Great book, though not for the novice
If you're a student of paleontology, an avid amateur, or -- of course -- a professional, then this is a great book! It provides two very useful services. First, it captures the developments in paleontology (and evolution sciences in general) that have occured over the past ten or so year. Secondly, it focuses a bright light on developments in the southern hemisphere, where an awful lot of the action is now taking place. The book starts at the beginning (origins of life) and moves through various levels of development to human evolution in succint and easy-reading chapters (though the authors might have done a little more deciphering of the jawbreaking scientific terms they sprinkle about). There's an attempt at humor, but maybe Australian humor is differently evolved than American... it seems a little too chummy and not terribly funny. Perhaps the only serious problem with the book is inadequate illustrations. While there is usually one illustration per chapter, they are only moderately informative. Many more would be useful, as would be maps. As the authors are constantly refering to the breakup of the early southern hemisphere, a map or two would be very appreciated. All in all, a terrific book.

Amazingly comprehensive
This book will occupy a prime spot on my bookshelf. I've had to use a bunch of different books to find this kind of information before. It's nice to see such a wide range of topics from discrete math covered so thoroughly.

Handbook of Mineralogy: Silica, Silicates
Published in Hardcover by Mineral Data Pub (1997)
Authors: John W. Anthony, Richard A. Bideaux, Kenneth W. Bladh, and Monte C. Nichols
Amazon base price: $144.00

Excellent and complete
This book, in fact this whole series, has been excellent from the start. The amount of information provided is a little slim -- there are no crystal drawings, no forms listed, and no atomic arrangement information -- but all needed physical properties are given.

Just buy the whole series and you will not be disappointed.

Handbook of X Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy: A Reference Book of Standard Spectra for Identification and Interpretation of Xps Data
Published in Hardcover by Physical Electronics (1995)
Authors: John F. Moulder, William F. Stickle, Peter E. Sobol, and Kenneth D. Bomben
Amazon base price: $290.00
Used price: $120.00

A must-buy
I thoroughly recommend the purchase of this book to anyone engaged in the study of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as it almost functions as a "bible" of standard spectra for the elements. I also like the simple summary of the technique which actually includes a lot of information that would be hard to tease out of the overly technical texts on XPS that are around. For Universities and Research Institutes who have personnel experienced in XPS or who have the instrumentation, it is an essential purchase

History of Economics: The Past As the Present
Published in Hardcover by David & Charles (1987)
Author: John Kenneth Galbraith
Amazon base price: $14.95
Buy one from zShops for: $21.98
Average review score:

Witty, wonderful and informative read.
The only thing dry about reading Galbraith is his humor. I decided to read this book because I felt as though I missed some economic background and wanted to make sure I had the major basics covered. I expected it to be informative, something like reading a textbook.

It was nothing at all like reading a textbook (or if it had been I would have enjoyed college a whole lot more). I got the information I needed all right, but it was fascinating reading and I often found myself laughing out loud at Galbraith's asides.

Shame that it's out of print.

Jane's All the Worlds Aircraft 1997-1998 (Serial)

(Annual) Definintive guide to aircraft and engines
For almost 80 years Jane's has published an annual guide to currently produced aircraft (including Remotely Piloted Vehicles, Balloons, Sailplanes, Sport (homebuilt/experimental) aircraft, and aircraft engines. It has become the definitive guide to aircraft. Detailed descriptions of the aircraft, performance, systems and design are included. Jane's style is dry (arid) but well developed. Any reader whose interests are in the romance associated with a maker or model, or who delights in the vicarious thrill of climb power and roll rates will find this a dull text. The reader who need to determine which models were manufactured in which years and equipped with which engines will find a data trove within these pages.
