An Amazing Dylan Book
The second volume of "Bob Dylan, Performing Artist" covers the less understood, less appreciated, but often more rewarding second part of Dylan's career. Williams convincingly argues that much of Dylan's finest work came during this period, and his writing may have you digging out your old copy of "Shot of Love" or "Empire Burlesque" (or your bootleg tapes of those 1979-80 "born again" shows) to hear what he's talking about.

The Grand Master Returns
A memo to NorthAtlantic Books: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for publishing the collected stories of Theodore Sturgeon. I have been a devoted fan of his (and here I call your attention to the derivation of the word 'fan' from 'fanatic') for more than 40 years now. To see his works available in this fine edition is not only a nostalgic thrill, but a pleasure.
I am such a Sturgeon addict that I find it hard to critcize any of his work negatively. Volume 8 give no reason to do so, but this in not to say that every tale is equal in quality. Superlative levels of creation and craftsmanship can be expected of no writer; but I leave your opinions to be drawn by yourself.
For what comes through this volume is Sturgeon's view of humanity, view of fear and evil in the world (and beyond, of course, but we know that his s-f work is metaphorical for the human condition any way), his incredible optimistic hopes for the success of the human spirit. It's what all his work is infected with, even when he is at his darkest.
If you are acquainted with Theodore Sturgeon, go ahead and splurge in time and funds get in touch with an old friend. If you are unacquainted with him, splurge and make a new friend. You'll not be sorry.

One great book
To everyone, I wanted to take a moment to tell you how wonderful this book is. I first read it in Junior High School, I fell in love with it. I mustve read it 3 or 4 times since. Its a wonderful story, like all Steele books it leaves the reader spellbound at the end. The description says ages 9-12 but you can be MUCH MUCH older to enjoy this book. It is really a book for anyone with a sense of adventure and an imagination. :)

A must Have Book!
I absolutely loved this book. I love cats to begin with, but the story was excellent. My favorite cat was the one who has his eyes and mouth wide open. The drawings are awesome-this is a must have book for anyone!!

Really gets kids started
I bought this book for my son over 25 years ago on the recommendation of a bookseller, who had to find it in the store and call me to come and buy it. My six year old (at the time) simply read the book and UNDERSTOOD chess immediately. He beat adults within about a month. The book has different games to show the movement and strategies for each piece. It's fabulous! I wish the publisher would print it again. For now, I'm trying to buy it "used" for my niece.

Wisdom from a master
Stafford was a great poet; he also writes about writing like a great teacher. I heartily endorse this book to anyone who has read "Writing the Austrialian Crawl." If you haven't read that book, read it first, and then read this one. This book is a posthumous collection of magazine articles, interviews, and other scattered writings. While it is delight to me, and anyone else who loved Stafford, it is not as effective at demonstrating Stafford's approach to writing. That said, Stafford's generosity and humanity shine in this collection. It is worth reading, even if you are not a writer.

Another great Northwall book
1100 years had passsed since The Time of the Fire, and civilization was slowly returning to what had been the Mississippi Valley. The male-dominated plains nomads had begun to settle peacefully around the citadel of Northwall, where they freely married with townsfolk. A new culture was evolving. But all was not well. Pelbarigan's conservative families longed for the old times: when their city led and Northwall followed; when plainsmen and citadelfolk were enemies. . .when women ordered & men obeyed!
