Highly detailed information on pepper diseases
The collective and editorially collaborative effort of Kenneth L. Pernezny, Pamela D. Roberts, John F. Murphy, and Natalie P. Goldberg, Compendium Of Pepper Diseases presents highly detailed information on pepper diseases. Written especially for plant pathologists, agricultural scientists, and commercial horticulturalists (though also useful to amateur gardeners as well), Compendium Of Pepper Diseases features black-and-white and color illustrations enhancing extensive descriptions of diseases, symptoms, as well as recommended control measures or treatments. An excellent, in-depth resource, Compendium Of Pepper Diseases is commended to the instructional and reference collections of Agricultural Science collections.

A good survey
I liked the scope of this book. Each chapter covered a different angle on death and dreams of death. This is all interspersed with dreams of Kramer's students from a college course. These are some of the most intriguing and fresh. This book does give up depth in it's attempts to cover so many angles--religious, philosophical, literary, psychological, shamanic... Also, Kramer basically accepts the notion of death in dreams as transformative and liberating. I, too, find it the most interesting approach, but what he presents in the book doesn't necessary lead to this conclusion.

Disabling Professions is a must for all professionals
The trouble with this book is that it makes you rethink your whole reason for being! It is an insightful review of how professions have incapacitated the people and issues they set out to help. It focused on medicine, law and the helping professions but is relevant to all of us. It makes you think - am I creating a reason for being? should I be really working myself out of a job? Empowering for those who feel they MUST employ a professional for all things - think again.

THE Classic of World Literature
The best edition of this great work that I have yet to see. The notes are outstanding, the background material useful, and the commentary erudite. A must edition for the serious study of Cervantes.

Beautifully illustrated YA biography of our 34th President
This unique format for a biography helps young people remember all about Ike's life, by intrducing each chapter with one of the many hats he wore. The illustations, in watercolor, line drawings, and historic photos, add tremendously to the story. The history is presented in an accurate and easily read style and covers Eisenhower's childhood, West Point years, WWII, Columbia Univ., the Presidency, and his retirement years. Perfect for ages 12 to adult.

What is going on here?
I don't understand it... There are thousands of books out there, all sorts of garbage that you can find at any run-of-the-mill bookstore, and when there is a provocative and profound study of the ailments of society, and HOW they can be CORRECTED...it cannot be heard - for it is OUT OF PRINT. And most people only care about the Fabio-cover pages and unimaginative fiction. As JKG puts it "[life in society] can also be pleasant - a womb in which the individual rests without the pain of mental activity or decision."

JKG wrote this in the Affluent Society : "Nothing counts so heavily against a man as to be found attacking the values of the public at large and seeking to substitute his own. Technically, his crime is arrogance. Actually, it is ignorance of the rules. In any case, he is automatically removed from the game." I'm not sure if he was 'seeking to substitute his own' ideas, but he gave an option for emancipation - to free oneselve from persuasive grasp of big business. So I guess Economics and the Public Purpose broke the rules by enlightening the readship to this option, and it is now destined to be left in the care of a few university libraries and the occasional footnote.

Tragic. It's a really good book.

Election Love Before Time

An Excellent Biblical defense of Biblical Predestination
The author covers all the bases in this Great Debate. Solidly proving it is God who chooses who is saved apart from any merit in man. Biblically proving from Romans 9 that it is God from eternity past who chose the elect, as The Apostle Paul unabashedly explains. Also points out how man, in his pride, tries to steal God's glory by inserting an extra-biblical concept, namely that God chooses man after man chooses God-diminishing Gods glory and deifying man. Also proving that mans "will" cannot account for his salvation. An honest reading of this book, and letting God be God, leaves no room for doubt that it is God who chooses who is saved, and who is sovereign over all creation (including over mans will) and will share His glory with no one!!

The elements of John Updike
Published in Unknown Binding by ()

Used price: $4.95
Average review score:

The Best (though dated) Book on Updike
The Elements of John Updike is the best study of John Updike's fiction that I have yet read. It is profound and very different from other studies in the depth and attention it pays the author and his writing. I have yet to read another book that so perfectly integrates all the diverse elements of his nature, the poetry, the fiction, the nonfiction, the studious nature and development of his fierce intelligence.

It is a shame that the book is now out-of-print. I hope that it will one day be updated and expanded, or at least reprinted, as it is still very much relevant, despite the fact that it covers only his origin through Couples. Still irreplaceable in its comprehension of the man who is quite possibly America's greatest living author.

By the way, this book is written by Alice and Kenneth Hamilton (Amazon seems to have forgotten one of them).
