book review
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I have moved to the Boston area only a year ago, and this book has helped me learn a lot about the life in and around Cape Cod since 1621. The characters seem almost real with all the trials and tribulations they have had to suffer. I highly recommned it to any reader who enjoys historical novels (the best!).

Leave your brain at the door.
You will forget about the outside world when you read this; nothing but sand, wind, and water. Plus some natural history, local folklore, a few shipwreck tales. Typical Thoreau; he finds beauty, interest, detail in the wilderness. The desolate landscape will help to clear your mind. Highly recommended.

Cape Cod is the ultimate desert island beach book.
Each year, in preparation for a week's retreat to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I go in search of a book that would be perfect for a sojourn on a desert island. Of course, the Outer Banks are hardly deserted--the locals have printed up Wege's infamous photograph of a packed stretch of Coney Island with the caption "Nags Head, circa 2000 A.D."--but there we are on an island for seven days, my husband experiencing near death in the waves while I read. Sometimes we stop these pursuits and prowl the beach. Mostly we live as if we're the last two people on earth (which is easier in the off-peak season). I've learned that not every book is right for this way of life. The perfect desert island book has to celebrate the place you are in, not transport you. It should offer a tinge of society, because, after all, a human is a social animal, but it should not make you yearn achingly for what has been left behind nor should you be so repelled by it that you will never fit in again when you leave the island (you always leave the island). It should have some narrative sweep to withstand the competition of the seascape. It should make you think, at least a little: you want the stress to wash out to sea, not the little grey cells. Cape Cod by Henry David Thoreau is the benchmark by which I've chosen beach material for several years. it is the quintessential celebration of littoral life. If you are on the beach, you appreciate it all the more; if you are not, well, at least you know vividly what you are missing. There is drama, as in the specter of villagers racing to the shore at the news of a shipwreck. There is information, as in what part of the clam not to eat, how the Indians trapped gulls for food, how a lighthouse really works. There is Thoreau's contagious respect for solitude, his occasional crankiness, and that magic trick of his that can suck in high school sophomores and get them through his books without so much as a whimper. There is one flaw to Cape Cod: brevity. It lasts about a day and a half on the Robinson Crusoe plan. This is not to say that it does not withstand re-reading, it does, but at some point after you have committed it to memory, you may wish for the collected works of Shakespeare and move onto the Bard's beach play, The Tempest.

Eccentrics; By David Weeks
I have listened to this book through a audio system and it was great and comforting too. I too would have liked to know more personal details about eccentrics lives if possible , and I'd like to see more of Dr. Weeks writing.

What's the Difference Between a Screwball and an Eccentric?
I first learned about David Weeks and this book while I was looking at the shower curtain in my bathroom absentmindedly one day. My roommate had cut out various pictures from magazines and glued them to a clear plastic curtain and then glued a dark blue plastic curtain behind it to create a nice mosaic. Something nice to look at while showering. Well, behold, I was looking at it that day and I started to read an interview with David Weeks that was on the back of one of the pictures in which the interviewer asks him "what's the difference between a screwball and an Eccentric?" It caught my attention and so I dismantled the shower curtain in order to remove the picture and find out all that I could about David Weeks and "Eccentrics." In the little clipping of the interview that appeared on the back of the picture, David Weeks claimed that eccentrics have less stress in their lives, have bigger bank accounts, and are more popular than those who aren't. He also claimed that they get sick less and usually only need to see a doctor once every decade or so! If you think that just this little snippet of an interview about this book that came into my life was interesting, then you will definitely like this book. I think that this book could save lives. I really do. I wouldn't just say that about any book.

A TEN star book
Ever have a book that you not only read and re-read buy buy copies for your friends and new copies for yourself when the copies you have lent out to friends never return? This is one of those books. And just shy 300 pages. My sister Willow is the one I thank for pointing out to me on an outing a few years back. And it is a book that has paid for itself many a time over.

Now maybe it is the fact that I have relatives in England or that because of my Moms MPD etc that I am not afraid of those who are different and who have this quirkiness that makes lemonade out of lemons. I do know I so enjoyed this book because it provided even more insight into how we here in the states treat those who march to their own drummer. As one of the authors noted, we here in the states either lock em up or medicate them, whereas in England they are seen in many ways as a national treasure.

The Chapters on the Four Hundred Years of Eccentrics, The Scientists, Eccentrics in Childhood and the Eccentric Personality and of course sexual eccentrics are what I savored. Like the hysteria in Salem, MA, in the states that saw witches as eccentric and not acceptable. Did you know that Davy Crockett was described as eccentric by his contemporaries? or that female eccentrics have over the centuries often been from the well to do classes?

While great scientists like Galileo, Kepler, Darwin and Mendel and todays recent additions Drrs Richard Feynman and Kary Mullis were all though to be genius as well as eccentrics? And then we have California's own Lillie Hitchcock Coit who was known from day one as an eccentric and a wild woman who built a firehose shapes building in SF because she had such a love for firefighters in and out of bed. She was considered a bohemian and became San Francisco's mascot.

And those practicing open marriage sex sans marriage or group communal etc sexual unions like Jack Reed etc were both considered eccentrics as well as outcasts. Yet like most eccentrics and rebels eccentrics amongst the human and civil rights movements, then feminist movements have been the ones who have brought about the women's right to vote or like Margaret Sanger rights to reproductive choices.

Another excellent Missing Manual
Another excellent Missing Manual product. There is more to iPhoto than meets the eye, and this book covers every detail in a conversational and user-friendly tone, without being cute or obtuse. You'll learn not only how to use iPhoto, but how to overcome some of its limitations, such as creating additional photo libraries after the first one fills up. The layout is attractive and legible. The detailed coverage of digital photography basics - buying a camera and taking good pictures - is another bonus.

As I've said of other Missing Manuals, if I were to write a guide, I'd want it to read like this one. Highly recommended.

goes way beyond iPhoto basics
This is a must have for any digital photographer planning to use iPhoto. Many books of this sort aren't much more than an explanded version of what should be in the program's help files. This book goes way beyond. One of the co-authors is a professional photographer; the first quarter of the book is his well written explanation of the essentials of composition and (digital) photography. The bulk of the book describes not just how you can use iPhoto, but how you ought to use it and why. I found the advice provided practical and non obvious; it has made me much more productive in my use of this software. As well, the authors provide pointers to some downloadable plug ins that make iPhoto much more useful - I can't imagine going without the iPhoto library manager and the betterhtml plug in. The only downside of the book is that it will be much less useful in a year or two after Apple has updated their product - but in the meantime, but it, use it, and enjoy it.

A "must-have" instructional reference
Collaboratively written by David Pogue (computer columnist for the New York Times); Joseph Schorr (software product manager and Macworld contributor); and Derrick Story (professional photographer and manager of the O'Reilly Network), iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a straightforward, comprehensive, authoritative, and thoroughly user-friendly guide to the free iPhoto 1.1.1. software for the Macintosh OS X. iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a superbly written and presented introduction to making the best use of iPhoto ability to create works of art from the footage of a digital camera. From setting up slide shows; to designing pages in a photography book; to file management, lighting techniques, and more, iPhoto: The Missing Manual is a "must-have" instructional reference for anyone seeking to make the most of their iPhoto software.

A wonderful introduction to asian religion
This book was a lovely, focused introduction to Hinduism and Buddhism, with a little Jainism and Taoism thrown in for good measure. I loved Cambpell's abilitiy both to find the lovely, telling details in each of these traditions, and to find the overarching themes--especially the idea of Brahman, which he sees as underpinning all of them. I also particularly loved Cambpell's sense of humor--in one section he's describing the reincarnation of the soul, and says it's putting on and taking off bodies "like a shopper at Macy's trying on scarves"! That page is marked in my copy by the tea I sputtered because I laughed so loudy.
The only downside from my point of view was an emphasis in the sections on Buddhism on Mahayana as opposed to Theravada Buddhism. Though he does discuss the older branch of the Buddhist tradition, it is somewhat in passing. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this book enormously.

Finally!
Having devoured Campbell's work in the nineties, I'd almost given up on his unpublished essays and lectures ever seeing the light of day. Then came Thou Art That and now Myths Of Light. These books are just perfect echoes of Campbell's comparative conclusions, only more concise. After a lifetime of work, his lectures honed his thoughts into great clarity. These two books are actually great introductions to Campbell's thoughts and work. They touch here and there on historical evidence, but mainly stay in the line of clarifying what occident and orient mythology entails.
If you've been waiting a long time to read more Campbell, you'll have bought these books already. And if you haven't, you'll be very surpised.

A joyful exploration of a fascinating subject
Having not much more background in Asian religion than a Zen Buddhism class I took to fulfill a distribution requirement in college 20 years ago, I approached this book with some anticipation and some anxiety. My main memory of those long-ago days in that lecture class was of reading and discussing religious texts that seemed to have been written by another species--the basic assumptions were beyond me, and my professor (who had spent his adult life immersed in the study of esoteric Buddhism) had a hard time understanding why we didn't just get it. But I'd been fascinated by what little I'd understood and always wanted to find a more accessible guide to the ins and outs of Asian myth. This book is it! Campbell, who I knew from Power of Myth, lays out the basic principles that underlie Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism (and he touches on Taoism too) with the same sort of humor and wisdom that I'd expected. What a fun book to start the summer reading season with!

One of the best Christian books on the environment
I'm the director of a Christian environmental website, and I've read dozens of Christian books on ecology and the environment. This is one of my all-time favorites. I love this book! It may very well be the best book on the Biblical basis for environmental stewardship! Buy it for yourself, or buy it as a textbook for environmental study. Outstanding! What makes it particularly unique and special is that it is written by 4 biologists! My only complaint is that there is little or no mention of the great Christian conservationist, John Paul II. It's still very much worth a read.

This is perfect for a glance at the Christian Env. Ethic!
This book has changed my life by showing me how we, as Christians, must take a closer and more careful look at how we have a responsibility in ecology and envirmentalism today. Scripture references make it "an enviromental Bible study" and forces the reader to dig deeper into his or her beliefs. Take time to think about what you REALLY believe and change others by sharing this powerful book!

Foundational resource for advocacy of creation care
This book describes the biblical basis for the caretaking of creation--a relevant issue for all members of the global community. The book is written by four professors who explain the importance of understanding the value of all creation, including human beings. "Redeeming Creation" describes the unique role we humans have in ruling and subduing the remainder of creation as well as some of the consequences that have resulted from our misunderstanding of this role of ruling and subduing. Much published material has focued on ways that Christianity as a religion has exploted creation and exasperated the environmental and social pains of our planet. "Redeeming Creation" illuminates the claim that a correct understanding of the Bible is necessary not only for Christians to live by, but also for all members of the global community to conform to as we seek to address environmental and social injustices.

A great book - information overload
This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC. I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.

Which means - if you are looking for a solution to a problem and you want to research separation theory - a great book.

If your looking for a quick fix to an HPLC problem - not as good. This is a detailed, extensive and well written text on HPLC Method development - wish there was more on validation here though.

Plactical and Rational method Development!
Rational Method development for HPLC is resented. Instruction of rational development of 3-solvent separation system is excellent. This book also has useful know-hows and tools in practical laboratory experiments, such as strength of hydrogen bonding of base silica and nomograph for estimation of "solvent strength" for reversed phase HPLC.

an excellent book on pratical HPLC
The book is useful for gerenal operator who are both novice and expert. It do is pratice. It's better give another chapter for troubleshooting and maintence.

Great book on natural choices & self-health care seekers.
Wow - its like condensed orange juice! Clearly explains the how, what, why of healing. The chapter and chart on Price versus Value of supplements was the clearest and easiest explanation in a few short pages, that I've ever read. The doctors and pharmacists involved in writing it, deserve applause - first time I got the whole picture, along with clear and easy to understand information about everything from herbs to vitamins, flower remedies and everything in between. Dr. Pettles one page description on his natural menopausal hormone replecment therapy and natural choices versus the drug approach, made getting the book worth every cent! I copied the page for a friend, who ended up getting the book and showing it to her doctor. She said it was so simple and clear, her doctor stopped trying to push the drugs and gave her a prescription for Dr Pettles natural hormone replacement therapy - on top of that its working for her. Not since I read Mindells Vitamin Bible, have I read such a clear, information packed book! A must have for anyone interested in natural remedies and supplements - fanstastic value for the money. Incidently, I am NOT related to the authors.

Outstanding Resource!
This book cover all aspects of the ADD / ADHD child. Good recommendations on meds. for different types of ADHD and why.

concise yet thorough discussion of ADHD and its management
I read a borrowed copy and was ordering my own book within 24 hours. Both as a professional working with "at risk" children and as the mother of a child with a psychobiological disorder, I whole-heartedly recommend Dr. Horacek's book. In a spare 211 pages he gives perhaps the clearest most readable discussion of neuroanatomy and neurotransmitters I have encountered. He covers medical management and includes a fascinating glimpse of drug manufacture and marketing, the FDA, and the quandry faced by medical practitioners (hence insurance companies and consumers) in labeling a collection of behavioral symptoms. This book's cost might give some pause, but in my experience one would have to combine 2 or 3 other less readable texts to approximate the content of this single volume. It's an ideal purchase for those who want to know "why".
