchestrated four to six hour preps that accomplished what one and two week preps by the allies couldn't -- breakthroughs. Bruchmuller's tactics and techniques are still in use by most of the world's armies today. The Russian fire support doctrine reads very closely to Bruchmuller's. This book is a quick read and is a must read for all artillerymen

Ford scores a home run.
This was a terrific story about the quest to find what is now Alaska. It gives insight into just how courageous these early exployers were. I can't comprehend of enduring those sort of hardships. Ford is also a good biologist and gives interesting commentary on the animal life. He also describes what may have been the first observation of a diving reflex in a marine mammal, the now extinct Northern sea cow. If you read this, it would be hard to complain about our current quality of life.

A great account of the first explorers to discover Alaska.
A true account of Vitus Bering's voyage from Russia to discover what is now Alaska. Anyone interested in the history of Alaska should start by reading this book, or someone looking for an actual true life adventure story that makes one appreciate the dangers encounted in the 1700's by these amazing explorers. This book is written from the journals of Georg Stellar, the naturalist on-board the boat that discovered Alaska. The first written account and identification of many species that Stellar discovered and writes about in his journals. One of which is extinct today and his writings are the only account of the massive Stellar Sea Cow. A fabulous account of these adventurors and their interaction with the beautiful, but deadly, Alaska coast and it's native people.

Great adventure book
Excellent story of the discovery of Alaska by the famous explorer,Vitus Bering and naturalist, Georg Steller. Combines text from Steller's extensive notes and observations of the author.

How a Backwoods Town Helped to Shape the USA
York, Pennsylvania was a town of less than 3,000 when Congress made its home here in 1777 and 1778. The Articles of Confederation were adopted here and France backed the struggling nation with a big infusion of silver. But the story does not stop there. During the Civil War this town that straddles the Mason-Dixon Line became a hotbed on the Underground Railroad; as a primary industrial center, the Confederates raided the place in 1863...distracted by unexpected action just to the west--in a little town called Gettysburg!
The author tells a whirlwind story of York County's contribution to the agricultural, industrial and cultural spirit of America and the hundreds of crisp illustrations and color photographs make it a delightful addition to the library of anyone who loves American history.

Birth of a Nation In a Frontier Town
This book is a delight for collectors of Americana. With over 350 photographs, it tells the story of how this frontier town became the seat of Congress and how it contributed to the American spirit through its production of food, clothing and rifles, to mention a few. It's the story of one of the earliest communities in William Penn's "Holy Experiment" and how that town became dominated by the "Pennsylvania Dutch (or German)" culture and then rose as a major leader in military, industrial and agricultural pursuits. It features a well thought-out index and a good bibliography--a must for libraries that want to fully tell the American story--and a good read for those who want a better feel for colonial, Civil War and World War days. Throw in York Barbells, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, York air conditioners and York Peppermint Patties and you have quite a smorgasbord of history. I recommend it for people doing genealogy throughout the eastern seaboard since this town's development affected all surrounding areas.

From Revolutionary Capital to Factory Tour Capital
This 288 page book tells the story of an American community that served as the nation's capital from September 1777 to June 1778 and helps readers understand regional, Pennsylvania and American history through lively text and more than 350 photographs, some in full color. York County, Pennsylvania has served as breadbasket and arsenal for the United States throughout its long and colorful history. Here we are present when the Articles of Confederation are drafted, when the Confederates take over th e town on the eve of Gettysburg...and when the so-called York Plan helped the allies win the two World Wars. York's role in the Underground Railroad unfolds with amazing clarity and a famous witch murder, steeped in Pennsylvania Dutch "powwowing" traditions are recounted with candor and wit.
The amazing production of the community includes York Barbells, York Air Conditioners, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, artificial teeth, and enough snacks, both sweet and salted, to feed half the nation. Factory tours have become a mainstay of York tourism, and along the way, we visit one of the largest interstate fairs in existence, a really big Halloween Parade, a smorgasbord of antique dealers and the enchanting folklore of the "Pennsylvania Dutch" still very much alive in farmers markets, street fairs and church suppers, to mention a few venues. Of all the books I've seen on York, this is the most colorful and balanced...and also the newest one since it has been updated, revised and enlarged from a similar book which appeared i 1981.

The Company of Words: Hegel, Language, and Systematic Philosophy (Northwestern University Studies in Phenomenology and Existential philosophy)
Published in Hardcover by Northwestern University Press (1993)
Author: John McCumber
Amazon base price: $64.95
Used price: $12.98
Average review score:

This book is a "must read" for all thinking people
Professor McCumber is one of the very few modern scholars who actually "gets" Hegel, and here, in a mere 442 pages, he distills Hegel down to a powerful, bitter essence. This is not summer reading, however. You will not want to carry this tome down to the beach or peruse it at poolside. No, this is definitely autumnal reading, best approached with a glass of good claret, a crackling fire in the hearth, and a shaggy dog asleep at your feet. The yellow leaves are piling up on your back lawn. The evening sky has a faintly regretful cast to its clotted clouds. But you, hypocrite lecteur, are happy to be inside with a good book in your lap. You are keeping company with one of the great continental philosophers. The solid weight of the book on your lap reassures you. This, after all, is what reading is all about.

Stinky poo
Anyone who is interested enough in philosophy to consider reading this book is not right in the head. I should know, since my father, John McCumber, has banished me to a summer of reading all of his books on philosophy. So from my antiradical epistemological Kantian theorem of chaotic Heidegger viewpoint, you stink!

Outstanding as Usual
One of the world's best operas printed by one of the world's best publishers - it couldn't be much better. Dover Publications' scores are always of the highest quality: Large pages and clear type for ease in reading, and a sewn spine (not glued) for flexability and durability. To make it even better, contained between the well-fabricated covers of this score is arguably the best opera ever composed by arguably the best composer the world has ever seen. Ladies and gentlemen, it doesn't get any better than this. If you like Mozart or if you like Don Giovanni, be sure to acquire this score as soon as possible.

Yet another excellent Dover publication
Dover has done it again. This opera (one of the best ever written) is done up beautifully for everyone; from someone just looking into an opera for the first time to an experienced veteran. I would recommend it for all. As a bonus, it includes the Concert Ending of the Overture, the Transposition of the Aria No. 21b and the But in the Finale No. 24. The Editor's Commentary is also very informative and interesting. A must have for any Mozart lover's collection.

Einsiedeln : the Monastery and Church of Our Lady of the Hermits : from the Carolingian period to the present

Exceptional
What you might find as a tourist book, is really a beautiful history of the Abbey of Maria Einsiedeln, in Switzerland. The photo illustrations are fantastic. I found it exceptional, and also the founding Abbey of the monastery to which I am a member in the US, Saint Meinrad Archabbey, in Indiana. We were founded from Maria Einsiedeln in 1854.

Excellent history of the Abbey, its artwork, and community.
On the surface, this is a souvenir guide for tourists visiting the Benedictine abbey at Einsiedeln. The scope of the book goes quite beyond this to include not only the religious art and architecture contained, but also the history of the region and the effect this has had in forming the religious community over the last 1200 years (& vice verse). Fascinating.

Buy This!
First, I must warn everyone that I have not read the entire book, but was extremely impressed with it after only reading one chapter! I had the pleasure of taking Prof. Neuhouser's class on social and political philosophy; Chapter 2 was cited as secondary reading as a supplement to Rousseau's Second Discourse and Social Contract. Prof. Neuhouser has an uncommon ability in both lecture and print to elucidate the material in such a way as to make it accessible without dumbing it down -- very helpful for someone who has no phil. background (like me!). I couldn't afford to buy a copy of this book right now, but I would if for just the deeper understanding of Rousseau it affords me. I'm sure anyone who has some familiarity with Hegel would be able to appreciate this book all the more!

Bold Insights Into Social Theory
Frederick Neuhouser has a great talent for bringing out Hegel's meaning. Although he claims only to elucidate Hegel, this work is tantamount to an original contribution to social theory. Specifically, he contributes strongly to understanding the way that state and society can serve as positive conditions for freedom or as parts of freedom itself. Neuhouser does not intentionally take on the claims of the opposing view held by conservative political theorists, but his work indirectly provides one of the most compelling refutations of the subjectivist approach of contemporary conservative political theory that I have ever read. Contemporary political and economic theory are, in my view, in Neuhouser's debt for this enlightening treatment of the social and political realms. Readers will appreciate the fact that he conveys these ideas through graceful prose unmarred by impenetrable jargon.

a long-overdue reissue
This is one of the best books on Hegel in English. Specifically, it's the best introduction to Hegel for readers who have a good general background in the history of philosophy, but who have yet to tackle Hegel in detail. It's been out of print for a long time, and it's great that it's readily available again.

G.W.F Hegel: An Introduction to the Science of Wisdom
This is another example of the bright and brilliant intelligence of the author. In this book Rosen brings the whole of the disagreements between the Moderns and the Ancients to bear on the analysis of Hegel. Reading Hegel as a modern, Rosen talks about how Hegel's engagement with the ancients, an engagement which is central to Hegel's thinking, is worked out in the dynamics of Hegel's political thinking. The drama of German thought, its scientism, its radicalisation of philosophical considerations in an effort to arrive at a system of thought, are played against the sober playfulness of ancient thought. The effect is elating, understandable and eminently digestible. Rosen is a god among men.

Great for Beginning French
I have purchased some books of this series in French and some in English, and read them interchangeably to my little girl. Hearing the same story in both languages is a good introduction to basic French. (You can get the books in French at Amazon.fr.)

Charming
A charming picture book. Gaspard and Lisa are two little dogs who want to bring a present to school for their human teacher. They decide to make her a raincoat, but of course they make a mess of it. First they tear down the shower curtain to use as material, then Gaspard gets stuck in it when they glue it together, then they try to wash it in the washing machine and it shrinks. However, they can still use the tiny coat - for their teacher's dog Pierre! This book is illustrated with rich, simple paintings that are a joy for the eye and that make the characters quite appealing.
