A good book!
Mark Rector has put together an interesting volume that serves both as a historical reference to old Scottish swordplay, and a guide to those individuals interested in the recreation of old styles of sword combat. Happily, it is also easy to read, and nicely illustrated. As the author of "THE ART AND SCIENCE OF FENCING," "THE INNER GAME OF FENCING," and "THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE SWORD," and the editor/publisher of "FENCERS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE," I recommend this book.

An insightful look at the REAL history of Native Americans.
Paul A. W. Wallace offers us an unbiased account of the history of the Native American people of Pennsylvania. Each chapter made me want to learn more about the individual tribe that was represented in its pages and inspired me to continue reading. Mr. Wallace does not ever compare the European settlers with the Indians and say that one was more savage than the other. He merely points out that the Native American people were more intelligent than what the history books would have us believe. Paul Wallace introduces us to an innocent culture and guides us through the necessary metamorphosis of a land besieged by "conquerors." If you're interested in the plight of Native Americans, or in the history of Pennsylvania, this book should become the keystone of your library!

Middle East on a Shoestring
When one takes the initial steps of such an exotic trip as the middle east, a guide is needed to educate yourself on everything. Even the experienced traveler will find their trips to Europe did little to prepare them for the Middle East. This is why this guide does so much for the independant, and is so invaluable. Lonely planet has a history of helping people travel on a meagre budget, however gives a warm and caring introduction as to why indulging yourself occasionaly in the more expensive treasures can make your vaction. The authors expell the myths of all around violence in the region and firmly warns you where not to go. The religion and customs sections are so informative that I found myself prepared for the basics of Islamic life and ready to learn more. This book inspired me to take the unbeaten path and to still take in the wonderful tourist draws. Ive browsed through the two other major guides on the middle east, they dont compare to the thorough down to earth writing that Lonely Planet produces. Occasionaly, there could be more entries on Long Distance Travel (getting there and away) and there could have been more mention of the smaller budget tours that are offered in the region, however I still contend that this is the best pick for Middle East travel guides for all traveler of all Budgets.

Great Lessons in De-Risking, in a Very Readable Book !
After the Enron meltdown, risk management is as hot as fire. You can't pick up the newspaper without stories about all the risks facing businesses and investors.

I run a medium size business in a big city. If you want to "de-risk" a company, you need to learn from managers who are already doing it and doing it well. This book has very detailed cases about the risk management programs at companies like Microsoft and DuPont with managers telling their own stories. The book is short on fancy theories and long on practical ideas.

I admit I was surprised to see Chase bank among these elite companies. Chase wrote off $500 million because of Enron. But you have to wonder how much more they would have written off without a good risk management program. No one ever said these systems are perfect. The Chase chapter even describes two big problems the bank had with their bookkeeping and how they were fixing them.

This book has everything you need to get started in a good risk management program. Lord knows businesses had better manage their risks or they're history.

Well-rounded intro
Music in Sequence is a book I found several years ago when I first began playing with MIDI sequencing. Written for a rank beginner, it briefly teaches the basics of reading music and finding notes on the keyboard. However, the heart of the book is making good music using a sequencer. The authors take you step-by-step through 15 sequences, each designed to teach you the techniques for making the most of the power inherent in sequencing. In addition to the specific instructions for each piece, there are suggestions for modifying the sequence in different ways, and additional pieces you can use as a seed for developing the ideas in each lesson further on your own.

Something I particularly enjoyed about this book is its use of a wide variety of musical styles, and the whimsical selections they chose--everything from baroque (Pachelbel's Canon and Bach's Crab Canon) to classical ballet, to marching band music (Sousa's the Liberty Bell), to Gershwin, to modern pop, to the theme from the Muppet Show. It would be hard to improve on what these authors have done in developing an intro to the complex world of MIDI.
