This small dictionary and phrase book fits easily into your lab coat pocket and will prove to be infinately helpful for physicians and students traveling among Swahili speaking populations. There is a small but comprehensive medical section in the back that outlines body parts and useful questions like, "are you having diarrhea".

This is the best dictionary for swahili I've seen. It's readily available and has english to swahili, swahili to english. I've made the mistake in the past to buy dictionaries that only had swahili to english or vice versa. It's a good buy. It has many words. Unless you go to East Africa or some hidden away used bookstore, this is the best dictionary for a beginner to buy.

About 416 B.C. the island of Melos refused to aid Athens in the war against Sparta. The Athenians then slaughtered the men and enslaved the women and children, an atrocity never before inflicted on one Greek city-state by another. As preparations were made for the ruinous expedition against Syracuse, Euripides wrote "The Trojan Women," as a plea for peace. Consequently there is a strong rhetorical dimension to the play, which prophesies that a Greek force would sail across the sea after violating victims and meet with disaster. However, there the play also has a strong literary consideration in that the four Trojan Women--Hecuba, Queen of Troy; Cassandra, daughter of Hecuba and Priestess of Apollo; Andromache, widow of Hector; and Helen--all appear in the final chapter of Homer's epic poem the "Iliad," mourning over the corpse of Hector, retrieved by his father Priam from the camp of the Acheans. Whenever I have use "The Trojan Women" in class I have always used at least that last chapter of Homer to set up the play.

As with his last play "Iphigenia at Aulis," which tells of the events right before the Achean army left for Troy, "The Trojan Women" reflects the cynicism of Euripides. Of all the Achean leaders we hear about in Homer, only Menelaus, husband of Helen, appears. He appears, ready to slay Helen for having abandoned him to run off to Troy with Paris, but we see his anger melt before her beauty and soothing tones. In this play the Greeks do more than enslave women: they have already slain a young girl as a sacrifice to the ghost of Achilles and they take Astyanax, the son of Hector, out of the arms of his mother so that he can be thrown from the walls of Troy. Even the herald of the Greeks, Talthybius, cannot stomach the policies of his people. The play also reminds us that Helen was a most unpopular figure amongst the ancient Greeks, and there is no satisfaction in her saving her life (Note: you might want to check out Isocrates's "Encomium on Helen," an exhibition speech in which he shows off his talent by defending the hated woman). The idea that all of these men died just so that she could be returned to the side of her husband is an utter mockery of the dead. This translation by Nicholas Rudall focuses on the performance of "The Trojan Women," but it is certainly useful for those interested in the historical or literary aspects of the play as well. Another interesting analogy is to use this play in conjunction with "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes, so that students can compare and contrast an anti-war comedy and drama.

Having seen a staged production of this text at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, DC, I am looking forward to reading the text in detail. In the theater, this was a powerful, painful confrontation of the effects of war on the victims -- the women and children. No heroes, no vainglorious praise of war. Just the horrors of surviving and loss. Troy becomes every war-devastated landscape. The parallels to Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, etc., etc. were not to be denied.

Rudell is able to bridge the centuries and make Troy contemporary. The language is both elevated (in the style of classic tragedy) and immediate in its emotional impact.

if you can, please help me. if anyone knows if this is the santa clause story about an orphan boy in a small town who grows to become santa. The story I'm thinking of includes a sleigh race. It tells how the holly berry got it's name, why santa is fat, and the reason for stocking.

It was very enjoyable to read Paul Prokop's book (The True Story of Santa Claus) to my 3 year-old and wife the other night. It was not only entertaining, but very educational as well.

The pictures are great too. They reflect exactly what is going on in the story.

You can tell that Paul has a big heart and is a great father/husband to his children/wife. It shows in his writing.

Great job Paul! Keep writing books like "The True Story of Santa Claus" and we'll keep buying them and reading them to our children/family.

When he meets Santa himself, he is given an unexpected gift - Santa Claus' own story. Through the medium of this brief story, children can be introduced to the true meaning of Christmas. The words are simple and clear, but not simplistic. The illustrations are crisp and eye-catching. In short, this book puts the "saint" back in Santa and the "Christ" back in Christmas. It can be read by a young reader and is especially ideal to be read outloud by a grown-up with a child sitting close at hand. An excellent read.

Absolutely brilliant! The story begins when Wallace invents a "Ping Pong O'Matic Automated Home Leisure System", but when the machine goes haywire and destroys the washing machine, Wallace needs to pay a hefty repair bill. And so the man and his dog enter an Invention Convention sponsored by the Acme Corporation- with a first prize of £100. But soon, everything's not all as it seems...

The plot of this book is fabulous, the art is superb and the colours are nice and bright! Of the new characters introduced, the best are Mr. Patel, Wallace's next-door neighbour, an expert on pigeons and prevailing wind conditions, and the hillariously funny Mr. Do-it-all, the Hotel Splendio's doorman, receptionist,porter, bell boy, gardener, barman, room-service operative, and owner: "It's a job share," according to Mr. Do-it-all.

I would recommend this book to anyone- if you've never seen Wallace and Gromit before, you should still read this book- it is absolutely brilliant.

Yet another classic! Forget CHICKEN RUN, let's see the man and his dog on the HOLLYWOOD silver screen. Better yet, get Marillion to do the soundtrack - their latest album just out is called ANORAKNOPHOBIA! (coincidence? Fate? Act of God?) This book takes the intrepid duo into the realm of Hollywood possiblities with a plot that rivals James Bond and Austin Powers, characters like the enigmatic and intriguing Queenie who is at once frightening and wildly attractive, and the villianous von Struedel who could beat Dr. Evil at ping pong any day! Funny throughout, yet another winner from the folk who brought you W&G: the Lost Slipper and the Curse of the Ramsbottoms. Great bedtime fare!

Wallace and Gromit: Anoraknophobia is a great book for even a person that isn't interested in the claymation movies. It features the oscar winning character Wallace and his faithful dog pal Gromit. The book is very humorous at times but also puts it's share in with suspense. It takes place when Wallace creates a ping pong -o- matic home leisure system. Wallace tests out the new home leisure system he breaks his irreplaceable drum on account of they are on a budget. Wallace decides to enter in a invention convention to raise money for the new drum there and the wackiness begins! This is a great book that is very well drawn and thought out. If you liked movies such as "The Wrong Trousers" or "A Grand Day Out," you should definatly check this book out.

read this to my kids 30 years ago... the original blue & white one... and it is one story they still recall and can recite. Will purchase the new version for them at Christmas for their kids. Wonderful!

My mother read this book to me over 35 years ago and it was always my favorite. I still have the original book with pictures by Leonard Weisgard, Young Scott Books, New York MCMLXI copyright. The book has beautiful shades of blue on every page. I plan to purchase the new version for my preschool, however I'll always treasure my original!

The original book if I am correct has blue and white illustrations. I owned this book until my mother either lost it or sold it for 25 cents at a garage sale. She felt so bad that she bought me the new edition which is beautiful. I am still looking for the original copy of of this book for it is fabulous!

This novel is as well-written as the first and the storyline keeps the reader interested. Five stars for each book in the seven-part series.

"The Russians" series is by far the best historical fiction I have ever read. Judith Pella(and Micheal Phillips in the earlier books) weave a wonderful story of life during the Russian Revolution. These books don't portray an idealistic view of life during this time, but,rather, a very realistic view of what people went through in Russia during the revolution. I reccomend this series to anybody who loves Russian history, romance, intrigue, or just a good cry because this series has it all!

The Russian series has been one of the best I've read. These are the kind of books that make learning history exciting! As you read this series, you become so involved in the charcters lives and feelings, it as if you have known them personally. But the authors have done extensive research to make the true history so accurate as the characters walk through life and we view it from their eyes.The struggles and hardships, as well as the joy and happiness, we feel it all. I love the way belief and faith in God,or the search to find it, is protrayed in the lives of each individual.This book is nearing the revolution and you see how family and friends may have had differing opinions and how they dealt with it. The whole series is excellent and keeps you riveted to the end!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this anthology, but I found myself enthralled from beginning to end. Nnedi Okorafor's "Crossroads", Seth Lindberg's "Atropos", and James Dorr's "Madness" were special delights.

A great mix of chilling, horrifying, and otherwise entertaining stories.

This is a great compilation of magic, madness, culture and creativity. All of the stories were pretty satisfying, some of them terrifying! There are some writers here that are going to go places. Watch for the authors of the two longest pieces, Nnedi Okorafor (her story is called Crossroads) and James S. Dorr (he wrote a story called Madness).

These books are a riot. And, once you get in the swing of things, they are very readable. I've been studying French in adult school off and on for three years and I do great with these books. I've actually read Petit Nicholas and Les Copains. And, yes, there are a ton of these volumes. In France, you can get them in any bookstore, so I'm asking for them as a holiday gift from my French cousins. And, next time I go to France, I'm taking an extra suitcase to bring home as many as I can find.

If you haven't encountered him, Petit Nicholas is a young boy who from France who tells the most wonderful stories about his "copains", his parents, and his school. Told from a waist-high viewpoint and with complete irreverence, Nicholas is especially enchanting because his grammar is not too complex for a 2d or 3d year student to follow - you can "get it" without spending countless hours looking things up. Favorites? Father caught red-handed in a park pool by Les Gendarmes, who don't believe he was trying to *return* the goldfish! (By the way, this is a series of books, not a single volume).

This is an excellent example of military artwork at its best. Gives the reader an excellent background on the thought process behind each of Trudgian's masterpieces. I own 11 separate prints of his and this book is a welcome addition to my Trudgian collection. Highly recommend this book to any WW2 historian or fan.
