great adaptation
if you know pierre corneille and his work, you will admire kushner for adapting a play of him so successfully. theater full of illusions. what is real what's not. 17th century and year 2000. many things have changed but the magic on and about stage still remains. kushner gives a great example of adapting a play. the characters may speak in poetry but 20th centuries flair is obvious.

Nice analysis of the Meditations
Hadot manages an academically rigorous analysis of the _Meditations_ while also bringing out the vibrancy and robust spirituality which must have accompanied the ancient philosophies. Where most secondary sources for the Stoics focus upon dry-as-dust technical logistics (which the ancients universally decried), Hadot brings to the foreground the true purpose of ancient meditation techniques, and provides readers some hints of what it might have been like to study Stoicism as a life-philosophy instead of merely an academic curiosity. The book also provides a wonderful synopsis of Epictetus' teaching and style, which strongly influenced M.A. A fine companion with Hadot's _Philosophy As a Way of Life_.

An Intellectual History of Liberalism

Manent breathes new life into old works
AN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF LIBERALISM has the deceptive appearance of a survey of liberal thought- one of many such overviews. What Manent presents instead is page after page of brilliant, original insights into the ideas of Locke, Hume, Machiavelli, Rousseau, Hobbes, Constant, and Toqueville, among others. I stopped reading in surprise every few paragraphs in some sections, to find my understanding of an old & familiar concept significantly altered- shown in an utterly novel light. Anyone interested in early liberal philosophy will find this book extremely valuable.

Singers must have this book.
A most necessary companion for singers of all levels preparing French song literature. Pierre Bernac is full of insightful interpretations of much of the standard French literature and some not-so-standard, as well. Excellent translations and detailed interpretations make the book an invaluable resource.

Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci: Scale Architectual Paper Model
Published in Hardcover by Paper Models International (1991)
Authors: Pierre Guerin and Anne-Marie Piaulet
Amazon base price: $13.95
Average review score:

Great Fun and Very Educational!
This is just plain fun. I kind of expected it to be die-cut, punch out kind of stuff, but it was actually something of challenge. That's fine by me because I build paper models as a hobby. I guess the scissors across the front cover should've been a clue.

The finished products look great on your desk and the screened color and detail look quite realistic.

My only gripe with this excellent piece is that it doesn't include Leo's most intriguing work, his winged flying machine!

It's Not Easy Being Big ... A Big Hit!
In this delightful, colorful book Big Bird and Elmo learn an important lesson about themselves. Big Bird is unhappy because he is too big to do things with his friends, and Elmo is sad because he is too small! In the end both learn a valuable lesson about their respective sizes.

We have a 17 month old, and this has been her favorite book since she was 7 months old. In fact, this book has been to Europe and back because she couldn't part with it.

The author does a wonderful job showing children that regardless of their size, they all have an important contribution to make.

Jean-Pierre Brisset, prince des penseurs
Published in Unknown Binding by Editions Ramsay ()
Author: Marc Décimo
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A serious biography of an ... extraordinary ... linguist?
We are not descended from apes, we are descended from... frogs! The proof lies in language, and Jean-Pierre Brisset (1837-1919), a one-time language teacher and later railway-station supervisor, demonstrates it from the linguistic testimony of French mainly, but also of German and Italian. How? Puns. The truth of our origins lies in the puns we can make in our own language. Heady stuff indeed. Brisset's works are quite untranslatable into English, since they relie entirely on French puns. Brisset was dead serious, though. Jules Romains, with other confederates, among whom Andre Breton and Marcel Duchamp, was so amused by Brisset's ravings that he invited him to Paris to be crowned "Prince des Penseurs." Brisset was already in his late seventies. Yet, he was so taken by Baba, a.k.a. Yvonne de Knopp, a model of the painter Picart-le-Doux, that, after the banquet in his honour, he asked if, for a hundred francs (US$300 of today)... er... well... perhaps... er... yes? His frogs, our ancestors, were a randy lot too. Marc Décimo, a professor of literature, tells it all, leaving nothing out, and with excellently chosen excerpts of Brisset's er... seminal? yes, seminal, works. Monty Python, eat your 'eart out! Brisset's outdone you!
