John Lennon & Paul McCartney their magic and thier music
"John Lennon & Paul McCartney their magic and thier music" by Bruce Glassman is a great book. I found it very hard to put it down ,because it was a great reference to learn how The Beatles were formed ,by two great song writers. There is also a lot of information on were they grew up and what happend to them in their childhood. You can also find out what pushed Paul McCartney and John lennon to write the music that change the music world. So if you ever want to read a book to find out how PoP music started. I recommend that you read "John Lennon & Paul McCartney their magic and thier music."

AND HERE THEY ARE, THE BEATLES!
This is a book I would have LOVED to have owned as a child. This is a book I love NOW! Glassman does an excellent job of presenting the Beatles to a younger audience and his clear writing style compliments the intelligence of his readers.

The photographs are superb, as is the (I think) world's number one song writing duo, Lennon & McCartney, half of the world's number one band, THE BEATLES! This is such a treat to read. It's just what the doctor ordered and is just so much fun. Don't be surprised if you shake your bangs and start singing Beatle tunes.

I give this a round of thunderous applause and a hearty YEAH, YEAH, YEAH! I love it!

This book is great, has good pictures and interviews.
I couldn't put the book down. I read it from cover to cover without a single stop. Glassman did a good job at putting this one together. Of course almost anything you write about The Beatles will be great though.

What a life!
This book will give you a lot of insight to the wild web woven around and by Mac Rebennack. You'll learn more, and maybe to much, about his life, which will open your eyes to the lyrics he's written over the years and in what mental and physical condition he was in during those times. I've been a fan of Dr. John for as long as I can remember, but this book just amazed me! As much as I though I knew, I was wrong. His love of music got his soul in trouble with drugs and his fans were the ones who benefitted from his pain and suffering. He's grown, learned and bloomed into a clear, clean, insightful man. This book made me cry to think of all he went through to get to where he is today. I am lucky enough to own an autographed first edition. It is one of my most prized posessions. If you love New Orleans, Fonk, Blues, and Swampadelic music you MUST read this book!

Think Twice
Want to be a professional musician? Think twice. Dr. John confirms the musician's world as full of addicts, thieves, prostitutes, and swindlers, where almost no one can be trusted. I give the book five stars because it was interesting enough that I finished it, but it's a bittersweet tale of a man who loves music stumbling in a junkie's nightmare. I appreciate his honesty, his sense of humor, his optimism, and his love for music. As an amateur musician who used to contemplate a musical career, I'm glad I opted for a day job and a house in the suburbs. But the story is fascinating. Now I definitely want to check out some of his music.

A gripping tale of a true life music legend.
For anyone who has heard the music of Mac Rebennack a.k.a. Dr. John, this book is essential reading. His unique experiences and his sense of humor make it fascinating to read from beginning to end.

The good doctor's experiences in the music business make a great tale. From his early attachment to some of the New Orleans music greats, through his own experiences in clubs and recording studios, this makes for a terrific insight into what being a musician is all about.

I would highly recommend this book.

The Art & Music of John Lennon

Collectible price: $10.00

For Any John Lennon Fan Out There
This is a vital book for any fan, every piece of art & music John Lennon has ever done. John Robertson does a good job which other Lennon books miss: Detailed Account to all the art done with Yoko, solo music, and tour information. One of the best highlights is all the lost sessions, including the five year seclusion while John was house husband. Robertson covers so many songs that John has recorded that are not even released to this day. Robertson's book judges the man not for his mistakes, but for the works of art and music John Lennon has left behind for us all.

One of the best Lennon books out there
The pseudonymous John Robertson is one of the few writers on John Lennon (or the Beatles) who doesn't subscribe to any of the myths that clog this important artist's legacy. This book and his later chronology "Lennon 1940-1980" are essential reading for any serious fan, both scrupulously researched and entertaining, scholarly yet readable. From Lennon's teenage scribblings to his first recordings with the 'Quarry Men', to the years of Beatlemania and psychedelic experimentation, to Yoko Ono and avant-garde wackiness, to the 'Lost Weekend' and the shut-in Dakota years, to Lennon's final, sudden burst of creativity before the end - every twist and turn of this bizarre, brilliant career is chronicled with a sharp, critical but loving eye. There was a lot more to Lennon than 'Imagine', and a lot of it was truly surreal - whole books of stream-of-consciousness, pun-laden nonsense; 'art' exhibits filled with grapefruit, spoons and sponges; endless avant-noise recordings and live performances that came close to absolute madness; reviews, self-advertisements and letters to the editor; spoken word tapings, erotic lithographs and off-the-wall cartoons (Dali as done by Thurber) - the aesthetic debris cast off by a whirling dervish of creativity, a man who often did nothing but sleep for months on end but somehow could never squelch his burning desire to create and perform, the spark that dragged him from 'Please Please Me' to 'Cold Turkey', and then to 'Double Fantasy'. A definitive study of Lennon would require several volumes; in about 200 pages, Robertson provides a better (and mercifully shorter) analysis than almost anyone else so far.

rock climbing
This book is an excellent book and a great beginners guide to rock climbing as well as a guide and reference to those already into the sport and just want to check up on their skills. It provides a guide to knots and great moves. I even took this book with me on my first climb.

Good intro to mechanics of climbing
This book is a quick reading intro to the basic art of rock climbing. It gives good descriptions (with diagrams) of the various holds and ways to ascend the rock. As a beginning climber, this book has helped me better understand the mechanics of climbing.

The info in this book is amazing
the record by record and song by song account given by the authors is truly amazing! I like the little bits of info given about each song...What was going on during the recording...what certain lyrics were meant to mean....lots of tidbits like those, that add up to an informative and fun read for any Aerosmith fan!

The Complete Guide to Music of Aerosmith - CD Sized Book
This is a great book for any Aerosmith collector.
I loved it. The book is the size of a CD, but this book is packed with great reviews of each album and songs to their albums. It ends at Nine Lives, as this album was just released once the book was released.

I was hesitant at first to order it, since it was smaller than their other books available, but there are some great photos of the boys and the book was very well compiled.

Get it, it's worth the money.

The Complete Guide to the Music of the Beach Boys
Published in Paperback by Omnibus Press (1997)
Authors: Andrew Doe and John Tobler
Amazon base price: $8.95
Average review score:

A convenient, informative guide to the Beach Boys' music
The Beach Boys' catalog has been mangled and exploited to a nearly unprecedented degree. Even few pop groups' music rewards the persistent listener and collector as does the Beach Boys'. Doe and Tobler do a service to both casual and committed fans; they offer a guide to most of the groups' (legitimate) releases, accompanied by (sometimes amusingly biased) commentary. One of the better entries in this series of cd- sized reference books, and a worthwhile addition to any Beach Boys fan's collection.

Compact size, much info
A compact guide to the music of the Beach Boys, whose CD catalog has been neglected and mangled. A great overview of all of their songs and albums, some of which are the most important in rock history. This also tells the story of three brothers, their cousin, and neighbor. It covers their successes, trials, and tragedies.

A must for any Cream fan!
For you Cream fans waiting for the "reunion", this will make you long all the more. John Platt does a very good job on retracing the history of the band's recordings, with the emphasis on the Disraeli Gears album. The book does spend too much time on the subject of exact dates and many of the inconsistent accounts leave you with a feeling of; "so what was the real version"? But, all aside, the best documented account I have found on one of the most talented bands in rock/blues history.

As a big Jack Bruce fan, I found myself reinforced with what I always believed: Jack was THE driving force behind the band and had more of his influence been allowed to develop, their survival may have been prolonged.

Cream of The Crop
The life and career of Eric Clapton has been extensively covered in various other books, but there are a precious few about the definitive power trio he was apart of in the 1960's. Cream is one of the best rock bands from the 60's and Disraeli Gears is their best album. John Platt not only gives a crisp and insightful look into the making of the album, but to the origins of the band itself. Mr. Platt supplies us with liberal doses of the bassist and lead vocalist Jack Bruce's thoughts as well as commentary from drummer Ginger Baker and Mr. Clapton. The book also details their live work which is the band is renowned for. Mr. Platt has written a superb book that is another great volume in the Classic Rock Series.

Paul Weller: My Ever Changing Moods
Published in Hardcover by Omnibus (1996)
Author: John Reed
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

A gratifyingly accurate account of a phenomenal artist...
I feel that it behooves anyone with impeccable taste to seek out and listen to the essential recordings of the subject of this book. Paul Weller is a remarkable songwriter, a fine musician and an involuntary icon. Reed's product of research articulately underscores these points and also sheds light on other attributes. As an American, it's tough to find other "enlightened" individuals-however, those who have been exposed to Weller's body of work have subsequnetly become converts. In short, if you consider yourself a well-versed appreciator of excellent contemperary music and haven't heard of Paul Weller, I highly recommend that you seek out his recordings and read books like this one.

Good book about a great artist
When a man in one of 'the dirtiest businesses' (copyright Ian Brown) around, manages to come out the other end of 20-odd years of it, after three sucessful incarnations, countless hit singles and albums, and still has his integrity intact, what better subject for a bio can you get.

As for the book, the author remains unobtrusive in the story telling, which helps no end (see the Stone Roses bio) in the reading.

A great (continuing) story, parts of which have been well told before (A Beat Concerto, Mr Cool's Dream), but sucessfully well told again.

About as clear as you can get with out being in Paul's head!
From the moment I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down again (which was hard because it's really heavy). It's packed with more detail than an encyclopedia and is an absolute must for any Weller fan. Reed's writing talents are clear and focused, his use of descriptive imagery immaculate and the research that went into this book is exemplary. Though Weller doesn't talk directly to the author, the book is incredibly well written and includes hundreds of quotes here from friends, family and the Modfather himself to enrich and complement Reed's excellent biography. There's not much more I can say except go out and buy it!

Tales of Giant Snakes: A Historical Natural History of Anacondas and Pythons

This book is cool.
this book is cool, i also know the guy, he works at the high schoo

A delightful debunking of the myths about the biggest snakes
Hollywood has not been kind to the long constrictor. In its view, they drop out of trees or rise up out of rivers, big as buses and determined to squeeze the guts out of that hapless human being who has wandered within reach of their treacherous or lecherous (depending upon the sex of the victim) coils. Though big snakes have, in fact, never been much interested in people, people have always been fascinated by them. Sensational stories of villagers squashed and gobbled up by monstrous serpents fill the accounts of explorers and early "naturalists." For all the satisfying fear they engender in far removed readers, such stories do the snakes injustice and divert attention from their remarkable morphology and living habits. These authors are scientists, but they are also literate and obviously snake enthusiasts. So while they stick to the facts, they write clearly and engagingly in defense of remarkable animals who, when it comes to encounters with humans, are much more sinned against than sinning. There are chapters about feeding and breeding of course. But there is also a serious review of the extraordinary stories that impute lengths of sixty or more feet to anacondas and pythons. By the time the myths have been detonated, the terrified lay reader is ready for an honest answer to the question, "How long can a snake grow?" Read the book to find out. But I will say it is longer than some buses.

The Facts and Nothing But the Facts
I purchased this book on a whim, knowing of the authors' credibility. When I got in to it, I realized it was going to be more than I expected. This work discredits one by one all the ridiculous length claims on snakes from around the world. Instead of these (sometimes outrageous) claims, the authors provide you with THE FACTS AND NOTHING BUT THE FACTS!

It is about time herpers spread the honest truth about these species to the general public, rather than the typical "My python should hit thirty-five feet because that's the maximum size!".

This book is an educational experience for ANYONE with an interest in these species or herps in general. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

The human attack accounts are pretty eye-opening, too!

Desperately Seeking Zimmerman
As a long time Dylan fan, I try to learn about him as much as possible. Rock's greatest poet (w/ apologies to Jim Morrison fans, Dylan gets the title hands down.) is always worth examination. Some of his lyrics rank as fine poetry. This is probably the most important song writer of the second half of the 20th Century. Unfortunately, this collection is out of print but it is worthwhile to seek out. It contains many articles and interviews spanning Dylan's entire career. It includes writing by Allen Ginsberg, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney among others. It is a collection of Dylan lore by Dylan's companions and cohorts. It features homages paid by many who were influenced by this great bard. Fans of Dylan would do well to read this book. It is very imformative and lends some insight into the career development of Dylan. The interviews with Ronnie Wood, Roy Orbison and Eric Clapton are revealing. It is amazing when you consider the stature of the people who were influenced and touched by Dylan. Tributes by Johnnie Cash and Bruce Springsteen also highlight the book. It is a compelling look at a man ranked as one of the 100 most important Americans of the 20th Century.

Literary bouiliabaise (that's a compliment)
Wanted Man is a great song that Dylan wrote for Johnny Cash and an apt title for the book because Mr. Dylan has touched many lives in a deep and profound way. This book is a fun collection of articles, interviews, etc. that's often more fun and illuminating than standard biography writing. I have also looked for the 1st collection in this series, to no avail. If you like this book, also check out Bob Dylan: the Early Years, another fine collection of writings.

Worth reading for hard core Dylan freaks.
Edited by the late John Bauldie (killed in a helicopter crash in England after a soccer match in late 1996), founder of the popular Dylan fan magazine _The Telegraph_, this book offers some insighful comments culled from friends and acquaintances of His Bobness ranging from Bauldie himself to Ray Orbison, Patti Smith and Eric Clapton. Illustrated throughout, this book begins with anecdotes from Dylan's days at the University of Minnesota and follows his career through the early '90's. Includes fascinating "sermons" of Bob's from when he was in his Christian phase in the late '70's and early 1980's. According to Bauldie, this book is the second in a series. The first book is called _All Across The Telegraph_ but I've never been able to find it anywhere
