recommendable book
This is the best one among many dictionaries of classical mythology. And its English translation "The Dictionary of Classical Mythology" is maybe on the second status, although the latter includes some mistakes. I hope this English version should be revised as soon as possible.

One of the best books written about the Quints!
This one was one of the best books about the Dionne's. It wasn't at all one-sided like so many others. The pitures are excellent, and Mr. Burton's style is smooth and understandable. It allows you to form you own opinion and understand what really happpend, since it was such a complicated story, with alot of twist and turns. Enjoy!

Disenchanted

Disenchanted: a feminist book before feminism?
Written in 1906 by the famous French author-traveller-orientalist Pierre Loti, "Disenchanted" is about the distress of well-to-do young Turkish women of the beginning of the century secluded in their home's harems. The book is about an epistolar relation between a young and beautiful Circassian girl uprooted from her beloved country and brought up in Istambul, and a middle aged French author, André Lhéry, in whom we can easily recognize Loti himself. The reader is soon struck by the contradiction between the high, European-derived, material and intellectual standards of the young women, and the very strict and oppressive cultural context of their Muslim milieu. The cruelty of it all rests in the intellectual emancipation of these young women which brings them to a very clear consciousness of their dominated condition. The story then is about the exchange of views and ideas between Lhéry and three of these women (cousins), by letter and, occasionally, upon meeting secretly (and dangerously) in secluded spots in Istamboul. The love of Loti for the Orient, its people, and particularly the Asian shore of old Istambul is manifest in his elegant and subtle descriptions of the landscapes and districts of the city. The encounters with his three young friends are marked by humor, wit and subtle sensuality. We could even speak of an out-of-date eroticism, manifest in the unveiling of an eye or a few square inches of a pretty face. In this work, we find nostalgia, fatality, and a very interesting inside look into the Turkish culture of a century ago. But Loti's book is also a clear and explicit manifest for the emancipation of the Muslim woman, many years before feminism rose as a driving force in the West.

Dolphins & Porpoises: A Worldwide Guide

A Superb Introduction
Jean-Pierre Sylvestre has taken great care in writing this book. Every known species of dolphin and propoise is covered, and he includes a wealth of facts about each species. Take care, this isn't a whale watching book, the only whales covered are the killer whale, false killer whale, pygmy killer whale and long and short finned pilot whales.

I was particularly impressed with some of the rare photographs of river dolphins such as the amazon river dolphin, ganges river dolphin and Chinese river dolphins that I have not seen in other books. Of course, he also has spectacular photos of the more common species. The ones without photographs were the Franciscana, Hourglass dolphin, Fraser's dolphin, Chilean dolphin, Burmeister's propoise, Vaquita and Spectacled porpoise all others included at least one photograph.

Included with the description of each species is a world map of their ranges, a pencil sketch of each species (especially useful if there is no photograph), when they were first identified, diet, population, other common names, reproduction information, a sketch of their skulls and interestingly enough sound emission information (frequency range and where the research was done etc...). This is only part of the information included, he's got all the common information about size and field identification too of course.

What I like about the book is that it can easily be used as a browsing book for people with a casual interest if they want to ID a dolphin they've seen, or somone looking for a little more detail.

There is also and excellent introduction to the book which includes general information about all species, the taxonomy, sound production and hearing, fossil record information and much more.

You can't really go wrong with the book. If you like this book, I also suggest Eyewitness Handbooks "Whales Dolphins and Porpoises" by Mark Carwardine which is just as good and covers all of the dolphins and porpoises plus all the whales. That text is a little less technical without the skulls or sound frequency information and is geared more towards whale watchers.

The Drawings of Georges Seurat

best selection of charcoal drawings--landscapes and portrait
For both study and pleasure these charcoal drawings, mostly landscapes and portraits, show the richness and depth of drawing that can never be equalled in his paintings. He draws from the inside out with very few outlines; rather the soft charcoal merges with the texture of the paper to build mass and volume, so that the viewer sees light and dark, rather than shape and form. The drawings are soft and strong. Beautiful. I hope this book gets back in print.

Very solid, helpful guide
This book is, well, encyclopedic. Drapeau knows his stuff. And he shares it with us. He doesn't shy away from the details and he uses his extensive knowledge of the underlying chemistry to good effect. I would have to say that this book would be good for someone who has outgrown the "Basics"and "Introduction" books and wants to expand their horizon. A must for every winemakers library.
