Herzog & De Meuron: Natural History
Another object book with content that matches the originality of the design. Herzog & De Meuron, the Basel-based architects, are best known for their art museums, but also for creating buildings that are works of art--even when the program is as mundane as a railroad signal box. This companion to the recent CCA exhibition is an anthology of interviews, stimulating essays by artists and clients, and pictures of objects that have inspired them, in addition to an illustrated catalogue of their 200 buildings and projects. His pride, our fall : recovering from the Trudeau revolution
Published in Unknown Binding by Key Porter Books ()
Author: Kenneth McDonald
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $11.40
Average review score:

Finally, some truth about Trudeau.
Since the death of former Prime Minister Trudeau, the media has waxed poetic on the man's charm, charisma and zest for life. While not one to speak ill of the dead, I found myself sickened by the accolades accorded to the late Trudeau.

In the 70s, the Canadian dollar was worth $1.07 U.S. Today, it is worth 66 cents. This devaluation of our dollar and the corresponding devaluation Canada, are thanks largely to Trudeau's socialist rule. From multiculturalism to official bilingualism to the National Energy Policy, his policies demonstrated an arrogance and lack of fiscal responsibility that truly crippled Canada.

<> is a keenly insightful work. Its author was not blinded by his subject's charm or sex appeal; McDonald clearly describes Trudeau's legacy and, in so doing, paints a damning picture of an egotistical and self-satisfied leader. It serves as an effective cautionary tale for Canadian and international readers alike.

Fantastic Portrait of Breton Folk Culture
Helias's book is one of the classics of a genre known as "literary ethnography." Works in this style are designed both to provide a thorough understanding of life in a community as well as to artistically portray the experience of doing field research through well-written and elegant prose. Helias grew up in the community that he returned to study. Consequently, he knows about the daily life of his community, and his training in European folklife studies provides him with an amazing resource for writing about the quotidian realities of Breton folk culture. The book provides solid ethnographic description of daily life in the peasant village, and he writes of the ordinary and extraordinary experiences of daily life with equal grace and ease. The book reads beautifully, and the insights are timely and even more poignant 20 years after he completed his insightful study. This book is an inspiration to writers who present studies of folklife throughout the world, and it is essential reading for anyone interested in ethnographic writing.

A new translation of The Phenomenon of Man
"You hold The Human Phenomenon" in your hands and one way to understand this is to point to your human agency in grabbing the book. But it is just as true to say that you hold this book because the universe has labored for billions of years to reach a point in its complexification where it can now bring forth something new through you. It comes to you with its own ideas for your future, for what is needed now for the universe's unfolding story is not a new galaxy or a new star. What is needed now is a new form of human being. -- From the Foreword by Brian Swimme, author of The Hidden Heart of the Cosmos

This work by the priest, paleontologist and geologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is his book of the Earth, a discovery and an epic journey to open the way out for humanity in a time of world conflict and release the spirit of the Earth. Teilhard guides the reader back in space-time to experience the birth of our planet as it emprisons the human future in its globe and motion, then forward, through the emergence of life, the birth of thought and socialization, and the unique mode of human unfolding as humanity covers the whole planet in an entirely new membrane, the Noosphere. Through a close study of Teilhard's essays, letters, notebooks and retreat notes, his autobiography and key biographical and interpretive studies, poet and scholar Sarah Appleton-Weber aims to represent Teilhard's thought accurately in this translation which is based on a careful comparison of four versions of the French text.

Analyzing Power with Enki Bilal
I am SO GLAD that amazon.com finally has some Enki Bilal graphic novels in-stock. He is an amazing illustrator and he is very well-respected in Europe and Japan. Unfortunately, not many people have heard of him in the United States. He was born in Belgrade in 1951 but moved to Paris when he was 9. He published his first story in 1975 and has since then written and illustrated many graphic novels. His most famous graphic novel series is the Nikopol Trilogy. The last book in the Nikopol Trilogy called "Equator Cold" was chosen as the Book of the Year in France! It is the only comic book ever to recieve such a prestigous award.

The Hunting Party was originally published in 1983 and was written by Pierre Christin with whom Enki Bilal has done many other graphic novels. It is about ten of Communist Politburo's members gathering together for a short hunting party. Their leader is Wassily Alexandrovich, a man whose face is paralyzed and thus cannot talk. All of the other men start telling their stories and how they came to know Alexandrovich. Through falshbacks we learn much about the backgrounds of all the men. Finally, when the actual hunting begins, it turns out to be a game of assasination for a never-ending power struggle between C.C.C.P. leaders.

It is a beautiful story and it really demonstrates the de-moralising effects of power. Pierre Christin does a good job of mixing historical fact and political fiction.

The ART is absolutely marvelous. I can never say enough about the art. Really, you should see it for yourself. It is very realistic. The colors are mostly water color and thus the art has a "fluid feel" to it. Enki Bilal is truly, a master. I also like the size of the book. It is fairly large (12" X 9"). This is the typical size of European comics which I prefer over the small American comic pages. This edition of the book also comes with a series of illustrations and poetry done by Bilal and Christin in 1990.

I really like the Bilal/Christin collaboration. I plan to buy their other book together called "The Black Order Brigade" (it is the only one published in English besides the Hunting Party).

Finally, the translation is very good too. I have some other French graphic novels whose stories I still cannot fully comprehend due to the bad translations. But The Hunting Party reads well.

Another Lamaze great!
I got this for my son's upcoming first birthday, and I was pleasantly surprised at the cute touch and feel elements as well as the high quality mirror. Most mirrors in baby books are mylar and are very distorted, but this one gives a true reflection, and it is situated at the top of the book so it's seen from every page. This book would be great for even young infants because it has short simple text and large illustrations. It features different jungle animals and children, with a touch and feel element on each animal's picture. For example, there is a satin leaf covering a giraffe's face that you lift up. Text reads "Giraffe has eyes. Peek at me. Peek at you." The opposing page has a lion with a felt mane that reads "Lion has hair. So do you." Each page encourages the baby to look in the mirror. I know my son will love this, and he can be a pretty discriminating book critic! He is fascinated by touch and feel and lift the flap books, especially by Lamaze. They are the only ones I will buy sight unseen, because I know they are good quality. Will not disappoint!
